Putting aside the students, there are too many university employees and too many towns (both large and small) that depend upon universities continuing to function.

I don’t disagree, but I believe the perception of unpopularity and political suicide is a bit overstated, too. But, how would we know? Who’s shutting down a four-year public college or university these days?
Georgia has merged a number of schools. I think they have eliminated at least 7 in the last few years. Some were two year but others were 4 year.

This is a list of 7. I know there has been at least one since then (Georgia Southern and Armstrong St.).

Some of those look very logical, and others look like they could become headaches all over again. Like North Georgia and Gainesville. The challenges are more significant than how they’re described: you have students who belong at the four-year, but now students who don’t or ever wanted to be, as well as physical assets and upkeep. Those looking for a two-year or different academic to career path have to look elsewhere, but, you can’t have that much saturation on the two-year front, either.

Georgia’s lucky, though, in that you have these state teaching schools and other tech/business/trade-based ones you could merge to combine strengths. PA doesn’t have that with their system. The PASSHE schools are pretty much coded the same, with the exception of two of the more aggressive schools (IUP and West Chester) who have expanded some scope over the years. And most of them are not close to each other to gain that proximity boost. Plus, because dear old Penn State converted their satellite campuses into four-year sites, it stresses the need for the community colleges when there could have been some kind of balance between PSU, PASSHE schools, and the CC’s. Now they all try to attract the same kids, ready for whatever level or not. When PSU should have considered its own constriction, heh, not a chance. They do their thing and their support in Harrisburg runs very deep, at the expense of the actual state-run system no less.

Closings, mergers and reduced course/degree offerings were going to escalate sharply over the next decade or so. This pandemic has only accelerated the timetable for this trend. Ironically, it also gives schools and states political cover to do what they knew they needed to anyway.

I'm not so sure about that. I think the main impact might be technological. The ZOOM eruption, along with faculty being forced to teach online this spring and summer (at least) might be a game-changer in terms of a lot of schools that had resisted putting programs online now doing so.

It's kind of like my shopping habits - for years, I've browsed through stores like Walmart and Target, but the past two months I've been using the "pickup" service. I now see that as a permanent thing for me even when CV19 ends and I never would have tried it had I not been forced to.

Sure, there are going to be closures and shutdowns but I expect more of this at the private level than public level. I think the same political pressures that have stopped public restructuring in the past at the *system* level will likely still be in effect.

We shall see.
The college aged population is predicted to drop off significantly in 2025-26. Birth rates declined sharply during the Great Recession and that decline will start to hit college campuses in the next 5 or 6 years.

I’m not convinced we’ll see a huge number of closures from COVID-19. As long as there isn’t another significant wave in this outbreak in the fall/winter than enrollment in most places should rebound next spring and fall. The financial pain caused by this may put many colleges just close enough to the brink of closure that the expected mid 20’s enrollment decline puts them out of business. For others, this crisis may just give them the not so subtle nudge, and political cover, to get really lean and efficient which may help them weather the coming enrollment crisis much better than others.

I hate to hear this. I've always found Big Pat to be a pleasant, understated and likeable person. Let's hope he battles through the virus with full success and that the Georgetown family provides him strong support.
