RE: Flash Basketball 20-21
You're probably right about the diversity of sports building different muscles and helping to avoid injuries. My guess is part of basketball injuries are due to how players are always getting bigger, faster, and jumping higher as well. Thinking about an injury like Kevin Ware, that injury happened because he was able to get his body moving so fast and go such a long distance in the air that his leg physically couldn't withstand the pressure of landing and trying to stop the momentum. I really think that's one of the most impressive things about LeBron. Someone his size being able to move like that and jump as high as him is rare, almost unheard of when he broke into the league. Yet he's managed to avoid any serious injury his whole career.

Then again, not playing defense until the playoffs probably helps 03-wink

Since there's no "Former Flash Basketball 20-21" thread, I'll post this here. Roberts was granted a waiver to play immediately at St. Bonaventure. It'll be interesting to see what role he plays on a 19-12 A-10 team that returns all 5 starters. Also of note... Their top three scorers are guards between 6'3" and 6'5" that are also going to be juniors this year. Silver lining for him though... He keeps his redshirt year so he can transfer again!

Which I’m sure he’ll look into, because if I’m not mistaken he left KSU because Kent was boring, two weeks at St. Bonnie would make any sane person second guess that decision.

Nothing against the particular player, but I’m curious at how the NCAA arrived at the decision for immediate eligibility? It was a straight transfer out of player to another school with nothing forcing it that we know of, no illegalities or anything peculiar by the school that forced him out, he didn’t experience a hardship that required him to transfer closer to home, he was not a grad transfer, etc...I guess from here on out the NCAA should never nix a request for instant eligibility and if they did the player should be upset.

More and more these 'instant eligibility' rules come down to how the opposing coaches/ADs portray the exit. Miami (Sibande) and Western (Flowers) seems to have some bad blood upon departure. Their petitions were denied. Apparently KSU had no issues with AR leaving, and/or St. Bonnies getting him.

As an aside, KSU/St. Bonnie have had a working relationship of sorts over the years in basketball with scrimmages and such.

Hey - maybe we can set it up where we're something like a minor-league club for St Bonaventure

Or maybe we already have?

As transfer rules continue to loosen, eventually all but the Top 25 type programs will be essentially minor league teams.

93% approved this year, but the 7% not approved have been baffling. sibande was denied immediate eligibility at pitt even though his newborn son is living there and there were severe covid outbreaks on miami's campus, both reasons he gave in his request. almost everyone moving to big name schools has been approved, with far less rationale. toledo had a recent case where a D2 star from Walsh transferred up to the Rockets. He was a dean's list student and had full support of the Walsh people but the ncaa denied his request and his appeal. according to toledo folks they said they were rejected for being honest. for him saying he had no problems at walsh and no family related responsibilities in the toledo area but that toledo was a better place for him athletically and academically. 93% of other guys got approved, some who have transferred 2 or 3 times now, so, i guess somebody at north carolina pissed off the ncaa because they just took it out on toledo.

I am not sure anyone really knows what was in Sibande's request. I read an article where he referenced he was run off and the reason the transfer request was denied was because MU said that wasn't true. It's been a big story drawing national attention because the player and coaching staff and administration all publicly have differentiating stories.

Seems like an intriguing player. Looks to have good size and move well and certainly plays above the rim. Here's a short highlight video from his sophomore year. So this would fill out our scholarships that are set to open up for next year. Looks like a nice class. A highly regarded PG, a big Center with a back to the basket style game, and now an athletic Forward.

Watched a few more videos on Rollins. Seems like the type of recruit we don't often get. 6'6" with handles and foot speed so likely able to play on the wing. Usually when we bring in a 6'6"/6'7" HS recruit they're either a below the rim player or have to move to the 4. It seems like he has a valuable skillset in the era of small ball lineups.

Highlights/videos for all 3 Kent recruits offer hope for the future, HOWEVER, two areas of concern I believe for many of us are 1) can't seem to find many reliable scouting reports on strengths/weaknesses for these recruits and 2) based on 'known' recruiting options for all 3 players, KSU was probably 1-2 in terms of quality offers.

Re: No. 1 -- this is probably a big Covid-related issue and may be rectified as the HS season goes on. Re: No. 2 there's probably an element of 'Covid' to this as well, but it would be nice to see Kent recruit above its weight (based on offers) sometimes.

This is not a complaint, but an observation, because I do believe Kent does recruit above its weight quite often when it comes to JC recruiting. I also believe this is the level of HS player more likely to develop and stay for 3-4 years vs. jumping ship after one big season.

Thinking as I'm writing this, perhaps that is the key to a consistently winning program.

In the end, a 5-10 PG, 6-9 250-C and 6-6 SF, on paper, is a quality haul for any season, so congrats to Sendy, Sligh, Fouse and Sully for a job well done.

Great analysis on Rollins. Just want to add, same high school as one of
my all-time favorite KSU players .... Armon Gates , now an assistant
at Nebraska . Let’s hope this turns out the same or better!!

Need to see his shooting touch. He is not going to see easy inside game in college that he gets in high school.

While his body type is different, judging from a few of the video snippets his game reminds me some of Edwin from a couple of years back. A third rebounder who can rip and run which can make for a couple of easy baskets a game. His outside shot looks decent, but would love to know his percentages, particularly from the line. If he's 75-percent or better that would be spot on. Anything less and he's probably a work in progress.

RE: Flash Basketball 20-21
So roughly a month before the season can start. I'm wondering has anyone heard anything about what new guys/young guys are looking good? 6 of our top 7 in minutes from a year ago are gone and a lot of new faces. A lot of minutes up for grabs.

Should we expect Beck to be stepping into a 25+ mpg role? Is anyone standing out among the three juco perimeter guys? Any young guys looking like they're taking a step? Davis looking like he's ready for college ball?

Based strictly off what I've read ... Pippen is still recovering, Bainbridge is in a boot, KBennett also recovering from surgery and Temple recruit is a redshirt.

That means the tallest/biggest healthy player on the team is the juco, and at 6-6 he's an undersized post man. Who knows what all the perimeter players look like. Even if Beck is one of the top 3 players on the team that still leaves a lot of ground to make up.

Haven't heard a peep about VCDavis which is not a good sign, either.

Truth is this is what happens with so many unknowns, combined with Covid, and so little chance to put an eye on practices or open gyms during the summer. With so little tangible evidence of what the overall talent level truly is, we're left to our imaginations. For better or worse.

Per the Beacon Journal, the Golden Flashes will be opening the MAC schedule with Zips on December 19, which was moved from March. Still waiting for the non-conference portion of the schedule to be finalized.
