If the FBS became semipro
I think many of us expect FBS to eventually become semipro, especially once players get paid. Here's my expected alignment (which explanation of less obvious teams)

Western Conference

Washington
Oregon
Cal
USC
UCLA
San Diego State
Arizona
UNLV
Colorado
Texas
UTSA (San Antonio is a top 20 pop city)
Houston
Tulane
UAB
Alabama (Advised to not antagonize SEC fans)
LSU (See Alabama)
Missouri
Minnesota
Wisconsin

Eastern Conference

Northwestern (Chicago bigger than Champaign)
Purdue (Better football pedigree IMO)
Notre Dame
Cincinnati (Cincinnati is a good size city)
Ohio St
Michigan
Pittsburgh
Temple
Rutgers (closest team to NYC)
Boston College
Maryland
UNC (public college)
Georgia Tech (Atlanta bigger than Athens)
Florida St
Florida (see Alabama)
UCF
Miami
Vanderbilt (Nashville a big city
Memphis (Memphis a big city)
Louisville

I’m a fan of starting a Spring (and when I mean Spring I mean actual Spring, not February) League of 8-12 teams at first based in College Towns with say 20 of the roster spots going to players with local ties—let’s call it an Alumni Football Conference.

Interesting idea.

Will make some people around here cry though.

Especially Dennis Dodd the Wyoming fan who desperately needs a MWC/100 team cut line to ensure his Pokes are in.

Market size, hmm. USF is in Tampa, last I heard they were the #10 DMA. I think this is more a fan list then a fact list.

But you don't want to directly compete with NFL franchises. You would go into markets underserved or untapped by the NFL. If we went with your premise, you would add SMU instead of USTA, add Arizona State instead of Arizona, and only keep FSU based on the Florida/Alabama/LSU rationale instead of adding USF. Heck, you would even add Kansas because it's closer to KC than Missouri is to either KC or STL.

Devil: you're OBVIOUSLY correct USF would be a reasonable invite! And the list is just my rumination on the concept.

Please stop using "martketz" when deciding to make these hypothetical lists. Hardly anyone in major cities care for the smaller G5 teams there.

Exactly. It’s makes no sense. There’s a reason that every semi pro league fails
