the AD says he knows they're out of compliance and has asked the NCAA for a waiver, also says he has some sort of fallback plan if that request is denied. Even if they get a waiver, it will only be temporary. Will have to add something back, like maybe men's golf.

At least CMU has a plan, unlike when CSU was blindsided yesterday in the group chat sidebar and chaos ensued.

The NCAA declined to give schools temporary waivers. Strange situation. As usual NCAA picks & chooses.

This is a good thread BTW. OP should be kept current.

I believe 8 have to be women's.

Division I can be 7/7 or 6/8 to get to 14.
Haven't readily found FBS split, but it is 16 total.

My understanding is the 7/7 or 6/8 splits apply to all D1 schools. I don't recall where I got this quote from but someone posted it somewhere on this board.

Quote:For a school to be FCS it must be Division I in other sports so that means sponsoring a minimum of 14 sports and award roughly half the total scholarships allowed (i.e. If you award all the allowed scholarships in men's basketball and none in baseball that meets) or a specific minimum value in scholarships. You do not have to award any scholarships in football but cannot offer more than 63. The 63 scholarships can be split among players.

FBS schools must sponsor 16 sports and award 200 or more scholarships across those sports. They must award 90% of the 85 scholarships in football and cannot split scholarships.

Per the NCAA website...

An institution classified in Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) shall meet all the Division I membership requirements set forth in NCAA Division I Bylaws 20.9.1 through 20.9.5 and in addition, shall:

1. Sponsor a minimum of 16 varsity intercollegiate sports, including football, based on the minimum sports sponsorship and scheduling requirements set forth in Bylaw 20. Sponsorship shall include a minimum six sports involving all male teams or mixed teams (males and females), and a minimum of eight varsity intercollegiate teams involving all female teams. Institutions may use up to two emerging sports to satisfy the required eight varsity intercollegiate sports involving all female teams. [Bylaw 20.9.7.1]

2. Schedule and play at least 60 percent of its football contests against members of Football Bowl Subdivision. Institutions shall schedule and play at least five regular season home contests against FBS opponents. [Bylaw 20.9.7.2]

3. Average at least 15,000 in actual or paid attendance for all home football contests over a rolling two-year period. [Bylaw 20.9.7.3]

4. Provide an average of at least 90 percent of the permissible maximum number of overall football grants-in-aid per year over a rolling two-year period. [Bylaw 20.9.7.4-(a)]

5. Annually offer a minimum of 200 athletics grants-in-aid or expend at least four million dollars on grants-in-aid to student-athletes in athletics programs. [Bylaw 20.9.7.4-(b)]

Which leaves them with 5 men's sports (football, basketball, baseball, cross country, wrestling). The minimum for FBS members is 6. They may have stumbled into a Chicago State situation.

If the day after the unprecedented Chicago St fiasco, someone else pulls off another one...I'm done. 03-lmfao

How is it that people who are paid six figures to be D-I athletic directors, and who have an athletic department of several others who also work with the rules, have no one in their department who catches these mistakes before the public announcement is made?

Very timely and informative thread. +3 for you.

There are building and renovation projects that are being postponed or canceled due to COVID-19. Are you planning on recording those casualties too?

I know UTSA has indefinitely postponed construction of their covered practice facility due to funding issues resulting from COVID-19. Here is a link. If I find more, I will post them.

RE: DI Sports Casualties - a running list
Paine? They were supposed to start men's volleyball this fall, but with their accreditation been revoked by SACs, they would be booted from the NCAA. Men's volleyball would be D1.

Urbana had Bowling, but the bowling seems to be a mixed at D1 with club and varsity teams as there seemed to be not enough teams.
Men's volleyball supposed to start in 2020 at the D1 level since there are no men's volleyball championships at D2.

Stop with your uninformed mess. Paine is still accredited although they are on probation. What's happening there is not related to this thread. Urbana does not have varsity bowling. There are absolutely no club level teams playing in the NCAA. Urbana men's volleyball had started their inaugural season when the NCAA shut down so this one could be added to the casualty list.

Originally posted April 16, 2020

April 16, 2020 - Earlier today, the Paine College Board of Trustees was informed of the ruling by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals in its litigation with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). The Eleventh Circuit's decision affirmed the trial court.

Chair of the Board of Trustees, Attorney Barbara E. Bouknight commented, "Paine College Board Members and the Institution's attorneys are reviewing the ruling issued by the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and will weigh all the College's appellate options."

President Cheryl Evans Jones, stated, "During this time Paine will continue to be a member of the accrediting commission Transnational Association of Christian Colleges and Schools (TRACS) as a Candidate for accreditation with full rights to federal and financial aid such as Title IV and Title III." President Jones further commented that under TRACS, Paine College is recognized by the United States Department of Education, the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the International Network for Quality Assurance Agencies in Higher Education.

Despite today's ruling, Paine College will remain a member of SACSCOC pursuant to the lower court's injunction while it considers its further appellate rights.

Paine College, voted one of Georgia's top Christian Colleges in 2019, is focused on its future and will exhaust every option to remain in good standing with SACSCOC and with TRACS.

Obviously everyone's in financial trouble right now, but I wonder if many of these schools are just using the crisis as the scapegoat to cut them.

I agree with this belief. There are Florida Tech people on the D2 board who have said that the new president has been wanting to cut football since he took over. This is also the third straight year that FT has had a reduction in sports.

Whoever this new President is that are cutting sports the past three years also saw a drop of students enrolled. They had close to 10,000 4 years ago, and now they are almost below 6000. Cutting football would erode more students as they will go to West Florida or other closer schools with football.

You just love fiction. Sure, FT had 9,225 in Fall 2016. But 3,930 were nowhere near Melbourne, FL. They had 2,774 Online and 1,156 in Extended Studies at mostly military sites from Alabama to New Jersey. There was a grand total of 5,028 on the Melbourne Main Campus. In Fall 2019 the Melbourne Main Campus had 4,881; a drop of 147 students. The Online and Extended Studies is where FT is losing students; these departments totaled 2,752 in Fall 2019 for a drop of nearly 1,200 students but none of those students contribute to athletics.

I think its more of exposing the financial model this stuff operates on.

Without certain windfalls of money, you can't operate at all.

Phrased more concisely: Football pays nearly all the bills at most places. At a healthy number of places men's basketball also makes money. At a tiny number of places baseball makes money. And in a "count on your fingers" number of places women's basketball loses only a little money. And at a tiny number of places for an even tinier number of sports, they are fully and structurally endowed and need no financial input to keep running.

What you're seeing is the financial stress from just eliminating 2/3 of one year's March Madness payout. So far that's been like a call on the margins ... people on the edge are getting pushed over. No football and you will see what real red ink looks like.
