In another thread we debated whether beating a big power 5 team or dominating CUSA phase would help advance UABs national football reputation more. The dominate CUSA seemed to win internal debate.

As antidotal evidence I would offer the most successful program at advancing reputation -FSU did play anybody anywhere. Schools get noticed each year when they beat a big time school. Heck at UAB we even still talk about beating nick's LSU team over decade ago as our high point. Playing and then maybe even beating is best

On the other hand, IMHO nationally almost no-one could give a care about who dominates CUSA. (although it does get a better bowl). As an test for this theory proponents such as C-finder, blaze and man4 can you name without looking the winners of conferences near us?

Sunbelt is obviously App State ( First 13-win team in North Carolina, defeated two P5 schools and us03-banghead)

MAC and MWC champions? IDK 05-duck

David only had to defeat one Goliath. What if there had been 10 more such opponents? App State was able to defeat one Michigan team, but is not seriously considered ready for a P5 conference. UAB defeated one LSU team but then lost to its contemporaries that year. What will establish UAB is the CONSISTENCY with which it plays and wins games over several seasons. The difference is that UAB now has FACILITES it never had for almost 30 years to back up its program with what its opposition had back then. I really believe it is not a coincidence that our better teams came with a better coach AND BETTER FACILITES to back his coaching capabilities. I'm sure FBHC Clark has a list of facility upgrades he would like to see built ASAP.

I think we all remember what happened the last time he revealed that list.

I'm sure he has a wish list, but once we are in Protective Stadium football is really in good shape wrt facilities.

I don’t think the point was that winning the conference championship is more important than beating a big name team.
I think the point was that DOMINATING the conference year in and year out would be more important than beating a big name team.

Nobody has done that in the conferences around us. Thus, not being able to name them doesn’t invalidate the point
For the record, I’m not saying that I agree or disagree with either view. Personally, I’d like to try dominating the conference AND beating some P5 teams...then debate which one turned out to be more important

- Didn't say "win." Said "dominate." No one has dominated CUSA, Sunbelt, or MAC to the extent and for the period of time we're talking about. MWC games were almost practice games for a good decade as Boise built its rep. It was stunning when they lost in conference

- The FSU model/days were in such a different landscape in college football it might as well be a fiction book at this point. In any case, if an independent (FSU was) could load their schedule up on "big time" schools and beat them regularly in today's world of college football with leftover recruits from P5 powers then someone get Clark on the phone and demand we withdraw from CUSA immediately

- Are you saying no one debates Boise St. making the NY6 every season? No one debated them making the BCS when that existed? Doesn't Boise St. have, and has had for the entire period of their rise to prominence, 8-9 conference games on their schedule every season? Same w/ UCF. They debate Boise St. and UCF in separate discussions than "could another MWC or AAC school sneak in?"

- Which one of those models is more relevant today?

- Antidotal?

I think it is more than a "wish list" since he knows the other schools are not likely to be standing still now that UAB has begun to play "catch up" in facilities after almost 30 years. While the new BJCC Stadium will be nice to have access to for UAB football fans, it will only match many other stadiums around our conference and beyond it in "player centric (locker room) amenities".

I agree that at this point in time no one cares about who dominates CUSA nationally.. we need to change that.

I believe that the first step to improving our reputation is to dominate our conference. You have to start somewhere and it is not like our conference members are powerhouses. Consistently win CUSA, build our fan/donor base and then focus on the next step of winning games against P5 teams. It won’t happen overnight.

it is LIGHT YEARS ahead of legion field. Today's high school football players did not grow up watching Alabama and Auburn play home games at legion field. They did not grow up dreaming of playing in legion field. UAB is about to have the best stadium in CUSA or the Sunbelt. that is going to help in recruiting. most of the schools we recruit against are playing in facilities far below what protective will be.

How exactly do you know this? The other day you asked if there would be wheelchair access. This isn’t 1930, they are building a modern stadium. I will be the first to admit I’m wrong if it doesn’t blow MTSU’s stadium out of the water.

You are correct that the Protective (BJCC) Stadium is expected to be substantially better than Legion Field, but that almost 100 year old stadium is not one used by any of our competitor schools. UAB has to recruit against schools who are not still using century old stadiums, and how well that finished product will stack up against our competition at the FBS level is by what future recruits will be judging the Blazer's offer. UAB cannot afford to rest comfortably on what we have finally built for very long.
