Before Covid-19, last fall football attendance at NIU and the MAC was atrocious!
Among 130 FBS programs, NIU was second to last, just ahead of Ball State.
MAC programs constituted five of the worst nine and 11 of the bottom 30 programs.
130 -- Ball State
129 -- Northern Illinois
126 -- Kent State
123 -- Eastern Michigan
122 -- Central Michigan
115 -- Bowling Green State
112 -- Miami
110 -- Buffalo
102 -- Ohio
101 -- Akron
100 -- Western Michigan

Toledo was 90th.

We did this to ourselves plain and simple, no one to blame but MAC front office and ADs, anyone could see this coming from a mile away

Correct. They should have moved the schools to Florida and Texas. Lack of foresight was paramount in them getting stuck in the mud on this one.

We wanted the ESPN payday so those at higher levels can maintain some inflated salaries, but we all knew there was a price for that and it is a decaying fanbase. We deserve this and brought it on solely ourselves

I mean, at the time, I was happy and excited about the ESPN deal (especially since, at the time, there was no FS1/2, CBSSN, NBCSN, or whatever other sports dedicated channel we have now). It was the first time I'd get to watch most of NIU football and basketball games. So, I'd be disingenuous to say back then I "knew what the price was" and I doubt anyone else actually knew how a decline in interest combined with an increase in weeknight games was imminent.

But, I'm sure you knew and was immediately blowing the whistle on the entire deal.

The first few mid-week games prior to the MACtion contract were exciting and brought out large crowds (we still had them), however this quickly became old and attendance dropped.

Personally doing this once was fun, now it it a total burden and unrealistic to sustain. I cannot make those games and the amount of time and weather does not justify me even trying. And the HUGE DROP in attendance indicates most others agree. These games hurt NIU and the DeKalb community. It's time to dump the MACtion games!

The Orange Bowl seems like a long time ago at this point. Our failure to capitalize on that success absolutely killed us. Whatever the reason for that, coaching and administrative defections, or marketing changes a lot of the problems we have now and in the future will be traced back to that.

It appears I am in the minority, but I personally like the mid-week games. Perhaps our attendance would be dropping over the years even if the mid-week games never came into play? That fact I seem to be the exception says the mid-week games over the years has hurt us with people in the seats. I love NIU football being on the TV of every bar in the country, which was the original motivation for the conference. The empty stadium look, though, has not helped our reputation. Just me personally, the mid week games are a blast & are must go for me. It is cold ect... but that just adds to the fun if you let it. Plus, for scheduling, we get 6 months advance notice to get everything in place to go. I do not understand the issue with this, but we all have our different situations where I guess are not as flexible. The way I see it, there are 5 to 6 home games a year, I do not care when they are played, I will find a way to make it. Can't stand missing any of the action at home.

As a parent of three kids at NIU, for me the most frustrating piece is the lack of interest from the students. Fraternity meetings while a home game is going on for instance. Are you f'ink kidding me. It drives me crazy. The coaches and players need to get out to Greek row, in mass classes (Cole) and speak to the kids and try to get a connection and fire them up. As a Huskie nut and former athlete from the mid 1980's it is just so different. I do not get it & never will. I know there are allot of other options now, but nothing better than routing for your school.

Orange Bowl failure is really the lack of a fan base. We can't get 10k people to a game consistently much less the. needed 25-35 to finance a move higher in stature. UCF and Boise At generate tremendous support and have the $$$ supporting them. Everything NIU has achieved is the hard way and has FAR surpassed what normal people do given the same constraints.

Yes, you are indeed in the heavy minority. Most people who are normal would never sit outside in the winter in temperatures of 25 degrees (or less), which in DeKalb feels like 15 degrees. Also, some people need to work jobs to support their families where it's not easy to take time off and travel to DeKalb from the city (or further). If they do take the time off, they may have to dig into their family vacation time. It is much easier to sit at home and watch the game in comfort, while the few at the game freeze their arses off.

So, if the MAC's goal has been to reduce the fanbase and attendance at the games and increase the TV viewership, they have been wildly successful.

If we would have just won the MAC Championship the next year---undefeated season---back to back BCS----not a single reason Herbstreit or anyone else could have argued against it.

That loss---and how bad it was to Bowling Green in the championship game altered the trajectory of the program much more than I would have ever imagined. I swear, six and a half years later, that BG tight end is still wide open.

I still remember some of the players' dads melting down at the coaches in the seats at Ford Field. That was an emotionally volatile night.

I don't disagree with you. But my comment was directed at the notion that it was easily foreseen and we deserve our fate because we chose it. That's just complete hindsight bias nonsense.

That's interesting about the Greek meetings and something that shocks me, tbh.

As for the weeknight games. I like them too because they're more convenient for me watching on tv, but I get the issue with alumni (and apparently students...) making it to DeKalb on those evenings. Saturdays, while I love them, are also family time for me and my wife and if I ate up every single fall saturday with NIU football....I'd be divorced within a year.

RE: Depressing!
Yes, depressing, but there is a silver lining and it IS doable ...

What MAC schools failed to do -- but which can STILL be done -- is to focus local and regional marketing on the 4 of the 6 home games that remain on Saturdays. The earlier focus on weekday night MACtion and TV TV TV diverted attention, and it's time to restore that.

These come early in the season, so the probability of better weather is higher. The start/restart of the fall semster has higher energy than after people "settle in." The opportunity for on-campus promotion, especially to incoming freshmen is greater the whole "this is your NIU" thing). They cannot be just home games. They have to become EVENTS.

Lately, the MAC and Northern have sometimes been able to make two of those 4 games (Homecoming plus one earlier) against MAC opponents. Those should be "rivalry" games. Potential MAC opponents can include the alleged rivalry with Toledo, but why not Bowling Green, which is in the same geographic area? Ball State? The three Michigan schools? Don't play Ohio, Buffalo, etc., which have little chance of drawing visiting fans. Save those for later, when they'd be TV games for most of us anyway. Set up a special area for visiting fans and work with the opponent school to promote it on their end. Make these good game-day experiences for everyone, especially NIU students. These games have to become "the place to be."

STF has also been trying to get in-state FCS in here with some success. It's kind of take-what-you-can-get, and looking ahead, NIU has a solid effort going here (2022 EIU, 2023 SIU, 2026, IllSt). Try to tap more in the region, like Northern Iowa, Missouri State, even Indiana State if possible. If St. Thomas in Minneapolis gets into the Summit (now seeking NCAA approval for the rare move-up from DIII to DI), grab them too (but but beware ... they won the DIII national title in 2011 and 2016 and got kicked out of the MIAC, allegedly for winning too many conference titles; 6 since 2010. Could have another North Dakota State here).

That leaves plenty of room for those big "payday" road games.

Imo, the good thing about this is that other MAC schools could do the same.

And move those two damn weekday night home games to SeatGeek in Bridgeview or somewhere NIU can build a real Chicago connection, instead of pretending to have one with a "Chicago game" once every 3-4 years..

Move weekday night games to Lane Stadium.

Boom problem solved. Stadium will sell out and establishes a Chicago connection.

I think the Athletics Administration went on vacation after the Orange Bowl, because there was zero marketing after the game, and the OB sizzle fizzled.

That is probably right but I also think a big part of that too is because the Orange Bowl was a process where you were rewarded for on the field performance. The rest of bowl season has no correlation to quality of season. Often times, the most fringe MAC teams to cross the win threshold get the most attractive bowl game. It is hard for fans to get excited for a bowl system that is not merit based. The Orange Bowl process to get there was based on a tangible set of events that had to happen where performance on the field could translate into reward. We just do not get that in bowl season
