Clemson cutting men's cross country plus men's indoor and outdoor track & field. Down to FBS minimum 16 sports.

I hate to see any program cut, but cross country? I am a college cross country coach, it does not cost much to run a program. :(

If you don’t have t&f you aren’t a comprehensive athletic program

you would think Clemson could have some great men's track squads putting some of Dabo's burners out there in the spring for sprinting and jumping events. Bunch of SEC schools plus FSU do this and win/contend for NCAA track titles regularly.

Clemson has had at least one All-American in Indoor or Outdoor trace each year since 1985.

In that time - 182 outdoor track all-americans, 115 indoor all-americans.

I'm curious about the sources of revenue for college T&F. Does this include X-country revenues?

No idea. You can see where I got it from. Not sure if they combined all three together.

I also read that the savings are just being distributed to their other sports programs. That's strange to me if they are running a ~$25 million athletic deficit. It appears the deficit will not decrease at all. That's what is most puzzling to me.

Agreed. Dual sport guys from football to track are a common and successful combo.

Good article about dual sport athletes in the NFL.

Including one from Clemson:

"James Trapp, Clemson
James Trapp went to Clemson on a football scholarship, but he quickly became known in the small South Carolina hamlet for his track exploits.

Winning the 1992 NCAA Indoor Championship in the 200 meters after serving as a member of the 1991 NCAA Outdoor runner up in the 4×100 relay, Trapp was named Clemson’s Athlete of the Year for the 1991-92 season.

After serving as U.S. Olympic Team alternate in the 4×100 in 1992, Trapp joined the Los Angeles Raiders – who tabbed him as a 3rd-round draft pick earlier that spring.

Trapp went on to play 10 years in the NFL, tallying 324 tackles and 9 interceptions while helping guide the Baltimore Ravens to the franchise’s 1st Super Bowl title in 2000."

The only thing I can figure here is that apparel contracts are being apportioned as revenue among all sports. If that's the case, I doubt there would be any real loss of revenue for the athletic department as a whole, in which case any cost reduction saves the school money (even if it's not much).

Clemson is the first P5 school to cut all three of XC and men's indoor/outdoor.

Good thing their football facility has a full miniature golf course. Better use of money.

Soccer in the ACC and the Carolinas is a pretty big deal. Even further, Clemson has an historically terrific program with 2 national championships, several other final four appearances, and over 30 appearances in the NCAA tournament.

Fun fact. In 2015, Clemson knocked UCSB out in the Sweet 16 en route to a national runner-up finish.

RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
Cross country and track and field programs don't cost nearly as much as other sports, but they're virtually non-existent revenue producers too. The only way any of those teams can generate revenue (outside of donations from alums) is by hosting a meet or invitational, and the entry fees/limited spectator admissions you can charge. A major track invitationals (the Penn Relays, Drake Relays, Texas Relays, etc.) can have quite a few folks in the stands, but they are far and few in-between. I would suspect not a single program in the country (outside of perhaps Penn) is breaking even once you figure revenue and expenses (it's pretty expensive to send a good sized track team to a meet if you're flying to and from and have to house your athletes for a few days at a hotel).

That said, they're operating at minor losses. And it's puzzling to see a school like Clemson that has a rich athletic tradition in track and field (they've had great American sprinters and Caribbean sprinters for decades) dropping its program.

While sports are being cut left and right across the country, UC Santa Barbara has broken ground on a new $5.25 million tennis facility.

RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
San Diego State is cutting women's rowing. In a rare twist, the Aztecs have too many female athletes compared to the rest of the student body and thus, are not compliant with Title IX. After shedding roughly 65 athletes and 20 scholarships, they will be back in balance.

https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/spo...der-equity

“I was caught completely by surprise,” Zack said. “They had been told in various team meetings that San Diego State University was not contemplating cutting sports. Because I was told that or I heard that in many meetings, I relayed that message to them anytime they asked me.

“They’re devastated, they’re crying, they’re upset. They’re dumbfounded how Title IX, which is known for the Yale women’s rowing team and their protests, is being used against them.”

It is the first sport cut by SDSU since the 2001 elimination of men’s volleyball, which won the school’s only Division I national championship in 1973.

Given how Title IX is normally used as an excuse to axe more sustainable men's programs -- or erect kangaroo courts that subvert the Bill of Rights -- I richly enjoyed seeing Title IX bite the heads off those it claims to benefit. You wanna talk to some women really getting screwed by Title IX go find competitive cheerleaders since they're explicitly exempt from Title IX and thus are not required to receive the same level of medical care that a regular athlete would before/during/after their career. Despite competitive cheerleading being substantially more dangerous than full tackle football.
