Should probably turn off location services and Bluetooth, too.

KEY POINTS
-Apple and Google’s digital contact tracing technology is included in new updates to iOS and Android that will be released on Wednesday.
-Alabama, North Dakota and South Carolina are the first states to publicly comment about using Apple and Google’s contact tracing technology in statewide apps meant to slow the spread of coronavirus.
-Apple and Google’s contact tracing system is designed to slow the spread of coronavirus by tracking who a person has been in close contact with using a Bluetooth system that stores data on people’s phones, not a central database.

Maybe I read it wrong, but this seems to be updates so that the operating system works with contact tracing apps. So if you don't install any tracing apps, what's the harm?

I agree.

If you don't download any contact tracing apps you are ok.

You do know they have been able to track your every movement for a long time. The police need a warrant to do so. However you think bad guys or whomever worry with warrants?

There's two fold to this in my opinion.

1. The media reported at the beginning of the outbreak that the CDC and other agencies were able to track people practicing social distancing by cellphone use. Well the media did what it does and told the public so people got wise and stopped using their phones when they weren't social distancing correctly. My thought is this app will help with that and help let agencies know who is where and maybe help stop further outbreaks.

2. Here's where I need my tin foil hat, after this is over, these companies will have all this data and I'm sure they're willing to sell it to whomever is willing to pay for it.

That was my point, and also why I turn off my phone whenever I leave the house now.
