Glad we cleared all that up.

RE: Team's Statement
Perception is reality.

ESPN ran story of HC stating that “silence” of other coaches, particularly of Power 5 who have created “generational wealth” for their families by way of African American athletes they recruit adds to the “problem”.

Some programs ahead of the curve. Others “caught” flat footed.

I understand the angst. The issue is painted as universal, pervasive and institutional.

Again some truth in that.

But as Cornel West pointed out many African Americans who have “made it” are guilty of living in gaited communities, financially invest in ways (be it businesses, countries, product) that when you peal back the onion can legitimately be viewed as a source of continuing the “divide”. Throwing $ at it, appearing on social media and supporting pols while characteristically living just the opposite is disingenuous.

Statement was needed but unnecessary. Needed for public consumption (check the box) but the program and those that make it up are not guilty to begin with. To assume otherwise is nonsense.

Maybe as Van Jones advocates that we need to be more concerned with “Karen” than avowed KKK members.

Is this the “I’m not a Karen” statement?

Interesting last post Cucumber Salad. Up until this I was not going to reply.

Many coaches and institutions have come out with similar statements. I ask myself why is a statement necessary. Is it to shout to the world "I'm Not Racist"? Who even pays attention to your statement other than those that are important to you or those who think you are important to them.

Those important people in your life should already know that you are not racist by your everyday action and behavior. If they don't know then perhaps you are racist.

I would think it's important to the players (and their families).

Maybe to some others as well, not sure.

Actions matter more than words as the statement from the team says.

I think it was necessary but sadly so. I pray the players understand that their coaches love them. And that the families get that funneled directly from the players.

In some ways to state without being asked “I’m not a racist” feels like I’m answering a question like “ have I stopped beating my wife?”

Compassion and empathy are needed now and for eternity. I'm proud that our coaches stepped up during these disturbing times.

Proud they stepped up to.... issue a statement? Yes, perhaps I am being overly critical here. Statements don't do crap to solve the underlying problem.

Want to make a real difference: treat everyone you come in contact, with love, compassion and respect.

The change happens with all of us one interaction at a time.

There is no authentic motive for these kinds of statements. They are made because everyone else is making them. It is pervasive, cynical grandstanding, and it isn’t necessary. Unfortunately the current generation prefers symbolism to authenticity.

RE: Team's Statement
I find these statements to be pretty toothless if they don't mention the police, white supremacy, or institutional racism. Without that, they're just "Be nice to each other." But it's probably pretty hard to make a statement that takes in lots of different people in the program's voices, especially given the pandemic.

Ben and Jerry nailed it. I better go slam another pint of half baked. https://www.benjerry.com/about-us/media-...-supremacy

I agree, Dr. Davis. But I'm also glad that the Bball team took the initiative to a least address the concerns rather than silence.
