Stats needs to be a mandatory course in schools
If anything this thing has shown me is that 80% of my friends and family have zero concept of statistics.

I took Statistics in high school & college. It's a lot more useful than many other classes they have you take. Maybe in the high school curriculum replace Algebra II with it as a required class?

I have it on good authority that 84% of stats are made up on the spot.

Also, 4/3 of people don't understand fractions.

I sure don't use any of the Calculus I studied in college. Now I use both HS Algebra and College Statistics all the time.

My son's HS had both the Pre-calc/Calculus track and the College Algebra/Statistics track in math.

The issue with mathematics classes in high school is that a high number of teachers are unqualified to teach the classes so kids can get it.

There is some idiocy in the way the most simple math is taught now-a-days. One multiplication problem can take up a whole damn page based on how the teachers want you to show your work. They don’t even teach cursive writing in many schools, anymore.

Statistics DOES need to be mandatory. People need to learn how to interpret large and small data sets.

I think both statistics and calculus should be mandatory in college but hey that just my opinion.

Perhaps a personal finance class with some introductory statistic concepts, I’d agree.

I’ve noticed that younger people that make political content fail miserably to comprehend something as simple as an average.

A statistic will be cited, and they’ll respond with how they have this one friend where that statistic doesn’t apply, therefore the statistic is invalid. And they believe that to be a cogent argument.

How about we start with applied algebra and geometry, either of which applies to many peoples’ real jobs. Stats is dangerous, because most people who get any training in it get two semesters in college and then run out and proclaim themselves “experts” when it comes to statistical analysis.

Like fauci or your local Karen who teaches biology.

There’s probably a place for an analyzing statistics course, but that’s very different from stats I and II

Unfortunately, there are many in academia who argue that the current math requirements are already too high in the US. Those elements are working to remove mandatory math from non STEM degrees in college and believe going beyond Pre-Algebra in high school is excessive.

Stop it! I hate that saying. You can improve 110%, but you can't give 110% effort.

RE: Stats needs to be a mandatory course in schools
I think every engineering discipline has "Probability and Statistics for Engineers" as a requirement for accredited engineering schools now. No doubt some of the other STEM majors will have access to it as well.

I agree that some kind of Prob and Stats class for HS and non-STEM majors should be taught. It doesn't have to be that involved. At a minimum, people should understand mean, median, mode, quartiles, standard deviations, variation and simple stats restricted to normal distributions.

This. Very few qualified/capable instructors for a subject like that.
