Before Covid-19, last fall football attendance at NIU and the MAC was atrocious!
Among 130 FBS programs, NIU was second to last, just ahead of Ball State.
MAC programs constituted five of the worst nine and 11 of the bottom 30 programs.
130 -- Ball State
129 -- Northern Illinois
126 -- Kent State
123 -- Eastern Michigan
122 -- Central Michigan
115 -- Bowling Green State
112 -- Miami
110 -- Buffalo
102 -- Ohio
101 -- Akron
100 -- Western Michigan

Toledo was 90th.

There are 130 FBS football teams. 65 of those are Power Five schools. If you rank just the Group of Five schools that leaves 65 schools. That means that Toledo was ranked the highest in the MAC of all Group of Five schools. Out of all those schools UT ranked 25th in attendance.

That is probably right but I also think a big part of that too is because the Orange Bowl was a process where you were rewarded for on the field performance. The rest of bowl season has no correlation to quality of season. Often times, the most fringe MAC teams to cross the win threshold get the most attractive bowl game. It is hard for fans to get excited for a bowl system that is not merit based. The Orange Bowl process to get there was based on a tangible set of events that had to happen where performance on the field could translate into reward. We just do not get that in bowl season

Hard to imagine, but I actually agree, MD. Bowls are participation awards below a certain level. Hard to get excited by 6-6 teams beating 6-6 teams. When over half the FBS goes bowling, "the honor and glory" is watered down to just being in the upper 60%. Not much there.

I like having a lot of bowl games. Would be fine though with 5 or 6 less and 7-5 being the bare minimum to qualify unless the system is one team short.

I felt a letdown after reaching the lofty levels of the Orange Bowl and I think many others did too. Hard to get excited for Akron or EMU after taking on FSU. To this day I find winning the MAC is a nice accomplishment but doesn’t generate the excitement of beating a P5 team. Winning the MAC is similar to being the tallest midget.

There probably will be less bowls moving forward. As corps recover from COVID, cutting bowl sponsorships will be easy savings.

New DC, OC, LB , QB Coaches for 2020 show just how serious the bad season was viewed by the powers that be.

Let's jizzle the numbers to make ourselves look good. So if you just count the last two, Northern was #1. But the original post by uiniu57 was about FBS, not P5 vs. G5. And by that measure, the whole MAC doesn't look all that great.

The G5 are our peers so I think its very relevant. That would mean that NIU ranked 64 out of 65 of its peers. I agree with the heading of the thread...Depressing! Especially after all the success that NIU has had.

Because of maction our only peers is the mac. And even then it’s questionable in regards to accurate counting and number of weeknight games. The only fair measure would be the first Saturday games before maction starts.

They probably play more weeknight games in bad weather conditions than any other Conference, exacerbating the attendance issues.

I'm just bad at sarcasm. I wasn't complaining. Just pointing out that you can make numbers say what you want. Point is, the MAC as a whole is in terrible shape, and Toledo is just the least terrible in terms of attendance. I was agreeing with uiniu57. Shoulda said this instead of that. I'll have to work on that. And imo everyone misfires once in a while.

That said, attendance decline is not new, as uiniu57 pointed out. All MAC attendance was/is declining for a variety of reasons, imo, that we all know or strongly suspect. Some are worse than others, due to more "local" factors including state. With the crisis, it just depresses even more.

I choose to look at the "other side" of the crisis and hope the powers-that-be will find time to try to plot and plan for what happens afterward. I don't know about everybody in the MAC, but Akron officials were planning on streamlining before the Coronavirus impacts hit. NIU was planning to consolidate health-related programs in combination with emerging technology. There may be things going on at others a well.

Imagine having 6 home games, 5 on Saturdays, all game days above 50 degrees. Sounds like fantasy to us, reality to other schools.

Attendance playing field none to level for MAC schools.

Get our Saturdays back ASAP please to start.

That would be great news, but ... since this thread is depressing, the ESPN-MAC contract does not expire until 2027, and ESPN wanted it to fill gaps in live events on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. No impetus to renegotiate. Schools have failed to learn to adapt, so there has not been/is no emphasis on the 4 home Saturday games we do have. Instead, NIU moves the only "big" of the year -- BYU, if it's played -- to Bridgeview in a half-a attempt to chase 160,000 alumni who previously have shown little to no interest en masse. And that's a Saturday game; correct if wrong.

Attendance playing field none to level for MAC schools.

Get our Saturdays back ASAP please to start.

Athletics has done NOTHING marketing-wise to attract more attendance and fan support. They have assumed the attitude, "Here we are; come and get us." There are very few products for which this works. They need to advertise the fun of going to a game, create some excitement, and let people know we are here - a short ride from home. They have failed miserably at this. It will not change unless and until we get a new AD with some marketing savvy, who is willing to allocate a few bucks well spent.

The first 1,000 fans got Hammock jerseys. That was cool?

The giveaways are great! And they should have more if they can continue to get the sponsors to pay for them. But, they need to market the hell out of this. If they don't have the money for a bit of solid advertising, maybe they should get out of the business. People are not going to come just because you are there. You need to draw them in by creating some excitement. We are not a big P5 school that fans flock to. So you need to do something to get them to come.

So season ticket holders will get shirts for the first two home games?
