RE: CMU Drops Under D1 FBS Mandated Sport Sponsorship Levels
Its not that moving down to FCS is bad as much as the current financial setup doesn't provide a rationalization for it.
A super division with a minimum requirement of 40,000 seats would give university presidents a free excuse to move down from FBS as it being a requirement too far.
Most presidents in the MAC I think would happily bow out if that were the case.
But with the money better as it is in FBS over FCS the rationalization isn't there.

The rationalization would be saving about $10 million in additional required subsidies that G5 have over FCS.
But, that doesn't mean much to admins and boosters who like FBS football because they aren't paying the subsidy, students and the "academic side" are. It's a cost-free ego-stroke for them.
If you made admins take pay cuts each year in proportion to the size of the subsidies needed to run FBS football, you'd see a big change in their attitude towards the "affordability" of it real quick. Like Roadrunner quick. Suddenly all talk about "front porch" and "intangible marketing value" and the like would get the heeve-ho out the window.
I mean, believe it or not, when EMU was cutting sports last year but not Sacred Cow football, the university president said one reason was that reputationally they want to compare themselves with Western Michigan and Central Michigan ...... not Grand Valley State. But GVS not only has a far lower athletic subsidy, its US News ranking is actually higher than WMU or CMU .... or Eastern Michigan!
It's that kind of craziness that FBS football drives.

It's less about them not wanting to not be a Grand Valley St, and more about them not wanting to be a Saginaw Valley St or Hillsdale.

This bears repeating. Central Michigan has won seven MAC football titles since joining the conference in 1975. Past players and coaches include Antonio Brown and Brian Kelly. Central Michigan is not going to walk away from this tradition easily.

Bad decision. Allows G5 with White Elephant football programs to preserve them by cutting other sports that aren't nearly as costly.

Big difference is that CMU is at the minimum overall sports requirement for FBS, whereas Wright State is now three below the requirement for Division 1 itself.

RE: CMU Drops Under D1 FBS Mandated Sport Sponsorship Levels
What sport will CMU add? My guess is golf; low cost conference sponsored sport and CMU already has a women's team.
What will happen in 2022 if a sport is not added?
I agree that it might be hard to deny Wright State but there is a difference in needing to add 1 sport for one gender and needing to add 3 sports for two genders. There aren't many sports that are lower costs than what WSU dropped so it would seem that the current actions would accomplish nothing in the long run by (re-)adding sports in two years. At least CMU will see some savings by replacing T&F with Golf.

RE: CMU Drops Under D1 FBS Mandated Sport Sponsorship Levels
I wouldn't be at all surprised if there isn't a major change in NCAA sponsorship requirements in the aftermath of the current pandemic. Such a move could make all this moot.
I've suggested on more than one occasion that the NCAA should disassociate itself from football entirely. Indeed, I would even suggest that they include men's basketball in this disassociation, and change their name to National Collegiate Amateur Athletic Association (NCAAA).
If football weren't a scholarship activity, but rather an unrelated business activity in which players were paid enough to cover their cost of attendance, including tuition, etc., then Title IX might not be such a problem for most schools.

So what they need is a brilliant head coach supported by a very good head coach serving in the OC or DC roles, so when Cincinnati steals the first, they are set for a good long time and the second stays at CMU.
{To be sure, this is snark on UC being the only destination ... in reality, some Big Ten school steals the "very good coach" as Asst. Coordinator, Coordinator or Head Coach (high position for lower finishing school).}
Cincinnati did steal 2 in a row from CMU.

I agree. FBS football is a bad idea for a lot of these schools. Give them the opportunity to move down instead of the opportunity to keep spending student money.
