RE: Thread wherein we list colleges and universities that are eliminating sports
This is perverted. Everything comes down to the all-mighty dollar, but you can’t ignore the moral wrong of eliminating all these scholarships for negative cash flow sports. The whole concept of student athlete is a farce that I don’t think even the most optimistic can defend now. I wish we’d break off from the big schools down the line so we can maintain a robust field of sports and preserve our amateur status. And let’s be honest about it, the athletes from the sports that are being abolished are, on average, much better students than the athletes of the protected sports football and basketball. The whole thing is an embarrassment. Who even gives a damn anymore?

This was very interesting from the UConn site:

Q: Why wasn't football cut or moved to FCS level?
A: The savings from such a move would be outweighed by a significant decline in revenue opportunities. The newly-signed agreement with CBS Sports Network, would be nullified by a reclassification to FCS. Similarly, our multi-media marketing rights deal with Learfield/IMG College and our all-sport equipment deal with Nike would suffer greatly or not exist if we dropped to the FCS level. Currently, revenue from these two agreements is nearly $3.7 million annually.

Additionally, UConn would forfeit the ability to maximize revenue generation by securing premium guarantee games and would no longer have the ability to secure quality opponents such as Purdue, Syracuse, North Carolina, Maryland and Boston College in home-and-home series.

Although I'm sure the "revenue opportunities" are different compared to UConn, isn't this also one of the arguments against ODU considering dropping to FCS for football?

That’s Why I posted it. I would think the arguments would be similar.

RE: Thread wherein we list colleges and universities that are eliminating sports
UConn also eliminated a non-scholarship sport, eliminating the tuition that came to the school as a result. In Division I, it's amazing to me that Athletic Departments can "save money" by costing its parent school tuition dollars. Funny money and fuzzy math. At the Division III non-scholarship level, when schools add sports, they're primarily enrollment driven and the income from that student being on campus is recognized by the overall school, not just the Athletics Department's ledger. Example: Albion added men's and women's wrestling just yesterday.

Tennis has lost 50 programs across all divisions since March 11. FIFTY. Division I tennis lost five teams in 48 hours at three different schools. As many drops as wrestling's had, they've never once had a year where they lost 50 teams. That doesn't count the drops at places like Valpo and FAMU that announced cuts prior to the pandemic's expected financial impact.

Southern Utah and Northern Colorado dropped men's and women's tennis in the past two days.

Also found that Division II Notre Dame College dropped women's tennis, hasn't issued any sort of press release and rather than just removing the team from the website menu, they've deleted the entire women's tennis archive off the website. You can get old ODU wrestling pages by typing in some basic URLs, for example, but NDC just axed any mention of the team ever existing. NDC had a roster online with women's tennis two weeks ago, now ZILCH.

Saw something on the realignment board that makes sense: tennis has a lot of international players and with the state of international travel being what it is, that makes it an easy target for cuts (plus not as many domestic program alum to fight for its survival).

It's also one of the only sports where their facility can remain on campus and still have utility as is.

I don't have an answer for either question.

While not exactly eliminating the sport, D-II Morehouse College announced they are cancelling their football season this year. I would expect a few of the lower division schools will follow suit. Someone had to start it.

Football and all other fall sports. The public D2s in California are as well. Wouldn't be terribly surprised to see a lot more D2s and D3s shut it down for the season/year before you see big movement in D1, since sports isn't much of a revenue producer at that level and they can go into dry dock for a while without taking it on the chin.

Issues how to count the Central Valley Conference (California CC) and the Maricopa County Schools in Arizona not yet officially confirmed for the year, my count has 219 cut sports and 199 sports cancelled or suspended.

Yikes. That total number has increased by 136 teams this week alone.

True, but with Stanford dropping only 23 D1 schools offer men's volleyball and the NCAA tournament includes D2 programs. Whereas with women's volleyball, ODU was one of the few, and arguably one of the biggest, athletic programs not to offer it until now.
