Exclamation Which fans can attend a CFB game this fall? Can social distancing work?
https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2020/...mSports_sf

“Because we play at Legion Field and it’s such a large stadium, we can do it and still have every single fan that wants to come and watch us; we can do it with ease,” UAB athletic director Mark Ingram said. “We may end up taking the tarps off the endzones if we had to.”

Hats off to Legion Field!

Quote:"It’s not only well-heeled boosters that attend games, though. You also have to factor in students, faculty, recruits, the marching band, among other groups. Swarbrick told Sports Illustrated he would start with the 11,000 student season ticket holders before getting his alumni ticket holders into the stadium. That might seem counterintuitive, but many schools receive millions of dollars in student fees that cover things like football tickets. If schools were to shut out the students entirely, it could not only hurt future enrollment but they’d risk forfeiting those student fees and plunging their athletic departments into even worse financial struggles. According to an NBC News report, Conference USA member UNC Charlotte collects a whopping $21.6 million in student fees. That same report showed multiple FBS schools, including Old Dominion and Florida International, deriving more than 50 percent of their athletic department revenue from student fees."

Now that I don't have any more kids attending UAB, I think we should jack up the student fees to more than Charlotte is collecting. 03-nutkick

Of course, something tells me it would end up getting directed toward some new building in Tuscaloosa.

According to the B'ham Park Board letter I copied and gave out at a radio show on Valley Avenue, there is a total of 26,000 seats between the goal lines at Legion Field since the upper deck was removed. Some disagreed with that number, but that is what the Park Board letter said. The implication is that the rest of the supposed 70,000 seats are end zone seats or further back into the curves into the North and South end zones. If "social distancing" is to be practiced, the crowd will have to be guided by someone in authority to sit in certain spaces.

I don't think it will come down to who can and can't attend a game. It will either be all can attend or no one outside of immediately family and necessary personnel will be allowed at the games.

There will be no fair to say who will be allowed and won't be allowed. Those who can't go will hold protests and say their liberties are being trampled on and their freedom to attend a football game is being unfairly taken away. The President will demand fans be allowed to attend these games therefore putting pressure on the govenors, mayors, school presidents and ADs to allow all to attend. This is such a non issue IMO.

The bigger question will be if there will be a season or not?

I read a while back someone with the NCAA saying that if there weren't students on campus there wouldn't be football. I know UAB and rest of the system is planning on returning students in the fall but other parts of the US are not. What if some schools have students on campus but others don't? I think most Southern schools will but hard to say about the rest of US. Will the South field a college season on its own?

Most assuredly, the South will play football if at all possible, regardless of what other regions of the country decide. The NCAA basically washed its hands of it all, leaving the decision to play or not and when to start solely up to the individual schools and their states.

I've read predictions about football increasingly becoming a regional sport. On the high school and particularly the youth level, football is losing ground everywhere in the US outside the South. That regional perception could be accelerated if only the South is playing this Fall.
We live in strange and interesting times.

I'll have plenty of space on the "visitor" side of Legion Field.02-13-banana

College Football has always been a regional sport. Granted you have games on the major networks that reaches all parts of the country but when you look at the rating of even the top broadcast games from CBS for example you would see the majority of the viewership is from the area of the two teams that are playing.

This is why CFP Championship Game will never reach the viewership level of the Super Bowl or even the NFC or AFC Championship Game.

My copy has been lost, but over a dozen copies were passed out during a Blazer All Access radio show at the Full Moon BBQ location on Valley Avenue.
