I take the view that the trend will continue downward as we achieve herd immunity, continue to revise and improve treatment, and the items macgar32 mentioned (masks, awareness, sanitation). There maybe bumps (a few thousand spike here and there); but materially we are headed to mitigation of this and a return to a more normal life. The other view is we will spike up to a level of infection that returns us to New York of late March. I think that is highly unlikely. The process of diagnosing and treating COVID have dramatically changed.

People in the risk factors lives are changed forever (people over 55 or with heart, lung, or immunity disorders); but under 55 and healthy the impact is light or non-existent.

The more time we go without a spike, the less a chance there is to have one... we'll be fine.

Immunologists have long used 70% exposure among a population as the break point when a virus is no longer capable of epidemic proportions, i.e. when herd immunity is obtained. So yes immunity is achieved proportionally & progressive with exposure.

The only political wishing going on, is the people that want it to stay around--and continue to keep AMERICA on shut-down and closed for business.

No one is wishing. The 7 day moving average for new cases and deaths is declining in all countries where testing exceeds 25k per million. There hasn't been an uptick anywhere once testing reaches that level (in countries that have a free press). When that pattern changes; I will adjust my expectations as will many billions of others. Till then, lets get out of the house...

They never stopped in Florida, they just practiced off campus. Our neighborhood turf field has been full every day since mid-March.

They didn't stop in TN either. My local high school has been working out for the last month, off campus.

Nice to see priorities are in place...
Kids dont die from it

By priorities I mean classes were cancelled but they still found a way to practice.

But to your comment of kids don't die ...Their parents can.

If you look long enough you can find a study to agree with anything. I am sure there are tons of studies on the other side. To quote a "Nurse" who went on the internet to find studies to support her view is misleading. Do you think she didn't find any studies that said masks do help...Or chose not to include those because it didn't support her viewpoint.

But I think the general consensus is masks do help...

I guess the question is who are you going to believe...A nurse who googles to support her view or entire organizations of health officials across many countries and continents.

RE: High Schools resume football practice - why not colleges?
Take Japan , for example:

Their whole society switched to anti-infection mode in February when the virus first began to spread.Shops and businesses set up hand sanitizers at the entrance, and it became a civic duty to wear a face mask.

Japan typically goes through 5.5 billion face masks every year — 43 per person. Sales of face masks skyrocketed as the virus took hold. Masks have been rationed.

The Japanese appear to have understood that a person can be infected without showing symptoms, said Michael Paumen, a German business manager who has lived in Japan for many years: "You put the mask on to protect others, so you yourself don't transmit viruses."

Here’s a study: The widespread use of face masks appears to have slowed down the spread. A recent study by five Western physicians, including Fabian Svara from the Caesar research group in Bonn and Matthias Samwald from the Medical University in Vienna, found that masks "decrease the transmission of droplets or aerosols containing viral particles by mask wearers."

I won't bother with your last statement there....but

I'm curious. What appropriate precautions might those be---

Should the coaches who are at risk shelter in place..? Maintain 6 feet of separation between themselves and the team...? Wear a mask...? Stay out of the locker room....? Skip the away games...? Wear a mask ...? Wipe the football with disinfectants after each touch or perhaps wear protective gloves...? Wear a mask...?

Really? I looked long & hard to find actual studies to support the use of masks as effective against virus. Lots of opinion & statements but nil on supporting studies. I can add a dozens more real studies on the use of masks & the declared ineffectiveness against virus.

Here's another article that states conclusively there are no studies that support the use of masks to combat viruses.

Depends on the coach & the specifics of his/her compromised health. But healthy players & coaches have no more to be concerned about than the various flu strains.

RE: High Schools resume football practice - why not colleges?
Belief should be reserved for Religion.

Covid-19 is different from flues in the following very easily understandable ways:

1. Humans have built up antibodies to the regular flues.

2. We know very little about covid-19--is it seasonal...how it infects healthy cells.... The influenza virus itself was identified in 1933, so people have had a long time to figure out how the 'regular' flu works.

3. Covid-19 is asymptomatic...infected people who have no symptoms are contagious

4. The 'regular' flu and covid-19 are caused by different types of viruses.
Both are made up of RNA (some diseases’ genetic material is DNA), the protein layers that surround the RNA, causing the immune response, are different in the two pathogens.

5. How they attack the body is totally different, starting with the packaging the viruses come in, and how they continue through the physical body seeking out the weakest entry to a vital organ...though the lungs and the heart appear to be an easy entry point for most.

6. Covid-19 looks to be more transmissible: Flu also has a shorter incubation period than COVID-19. It usually between one and four days for someone infected with the flu to show symptoms. With COVID-19, the incubation period may be up to 14 days, making it more likely people will spread the virus before they show symptoms.

7. Flu is more consistent--symptom wise. People who get the flu show the same symptoms. There isn’t the same degree of asymptomatic carriers walking around with the flu without knowing it.

For people who do have symptoms of COVID-19 have a range of them--from a headache to being wiped out to loss of taste, a skin rash and having a cough. Some, but not all, people seem to get fevers.

Of course there are no studies of the effectiveness of masks against Covid 19...

He states that masks are not effective against 1 virus (The flu). And this is one mans opinion..And it is not even his field of expertise.

But hey stay in the bubble. Every other country in the world has got it wrong. This guy knows what he is talking about.

Should they be concerned about going home?

This is what is so confusing about people who use this argument.

To be clear...I am not saying they shouldn't practice. All I am saying is this line of thinking is flawed.
