Up to 18% of W&M Athletics Revenues At Risk
Will students be on campus this fall...will they not. Will football play...will it not. Those are massive questions with outsized budget concerns for athletics programs across the country.

Below, we outline potential scenarios, and what that potentially means for W&M, and schools in similar situations.

Check it out. Roll Tribe Roll.

RE: Up to 18% of W&M Athletics Revenues At Risk
My question is more about how much it costs and what are the net profits or contributions back into the athletic budget.

What constitutes revenue?

Ticket sales and concessions, media sales, and payments from away games. There could be some conference sharing in terms of playoffs, but I'm not sure about that. I think that's about the list.

...merchandise (probably doesn't amount to much), tailgate spot rentals and acute donations by fans who catch Tribe fever.

If we miss the Stanford game, that's 400-500k down the drain. BTW, there is no official word on that. Actually, if you think about it, Stanford should really want that game as it will give them a great trial run prior to their FBS schedule. They host USC just 2 weeks later.

Not sure how they count donations, but I have to believe that a massive portion of athletics-related donations is specifically earmarked for football (as requested by specific donors themselves).

If you do the math, and say that W&M Athletics' budget is roughly $30M per year, you can start to break it down as such:
$15M - Intercollegiate Athletic Fees (paid by students)
$5M - Football Revenues

-- this would mean that the rest of the ~$10M is made up through other sports, perhaps donations, and whatever else we can think of.

The dollars from Stanford for that game in California (which would be the first ever Pacific Coast football game for a W&M team) may not necessarily
go away if Stanford cancels the ballgame.

Contracts can be written two ways: (1) no payment if the home team cancels the game; or (2) payment has to be made to visiting team if the home team cancels for any reason. None of us know how this game contract is written so we'll have to see.

What probably will disappear even if the game is played is the large West Coast W&M festivities gathering built around the Stanford week. Headquartered at the iconic Fairmont Hotel ion S.F., more than 300 Tribe alums and fans from up and down the Coast have already signed up for a solid week of activities climaxed by the game at Stanford. It is built around the "For the Bold" promotion and some major donations are involved.
This will depend on what develoips in California re the Covid-19 pandemic. It would be the largest W&M Pacific Coast program ever.

Linked article is an ode to bus leagues. Have seen reporting that staffs have been furloughed and salaries have been cut. Have seen reporting that conference commissioners and ADs want more regional schedules for non-revenue sports. Have seen reporting that conferences and colleges have petitioned NCAA to reduce scholarships and cut sports, and allowed to do so. Have seen no reporting that NCAA has been asked by have not programs, publicly, about allowing conference reorganizations that don't involve loss of b'ball tournament slots. If not now, when?

Both ECU and App State cutting sports this week. I fear that this trend will continue. Both larger schools with bigger budgets than WM
