RE: Flash Basketball 20-21
Too bad that we weren't told WHY Hamilton was granted immediate eligibility. The current basketball rule on redshirting (non-medical) is to qualify as a redshirt year a player can't play at all. But, as GFlash68 pointed out, the special rules in response to the COVID-19 pandemic may well be the explanation for Hamilton.

Whatever the 'rule' it's safe to say the outcome is a plus. Two years of JH eligibility instead of one gives Sendy something to work with. BTW, does this also mean a possible SIXTH year (next season) for DPippen?!?!?!?!

I still don't understand why he'd be listed as a Jr on the roster though. Eligibility aside, he's a 4th year player/student.

Anti-Zip, because this year won't count (COVID)??? Heck, I've been following basketball since 1954 and I still don't know why correct heights are listed on rosters!!

RE: Flash Basketball 20-21
Yeah but, Pippen, Nuga, and Beck are still listed as Srs. Normally they would still list the guy as a Sr like Nuga was if you go back and look at last year's roster. I guess ultimately it doesn't matter. What I was getting at though is trying to figure out if there was legitimately some reason he got a year of eligibility back which would entitle him to three years remaining (this free year, the one he got back, and his 4th year). As other's have mentioned on this thread though, basketball doesn't work like football so there shouldn't be an obvious way that would happen. I assume it's just "everyone was laid off so college kids are running the website and it's just a mistake".

Really miss the days of having actual reporting on Kent sports so we knew what's going on.

One thing I'll add, we probably can't be super confident that Beck, Nuga, Hamilton, or Pippen will be around past this year. They'll all have been in school for 4 or 5 years by the end of this year so it's likely some of them will graduate and have the option to grad transfer. Grad transfers could be crazy this spring. You could have guys that took normal redshirts earlier in their career eligible to grad transfer with 2 years left.

The NCAA is sending clear signals -ALL- players will be allowed to transfer after this season and be immediately eligible. It will be the wild wild west.

I suspect at least 1/2 of the above will move on to make a mark professionally in Europe. But using DP as an example, shy of a stellar 2020-2021 season, he would be hard pressed to find a quality P5 landing spot with his history of injuries. And while his 15 ppg is strong for Kent, there will be plenty on the market just like him, some w/ more than one year of eligibility.

Beck, Nuga, Hamilton don't even have a history of that level of production. Yes, they could transfer, but it would likely be a lateral move at best. I still say, if these guys look around, the grass might be even greener at KSU next year than this year.

Should be a real mess, Cleveland. But, I'm finally getting used to annual mass roster turnover at all D 1 programs. I tell you, if a school could get a good core of young players and keep them 4 years they would be tough to beat, like KSU in the late 90s and early 00s.

At a MAC coaches' press conference Thursday, Sendy said that Beck would miss the beginning of the season would an injury. (He wouldn't say what kind.) It sounded as if it would be more than a game or two.

cschierh, it's an annual tradition. When was the last time they started a season with everyone healthy?

Wow, so every returning big has been banged up in the preseason? If he didn't mention the other three I assume that means they're past their injuries.

RE: Flash Basketball 20-21
I just realized the Pippen information was in a Friday story by Allen Moff of the Record-Courier, not the press conference. Have to give credit to fellow reporters.

Senderoff said Pippen had practiced only three times but may be ready for the opener against Alcorn State the Saturday after Thanksgiving. That game is at the M.A.C.C.

He said Kalin Bennett (groin) and Evan Bainbridge (foot) had returned to practice earlier this month.

Moff also reported that based on schedules released by other schools, Kent State will also host Purdue Fort Wayne on Nov. 30, visit Virginia on Dec. 4 and host Northern Kentucky on Dec. 13.

COVID, of course, could change the schedule at any time.

The big question is if Bainbridge and Bennett have moved up from being practice players to game-day producers. If one or both are among the top 7-8, meaning in the rotation, then prospects for the season should be promising.

If not ....

RE: Flash Basketball 20-21
Sounds like Akron's team is in trouble. Pausing basketball activities until early December. Gotta figure that means multiple players have tested positive. It will be a big set back for them in terms of being able to prepare for MAC play with the already limited non conference schedule. It's possible that at some point every team goes through this though, so hey maybe they'll reach heard immunity in their locker room in November. It's going to be very interesting to see how this season goes.

Starkey said Wednesday that 190 women's teams had had their first games disrupted. I'm sure the men are similar.

Looks like they're trying to start the season tomorrow at 5 against a team named "Point Park". That school sounds like a Mockbuster of a Johnny Knoxville movie.
