Virus induced, time killing thread for starting CUSA 3.0 over
We will need to be a little thick skinned on this thread since it will be ripe for insults and bloviating.

If cusa 3.0 had waited until the smoke had totally cleared from the BE/AAC raid, it would have been left with these members to decide expansion. No input from ECU or other former members.

USM, UAB, Rice, Marshall and UTEP.

If at that point they had wanted to get back to 12 in order to have a fb champ game (rule at the time) who do you think the 7 additions should have been? Or do you think they should have gone small and expanded to 8 or 10?

My guess is they would have gone to 12 and regional consiiderations would not have been as strong as they are now.

My 7 adds would have been:

UNT......to me this was the most obvious addition. Already FBS and in the DFW area.
Arkansas St.... good football and adds a state.
La Tech...another obvious addition with good athletics and keeps the state of LA.
ULL....good basketball and location and football was ok too.
App St... fcs but strong brand, good football.
FIU... Potential plus keeping cusa in Florida plus Marshall said so
FAU...see FIU

RE: Virus induced, time killing thread for starting CUSA 3.0 over
I guess if we are playing that "what if" game, Charlotte would still be in the multi-bid A-10 for everything but football (and not getting one of the bids), and either playing FCS football in the SoCon or CAA, or an independent. Net-net, I am not sure that is a bad deal.

As a UTEP fan I don't expect you to know much about NC geography, but if your team was coming to play App State, you would probably charter a plane to Charlotte (4.5 hours), unload the plane and get on buses (1 hour), drive to App State (2 hours). By the time the players get to their hotel room you are at 8 hours of travel. Just don't let them schedule you in November, because there is a decent chance of ice and snow. Depending on game time, your team will either fly home Sunday (3 day trip for a game), or you maybe get home in the middle of the night (early Sunday morning).

Now don't get me wrong, many Charlotte and Appy fans have come to the conclusion that our mutual disdain is best when directed at each other annually, so we are now starting to admit that being the in same conference makes sense, but our travel to Boone, NC is easy compared to most people's. All I am saying is be careful what you wish for here.

Football teams charter...sadly no one really cares about the other sports.

Yes, I said charter in my post. The thing is the flight requires an airport runway to land on. UTEP would need to charter 75 single engine planes if they wanted to land in Boone, and it would take all day just to get them on the ground with that one runway.

I’ve heard of the “Air Raid Offense” but this is ridiculous!

Yep, I'm aware but just thinking that at the time Charlotte didn't have football and it might have been that instead of looking just for markets and ease of travel the conference might have looked for strength in athletics. If that criteria would be used today, UTEP would be on the outside looking in. Just curious what others think might have been done with expansion had the 5 schools had waited until all the raiding was done. Nothing against any of the current members.

If they had waited till 2020 or 2019 or probably 2018, with travel and on the field/court results....

The other 4 would have most likely voted UTEP out and went with a more central conference.

Two schools in Texas...Rice and UNT
Two schools in La. Tech and ULL
Two in Alabama UAB and Troy
One school in W. Vir. Marshall
One school in Miss, S. Miss
Two schools in NC. UNCC and Appy
One school in KY
One school in Tenn

Each school has 4 to 6 driveable games along with each school a history of winning in basketball or football. Some both. I didnt add Western because I'm a fan. I added Western and Middle because both schools brides the gap from the west to the east and a clear line of 4 west, 4 center, 4 east. You can go from BG to Middle to UAB to Troy with just a slight S curve and no big detours

Still a little spread out but if you are going to base a conference with schools already in Texas and one in W. Vir. its going to be spread out

UTEP is a school that loves sports (basketball/football), in a city you wouldnt look at and get that from the demographics. Put the program, with the same support, in east Texas and at worse it's in the AAC. But, there's also a but....

would it get the backing of the city if it wasnt sitting out there all alone? That we dont know. Hopefully one day, soon, UTEP, can get in the MTW, the only conference it fits in.

Yep, the mwc would be ideal for UTEP but they better improve quite a bit in the 2 major sports soon or it won't happen.

I’ve always felt CUSA’s problem is that it’s too big. Even going back to the CUSA 2.0 days. If it would have stayed at 10 it would have been in a much better position to absorb the football leftovers from the Big East. Anyway, fast word to CUSA 3.0 and I see the same problem but worse. This would have been my additions.

Original five
UTEP
RICE
USM
UAB
Marshall

Fill in with
UNT
La Tech
Arkansas St
WKU
MTSU

A somewhat tight geographical conference.

I suppose that I am an outlier but the only problem that I see with the present line up is that none of us are consistently winning relevant OOC games in football or basketball. Consistent winning builds fan bases and garners better media deals and makes travel less expensive. Being in sizable metro markets also enhances our attractiveness.

Well the saying that winning solves everything may not be entirely true but it certainly helps with a lot of things. Attendance, tv contracts, money, all helped by winning. Winning is something I'd like UTEP to seriously consider going forward.

I did say I was going to make it my word of the day. 04-cheers

it's a new day.

I believe that I will use it as my word of the day. I find bloviating is relaxing on occasion. It may be the new transcendental meditation of this time. I am sure books and videos are forthcoming. I envision new service industry is on the horizon to tout the health benefits of regular bloviation to the human experience.

Do not confuse bloviating with flatulence, although there are similarities.
