I love finding old UC games where I don't know the outcome. It's like traveling back in time to go to a game.
This team was probably better than their record. Lost starting QB Bodine to injury.
Wouldn't mind going with the uni's for a throwback for a game. Grey pants not really our look, but it wouldn't hurt for one game.

Gene Steratore is the back judge. I called on Gene's side business for a few years. Great stories.
Was at this game - sure don't miss the Riverfront days.

Would love to see a video of the complete Bearcat/Penn State game from that year....can't find it on YouTube. Remember at the time listening to that great victory on radio; don't think it was on local tv.

RE: 1983 UC football
It's crazy to me that Minter is the only coach we've ever kept for 10 years, or really even anywhere close to 10 years. That, and the Gillman/Blackburn/Studley years are the only periods in UC football that there has ever been any semblance of coaching stability. Sure wish we could have held onto Gillman back in the day. Another 5-10 years of that level of football might have elevated UC football to power status.
In regards to the uniforms, I've always loved that old UC logo featured on the uniforms in this game. Would love to do a throwback jersey/helmet combo featuring it. We don't celebrate our pre-Big East football history enough in my opinion. I'm too young to remember any of that, but enjoy watching through some of these old games. Thank you for posting.

Blackburn and Studley were not good coaches. After Gillman left, the program went downhill. Ray Callahan was not good either. Anyone other than Gillman had a difficult time even with lightweights Xavier and Dayton and especially with Miami.

In the mid to late 40s Ray Nolting was successful in the backs of guys who returned to college after WWII. Took UC to their first bowl game and a 9-2 season. Other than Nolting and Gilman not really much to crow about. Tony Mason put together a few good years but he got UC out on probation before leaving for Arizona State. Pre-1940 we were playing the likes of Boston University and Hardin-Simmons.
The fact is UC did not really begin getting serious and invest in FB until the 2000s. By then it was too late.

There were at least two nfl players on this roster. George Jamison, who played defensive tackle, played linebacker with the Jets. Reggie Taylor had a cup of coffee with the Bucs. Not sure if Alex Gordon or Andrew Stewart were on this team.

Yeah, I have no idea about the coaching acumen of Blackburn and Studley, so I'll definitely take your word for it. Just mentioning stability in the sense that for 18 years, we only went through 3 coaches, with each spending 6 seasons at UC. The only similar period of coaching stability was the Tim Murphy - Rick Minter era.
Some may disagree, but aside from Tuberville, we haven't made any truly bad football or men's basketball coaching hires in the past 30 years. Seems like 1989 was the turning point for UC athletics in that sense, although it took another 15-20 years before the football program caught up with basketball.

RE: 1983 UC football
Speaking of former coaches, the 1983 coach, Watson Brown, managed to hang around as a Division I college football head coach for 31 years at 6 different programs despite an overall record of 136–211–1, only 2 postseason appearances, and only 7 winning seasons out of 31. That's some Dave Lebo (former ECU basketball coach) level suck right there -- actually, even worse.

If your read the book "Bearcats Rising" everyone attributes it to finally breaking the independent ranks and joining C-USA. Can't remember which AD it was but someone was quoted as saying that recruits want to play in a conference so they have a championship to play for, can be named to an all-conference team, etc. In addition conferences have TV deal, bowl tie-ins, etc. UC's rise in football may have been expedited had we been able to get into another conference after we left the MVC in 1970.

Reggie Taylor's first 100 yard game - and just a freshman. Everyone should watch this game to see how explosive RT was on each play.
Alex Gordon was also a freshman on the team and made a couple sacks.

Hilarious seeing the team line up in a wishbone to start the game.

I miss it. Takes me back to watching an Oklahoma(wishbone) v. Nebraska(I formation) type of game. I liked the game better. It was more about the blocking and tackling than the wide open speed. Never been a fan of the high scoring shootout. I remember when 30 points was a crapload of points.

I never paid any attention to UC football growing up. The first game I watched was a snow covered tilt hosting Memphis my freshman year. This video was my first time actually watching RT. You are dead-on with his explosiveness. He pops off the screen when watching.

Hardin-Simmons was not a minor program back then. They went to 6 bowl games in the 40s & 50s (including 2 in the same year, which is odd).
They were in the Border Conference with Texas Tech, UTEP, Arizona, Arizona State, New Mexico, and West Texas A&M. It wasn't until the 1960s that their program fell apart, and that happened to coincide with their conference breaking up in 1962. After 1 year of independence (when they went 1-9 and only played 3 home games), they dropped the football program.

Reggie Taylor was a great Bearcat and amazing to watch--explosive is just the right word. Anyone know what he did after UC or if he's still in town?
