USM Beat Writer: C-USA and the Sun Belt have to realign
Quote:For the Group of 5 conferences that don’t bring in millions of dollars in TV money, life may return to simpler times when cable networks didn’t call the shots for conference expansion and realignment. Revenue from TV contracts has dried up in recent years, leaving less of a hurdle if conference officials sit down to iron out a realignment plan.

The Sun Belt and Conference USA both draw about $500,000 per school from their multimedia deals and the two leagues seem a good fit for realignment.

What’s the value in playing Florida International or UTEP when there are multiple programs in the Sun Belt that would be much better regional rivals for a program like Southern Miss?

In the article it says league looked at cutting down the number of conference football games. I thought you had to play a minimum of eight games- am I mistaken?

What's to stop CUSA from being football only and splitting into two entities for all other sports once the basketball auto-bid is possible with the Eastern teams? Would that keep us getting our full CFP share while actually increasing the NCAA credit revenue? One team on each side (non-football) would have to be added to round things out, would that work?

Our year in the WAC there were only 7 teams so we had 6 OOC games. It was kinda nice actually getting that much flexibility with OOC.

The only actual news in this opinion article is this....

"Conference USA is discussing setting up more pod play to reduce travel expenses in sports like baseball, softball and basketball. Also, the Sun Herald has learned that the league is weighing the possibility of cutting down on league games so football programs can schedule more non-conference contests closer to home."

The rest of the article is just this hack's opinion of what he wants. There will be no mutual realignment. The hack has no league source speaking about any impending realignment. It is just his personal agenda. Fake news. 07-coffee3

I'm at the stage now on this subject of why postpone the inevitable? Let's put egos aside, get these done and move on.

Revenue from TV contracts hasn't dried up. Its gone up for every conference but cusa. Judy just sucks at any kind of negotiation and tried to convince everyone that tv money had dried up. Then other conferences have negotiated after us and gotten more.

Sports are one of the last thing people watch live TV for. Which means its one of the only things people still watch commercials for. All the money is in live sports right. Judy just took the TV execs at their word when they spouted that nonsense to get a cheaper deal.

Personally if this is gonna happy I think we should go to three conferences and not two

South West Conference:

NMSU
UTEP
UTSA
TXST
UNT
ULM (they’ll never be in the same conference as LaTech
Arkansas State
Missouri State
UTA* No football
UALR* no football

Gulf central:

LaTech
Louisiana
Rice
USM
USA
Troy
UAB
MTSU or FAU
WKU or FIU

Atlantic East:

WKU or FAU
MTSU or FIU
Georgia state
Georgia southern
Coastal
UNCC
App state
ODU
Liberty
Marshall

There are probably a few schools that will lose enough enrollment and cash to drop down from D1. We should all wait to see who can financially survive this before we break up. It would suck to break in to conferences of eight and then someone like ULM has to drop down and leave a conference scrambling.

Very true, but in my personal opinion a 3 conference alignment would be better then 2 if your trying to become more regional.

As the writer suggested, take rhe 24 teams and create 3 eight team conferences. Add indy NMSU to the western most league.

UTEP, NMSU, ULM, UTSA, UNT, Rice, Ark St, ULL, Texas St

LTU, USM, UAB, Troy, South Alabama, Georgia St, FIU, FAU

Coastal Carolina, Charlotte, App St, WKU, MTSU, Marshall, ODU, Georgia Southern

This allows LT and ULM to avoid each other but forces UTEP and NMSU to be in the same conference. They play most sports vs each other anyway. This also keeps App St and Georgia Southern together and the Florida pair as well. Also no fcs move ups needed.

It can't be 3 conferencs though since one would be without an autobid.

I'd rather see benchmarks set that must be met by each institution within a certain timeframe. Give everyone a chance to meet them. If they can't, their membership could then be evaluated, up to and including expulsion.

A compact, regional conference with new rivals may be all a school like ULM needs to be successful.

I don’t hate this conference my only thing is UTEP not UNT have baseball and it’s not secret that Louisiana, Rice, USM and USA major sport to each university is baseball that’s why I had them grouped together.

I assume cutting down on league games would mean dropping cross divisional play. I've said before but this season a move like that would save FIU a trip to UTEP and save UTEP a trip to Charlotte. Two of the longest trips in conference this year. Finding more regional opponents should not be difficult if other conferences want to save money this year as well.

Affiliates might be the answer for issues like that.

I still think that's on the table for Akron and several other MAC schools.
