RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
hey we went about 2 weeks there without somebody whacking a sport. Mostly because everyone was preoccupied cancelling the fall seasons.

Maryland-Eastern Shore (MEAC) indefinitely suspends women's tennis, now down to D1 minimum 14 sports.

This isn’t D1. Ohio’s regional campuses are shutting down their athletics for the year. The regional schools compete against regional campuses of other schools within Ohio (OSU, UC, Miami, etc). I am guessing most if not all of those regional schools will do likewise.

following 2020-21 seasons (if they happen) George Washington is cutting 7 varsity sports.

Co-ed sailing, men's rowing, men's and women's squash (non-NCAA)

men's tennis, men's indoor track and field, women's water polo (NCAA)

GW currently leads all Atlantic 10 members in all 3 facets of sport sponsorship (13 men, 14 women, 27 overall); La Salle will take the lead with 25 overall and 14 women's teams. Fordham will become the new leader in men's sport sponsorship within the A10 membership with 12.

The A10 has postponed all fall sports to Spring. They are waiting to make a decision on basketball, the one sport that matters.

Surprised a P5 would cut S&D. However I didn't even know their was men's gymnastics in the NCAA and cutting Tennis at any school makes sense as they are almost always foreign students

So a bunch of Iowa athletes as of next year won't have scholarships, and fewer scholarship opportunities across the country overall in all of these sports.

But hey, at least the people that support cancelling football season get to feel good. That is what's important.

Your not thinking 3 dimensionally, they are cutting men's sports to clear the deck for Hockey Scholarships.

Many of the Olympic sports athletes are on partial scholarships and are paying some (or possibly full) tuition. Cutting a sport might reduce expenses for an athletic department but cause a net revenue loss for the school.

It needs to be repeated: schools that have cut programs during COVID were more likely than not considering cutting those sports before the pandemic. COVID, unfortunately, likely just gave them a reason/cover to do so.

B1G schools are impacted. A lost athletic scholarship is simply filled by another non athlete student.

This makes a difference only in higher end private schools below capacity and some directional public schools who get funding from the state based on classroom attendance.

men's gymnastics is a common sport in the Big Ten but rare nationwide. Oklahoma and Army off the top of my head but I couldn't name any others without Googling.

Even with Iowa dropping, the B1G still has Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Ohio State and Penn State.

Still 11 men's tennis programs in the B1G as only Rutgers and Maryland previously did not sponsor. MSWIM drops to 9 schools (no Illinois, Maryland, Nebraska or Rutgers). WSWIM will have 12 (no Maryland).

The worst part is Iowa had just built in 2010 a state of the art swimming and diving aquatic center considered to be the best in the nation.

Well, I guess the aquatic center will still be there, maybe it can still host the Big Ten championships. Just Iowa won't have a swimming and diving team that can use it.

Perhaps Iowa could add men's soccer? It's kinda lonely in the state as Drake is the only D1 member who sponsors it.

I like that idea.

RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
at the end of this school year, William & Mary is cutting 7 sports: m/w gymnastics, m/w swimming, men's indoor/outdoor track & field, and women's volleyball. This move takes them from 23 varsity sports, most in the CAA, down to 16 - which will be the fewest in the conference.
