You were the one who spoiled the mass exodus before the WMU game, but it was delayed 6 months. Do you know why? Was there a malfunction in the portal that caused a lag?

RE: Lorbeck gone
Notice that all of these ... Lorbeck, Heflin, Perez, Brinkman, ... are veteran players? Good players? Not blaming them for looking for greener pastures, for whatever reasons, and I do not blame THammock for any of this ... we don't know their personal reasons ... . But I wonder how much/if a lack of confidence in the MAC has to do with this, with all the recent school and conference announcements r.e. changes and cutbacks. Just my own thought.

Lorbeck had 62 total tackles, 12.5 TFL and 6.5 sacks in 38 games. 1.6 Tackles per game avg, 1 TFL every 3 games and 1 sack every six games. Hard to believe that production isn't easily replaceable. Cam Mattox showed nice potential and production in very limited time as a true freshman last year.

I thought Lorbeck was coming on late last season so I'm sorry to see him go. Regarding all the recent departures I see three factors:

1. Carey guys may not have been feeling the new staff. It happens with coaching changes. This will definitely be Hammock's team going forward.

2. The guys had way too much time to sit around and think about it instead of being busy with spring ball.

3. That's just the way it is for G5's now, and even more so when they pass the one free transfer rule. A decent number of good players are going to bounce every year. G5 football is going to start looking like high end college hoops, lots of freshmen and sophomores.

To me there definitely has to be disconnect between the new staff and the current players. This is worrisome. We have never seen such a string of bad news with this program. Horrid times.

I'm not going to disagree with you on this one. He came in and said "there are three sides to a coin. And you are all on the third side. That's the edge. You'll have to fight for your spot on the field as well as team." As a sign of the start of culture change.

We then saw some pretty decent players like Justin Hall and Koko transfer out. And we saw Childers lose the starting job to Bowers, who is clearly the better qb, but I'm not sure produced as much as we'd like to see in the field.

I'm going to say it must be a shock to the players to have a dramatic culture change. Especially because they went from MAC champs to not even being Bowl eligible. But at the same time, Hammock was brought in to be more than just a MAC champ and a team that attends Bowls. Again, both he and the administration (Frazier and Dr Freeman) have said publically that they want to get to that next level and Freeman stated she wanted a new Orange Bowl sweater. This is something that's going to take a lot of work and a lot of new bodies/mindsets in the room.

His recruiting has clearly showed that, as I see a lot of great athletes coming in to NIU. However, great his recruiting may be...he needs to win right now. And I like the rest of you, am skeptical how he plans to do that, losing decent staters like Lorbeck, Harbison, Perez, Brinkman, McKie, and Heflin. But again, who knows what he's up to. It seems like he's busy building up a team of monsters. And I have faith in that...

My confidence for NIU football to have great success in the long term remains, but short term starting to feel less optimistic. That said, hopefully we have some studs behind these guys ready to roll with a great opportunity.

Even though you will only get political speak, I would like to get some kind of feedback from Hammock on these departures. We get blow by blow tweets on the positive news which I love, it would be refreshing to hear from him when the news is less than perfect as well.

I'm the same way. We took a huge gamble on a guy who wants to bring us to the next level.

But also, it's important to note that if Hammock isn't the right guy. You better believe we will stop at nothing to find the right guy. And there's plenty in the pipeline...Matt Simon, Jeff Knowles, Matt Canada, Kevin Kane

Koko really? All he did was fair catch. Never saw any speed.

Justin Hall was only a promise.

Ham has mentioned that he is lokking for players who can compete with the big boys so he wants to recruit them. Think length, strength and speed.

Ham also has said he wants measurable speed. Koko may have fit into the not measurable part.

RE: Lorbeck gone
The thing I find most worrisome about this is the timing of it all. The season ended basically in November. These athletes have had six to seven months to jump into the portal and if they did back then I would imagine their options would have been greater.

Are these kids smart enough to presume that for schools like NIU the schedule for the upcoming season will not be complete. Will there not be games against Iowa and Maryland? No big stage for them to play on? Do they know something......???

I would not be so troubled if these were spread out, done back in January, or if we didn’t live in a world of uncertainty right now—-not just in sports.

The fact that we get four of them this week, in May, makes me wonder what is going on. These are all upperclassmen who may be just looking to play......

RE: Lorbeck gone
It is quite apparent by now to anyone who watches regarding, Hammock what you see is what you get. Rather a scathing indictment on behalf of the Huskies leaders, and core players. It's funny watching users in this thread suggest plausible alternatives to why our leaders left. If there were any ounce of truth to these alternatives they would be prevalent all around the MAC, and the rest of Divison 1 ...they are not.. Truth is difficult, excuses a lot easier.

During the span of year and half we have managed to cut all ties to our glory years, and legacy. Regarding the present we are a bottom 10- 20 team in the country. We are Eastern Michigan circa 2010. Regarding, the future not one of us has seen enough, are equipped enough or have a crystal ball to discuss what will happen. Speculating about what might happen are for programs who have absolutely nothing going on. Remember you cannot make chicken soup from chicken s_ _ t.

....and pray tell, jb——back to your agenda.....

I’m waiting to see a player, who has the balls enough to leave to better himself, to give a reason why? Would be happy to jump on your bandwagon when we get a flurry of “Hammock is too hard on us”, “Hammock is too easy on us”, “Hammock is unfair” —-anything is good.

We do need to remember the roster and talent that Hammock acquired was much less than the roster the previous coach acquired (ie—no quarterback). And like a wiseman once said “remember you cannot make chicken soup from chicken s__t.”

And, full disclosure, my above statement is not fair at all to the previous coach, I know it—-it would have been almost impossible to keep a program of our stature at that level. The thing your coach did most was keep us from being a bottom 10-20 team like we saw happen to Kent St and Bowling Green after their best years. I absolutely applaud him for that, but it’s not hard to realize that he took over a legit top 40 program and left us with a bottom 40 program.

If our arc would have stayed top 40 for two years after the Orange Bowl the previous coach would have been gone long before seven years.

That was kinda the reason for my speculation earlier ... guys with limited eligibility left, the MAC making changes, MAC schools making changes, the uncertainty of what's right ahead. Imo no covid-19 crisis (yeah, I know, that's being blamed for everything) and these guys play it out at NIU. I think that's a realistic thought. If I had something to offer and one year left, I'd think seriously about transfer also. And spread out would have been better, but the real &%$# didn't hit the fan until early May.
