RE: Lorbeck gone
I believe NIU was on a bottom 10 trajectory even before Hammock got here. The coaching change appears to have expedited the process though. In the long long term it might be for the better to get the bottoming out years out of the way quicker than continue the slow descent NIU was on. What makes this especially problematic is that the declining football program is occurring in an environment where the whole existence of the conference is even in question.

During the span of year and half we have managed to cut all ties to our glory years, and legacy. Regarding the present we are a bottom 10- 20 team in the country. We are Eastern Michigan circa 2010. Regarding, the future not one of us has seen enough, are equipped enough or have a crystal ball to discuss what will happen. Speculating about what might happen are for programs who have absolutely nothing going on. Remember you cannot make chicken soup from chicken s_ _ t.

I would say when Carey left, took many of his assistants, ties were cut ti title run years.

Would it have been better to name a positional coach with no exp HC? Maybe a grad asst under Carey?

And most people would say naming Hammock, a former player and coach at NIU, keeping it in the family, ties to the past. Just me.

Glad some aren't "speculating" why players are leaving in May, after spring classes in person are canceled and it looks like no football in the foreseeable future in IL, (maybe even in person classes) possibly nation, in front of fans.

But again, glad all the facts are in.

As soon as someone mentions Hammock, and any kind of alleged situation with the team, it's here-we-go-again about Carey. Get over it. The guy left voluntarily. If he had been fired, there might be a debate. Not the case. A decision was then made, after, to get somebody with strong NIU ties who might stay awhile for that reason and build NIU to whatever is the "next level." Obviously, that was going to be a work-in-progress no matter what. Then the whole Covid-19 thing hit. Not Carey's fault. Not Hammock's fault. But we don't need a throwback to the Carey regime to explain what's going on today. In fact, unless it's a historical thread, I can't understand why anyone mentions Carey. Just imo.

Maybe you have to graduate to get into the portal as a grad transfer, not just a regular transfer. Still only position downgraded is Heflin's.

As I mentioned earlier, I think it is real important for Hammock to come out with a communication on all these Transfer Portal losses. He has to know the fan base might be feeling like the sky is falling & without any feedback the default for most fans to fill in the blanks with negative thoughts.

I agree 100% pvk——-in my posts i purposely try to avoid names so i don’t look overly jilted. I just have a problem on this board with some pointing 100% of the current issue of the program on Hammock who has been the coach of this team for what, 17 months?

Please, of all posters, I may respect you the most—-you post on all sports—and I have always loved your insight especially, to women’s hoops....but it is not “as soon as someone mentions Hammock”——-it’s “as soon as someone with a personal agenda mentions Hammock”

I feel like if they were to transfer because of Hammock, it would’ve been done months ago. They haven’t been together or practicing, so it’s not like Hammock could’ve done something to trigger some mass exodus.

I wonder if they see Pritzker’s phases and are worried NIU won’t play football, so they’re trying to transfer to a state where the chance of playing football is higher, so they don’t risk missing out on their final year.

I think it’s important to differentiate between attacking Hammock vs merely questioning him. You’ll spot the ones with the attack agendas. It’s usually just a few. But you can be all on board with Hammock as I am, yet still wonder if there’s some kind of disconnect between older players and the new coaching staff. One a little above and beyond the normal conflicts a coaching change brings.

Definitely. It is impossible to tell with the mass transfers where to point the finger. It may not even be Hammock's fault, it could be very similar to the 90s Novak era when you had to get all the bad apples and quitters of the program. We just dont know.

All four who left this week were starters. I highly doubt they were “bad apples”, and, if they were, we are in real trouble.

You are correct ... bad phrasing on my part. I also agree with Rabid Squirrel and ChicagoHuskie ... these are all starters, Hammock should say something about it, and there's nothing wrong with questioning the HC. He does not walk on water.

Maybe bad apples was a bad phrase, but like in the late 90s and early 2000s, you need to find and establish leaders that set the bar for everyone. That is what guys like Duffy and Drew did, I am not sure NIU over the past 4 years or so has really had true team leaders.

Until Pritzker makes a decision and finances in order, NIU athletics will say nothing.

Mostly agree with an addition.

You have to have leaders who fit and buy in to the system. These were all Carey guys and sometimes the old guard simply doesn't mesh with the new leadership. It sucks, but if they don't mesh, then they aren't effective leaders. Hammock will develop his own leaders. Some of them will be guys who he either brought or brings in and some will be holdovers from the Carey teams and were looking at stepping up or for an opportunity to be leaders (or just find out that they are leaders because a void happens with these departures).

Honestly, I'm surprised there weren't more defections last year so maybe this was due to happen. I do believe the shut down (across all of college football and not just in Illinois) has inhibited this and made it easier for them now that the semester is ending.

They were all starters but none of them are irreplaceable. It stings but it's nothing to get too worried over.

Pretty clear Hammock has gone the Fleck route where he tears it down and then builds it up. If you look at his recruiting, i'm confident they're headed in the right direction. Might be a tough year though. Going to be super young.

I'm not worried about the offense but the defense could be a challenge this year without the depth.

I agree. They have to play, Pritzker and IL do not seem to be ready to open. This is not 100%, on Hammock.
We better get ready to announce we are playing and soon. If NIU does not play or plays 6,7 games it is over at NIU. DONE as a D-1.

If we do play, shouldn't we benefit greatly from the transfer portal? With talk of the Pac12 and MWC not playing there should be plenty of players looking to finish their careers on the field. God knows we will have more available scholarships than most with all our departures.

Perhaps some of these decisions to leave could be a result of the university hurting. Enrollment being down, therefore the area not thriving as it once did. What if the university was booming and the area had all sorts of new things going on, perhaps that would make guys (and even coaches) want to stay. It seems all directional schools sports have kind of weakened the past 10 years...which could be the result of these IL universities not thriving.

Just a thought

Well odds are in our favor of hearing some good news soon....

I would hope we get a transfer or two of our own with these roster spots open.
