That's great writing, opinionated, brutal, honest...and a call to action, many schools could be substituted for UCONN and the story would still be correct.

8 sports to be cut, maybe ODU's admin is better than what credit the keyboard warriors understand.

Division III Earlham College in Indiana is dropping four sports - men's and women's golf and tennis.

https://www.goearlham.com/general/2019-2...0527pu31xb

Only the fifth D3 sport to be dropped at a school not closing. The other is Ohio Wesleyan's women's rowing team.

By comparison, you normally see a net gain of 4-7 D1 and D2 sports a year. From 2017-18 to 2018-19, D3 added 130.

Brown drops 11, framing it as moving them to club status.

Brown is an Ivy. They provide financial assistance based on need. There are no athletic scholarships.

Wow, Brown had 38 scholarship sports?

Interestingly, co-ed and women's sailing move up to varsity status.

Even with the cuts, the school still has 29 sports at the scholarship level.
All of the Ivies have huge athletic departments.

They are operationally at 11 teams, WELL below the 14 required to maintain D1 status. Unless a) they have three cheaper sports that they're on the verge of introducing or b) the NCAA will allow D1 schools to carry fewer than the minimum sports for an indefinite period, they may be moving to D2. That may be why talk about Robert Morris joining the Horizon has hotted up.

Bowling Green reinstates baseball, D3 Delaware Valley dropped men’s and women’s tennis a couple of weeks ago. That wasn’t widely reported.

Just read where some ECU alumni are raising money in an attempt to reinstate men's and women's swimming.

I wonder what the number (gift-wise) would look like to get ODU to reverse that wrestling decision. Might be worth taking a run at it if there's interest and enough hurt.

Apparently, Wood put the number at $40 mil

Wood told James Nicholson, 2x All-American, they’d need 25 million. Wood also refused to meet with wrestling alumni and business leaders once the group reached out to the Rector and Vice Rector. He also poo poo’d the change.org petition to one alum, claiming he signed it as “Mickey Mouse” and questioned the legitimacy of the 13,000 people who signed it - falsely claiming the site was soliciting payment for names - which isn’t how that site operates.

Broderick’s office is ignoring the alumni who still seek answers, Wood refused to meet with anymore than 2-3 people and got upset when people “above” him were asked to be involved. He wanted to be the biggest at the table.

Coach Martin is on a “gag order,” so I’ve been told. mats were auctioned off ASAP (hampering the likelihood of even a club program) and Broderick’s office reneged on my request to answer questions about the student welfare of how the decision was handled. My FOIA request responses have been slow and riddled with issues, including providing an undeliverable mailing address in Portsmouth.

UAH and Bowling Green heard their people out - we haven’t. Whether you agree or not, one high-ranking ODU official told me on the condition of anonymity, “We f*cked this up.”

I’m not going to win anyone over, but the utter disrespect we’ve been shown, simply wanting a meeting and answers has been nothing short of smug arrogance.

Ok, back to the topic - Northeast CC in Nebraska dropped men’s and women’s rodeo.

California Community Colleges (CCCAA), the league where DeMarco came from.

I'm inquiring with the school to get the exact intent behind "suspended," because comments from the football coach seem to indicate this was a straight cut. Won't put it on the list until that's confirmed.

Division III Elmira eliminates three small roster sports, men's and women's cross country and women's golf.

https://athletics.elmira.edu/news/2020/6...anges.aspx

As of June 5 at 5 p.m. Central, that's 148 teams gone.

RE: Thread wherein we list colleges and universities that are eliminating sports
Since the last post, we've seen:

Brown reinstate three teams (indoor track, outdoor track and cross country)
Hampton cut men's and women's golf
Arkansas-Pine Bluff suspended men's and women's tennis (claims to reevaluate after next year)
Division III Becker College silently dropped men's lacrosse and field hockey without any press release.
Division II Roberts Wesleyan dropped men's and women's tennis and men's golf.

94 teams axed/suspended from schools that are still open, overall we're at 154 teams. Tennis has taken the biggest hit with 28 teams slashed.

RE: Thread wherein we list colleges and universities that are eliminating sports
To be completely honest, to me this seems like schools are right-sizing their athletic departments. I get that there are people whose feelings will be hurt in the process, and that is unfortunate. I also get that a lot of ADs don't do a great job of handling the cuts, but at the end of the day, sponsoring more sports than you can afford to support just to avoid bad PR or hurting feelings seems like a pretty bad idea. If a business were just to keep a bunch of departments that have been losing money for decades, we would think they are crazy. I get this isn't truly a business model, and there is a balance between supporting sports that do not generate revenue, but add to the university in other ways (not honestly sure how Golf adds anything to the university, but I will give the benefit of the doubt). There does have to be some sanity, though. If you have a bunch of sports that are losing money, and you cannot afford to support the sports that make money, and by doing so support all of the non revenue sports, to the level that they need to be supported, then you are not managing your program correctly.
