Only in Chicago/Illinois can you have an institution with a 13% graduation rate, have hundreds of millions in debt, have numerous high-profile scandals, and have its athletic programs in a conference centered in the western US. It is a crime that taxpayers have to continuously fund a repeatedly failing enterprise. Frankly, it's nothing short of a miracle that Chicago State has managed to stay at the D1 level this long.

CNN reported that a lot of HBCUs that are in the same boat as Chicago State could be closed for good including some of the state ones. Could the COVID-19 going forced them to downgrade?

Because of where it's located and who attends the school, it'd be a category 5 spitstorm if they closed Chicago State. They might be able to do it if they put WIU on the block as a package deal. Might.

Don’t close it for good. Shutter it’s athletics and make it a branch campus of another state institution.

Yeah, because that worked out for NEIU. The other state institutions are all falling apart just like Chicago State is. The only way to get kids in Illinois to show up would be to move it up to some small town in Wisconsin and make it a UW branch school. The state's public universities that aren't UIUC, UIC, and ISU have reputations in the toilet.

Illinois is in a ton of trouble. The state is estimating a 20% decrease in tax receipts ($7 billion). The state employees' pension fund is only 40.3% funded ($137 billion short). And their credit rating is one step above "junk bond" status.

Illinois' universities are in bad shape even without state cuts. This is from a few days ago:

https://www.wbez.org/stories/how-is-the-...452a35684f

Budget deficit projections according to the article:
Northwestern - 90 million projected shortfall
U. of Chicago - 220 million projected shortfall
Loyola - 50 million projected shortfall
Depaul - $80 million drop in revenue
University of Illinois system - $158 million in lost revenue by the end of June
City Colleges of Chicago - $17 million deficit before the pandemic

And people wonder why our stadium renovations were kicked down the line, the state as a whole is floundering

I would pay someone to make David join that call. Would definitely tune in just for that.

This just happened yesterday:
https://twitter.com/Eurohopes/status/126...49/photo/1

2020 class Luxembourgish center Lou Demuth (’00) has committed to Chicago State, per sources. Demuth, a 7'0 big man who has been playing for Grengewald, averaged 14.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 blocks in the 2019 FIBA U20 European Championship Division B.

On Friday, they hired a new head coach for woman's basketball:
https://www.espn.com/womens-college-bask...ball-coach

I really doubt they are dropping sports.

I logged on. You don't hear a thing. But if you register they will let you make a statement.

So after 10 minutes of silence, except one person asking to register, I just hung up.

Sports sponsorship may be about dropping down to D-II or NAIA. On the other hand it could be suspending sports for the 2020-21 school year (this is what I expect). The school doesn't have the resources to cover COVID19 requirements.

We'll know in a couple hours.
