It's becoming dangerous to play NMSU at a neutral site. Now, P5 schools only want play NMSU if they come to their arena or not play NMSU at all. So, quality opponents is becoming slim pickings for NMSU. And, Jans is not just going to play any P5 school without serious compensation or a return game in Las Cruces. So far, NMSU managed to get a neutral site game (in Las Vegas) with Santa Clara of the WCC.

Since the WAC reorganized into its current iteration, and NMSU started on its current run you can look over the years and see non-conference scheduling becoming more difficult for the Aggies to schedule. The AD and head coach do manage to get a decent schedule together. I would love to see a game or two in Georgia (I live there).

Wow, we don't play anyone. What a bunch of cupcake schedules. I don't know why our AD can't schedule every OOC game against a P5 school...07-coffee3

If P5’s don’t want to play us at least schedule us some upper tier teams from the AAC, MW and WCC. Hell throw in the top team from the CUSA and SBC so we can put them in their place. We need these type of teams so we can bring up the WAC value as a whole.

If you noticed, Chris Jans beefed up the neutral site games on the Aggie schedule simply to be able to play quality opponents in a winnable setting. And, it has paid off with a number of wins. Prior to Jans, both Paul Weir and Menzies accepted traveling to tough places; almost always taking a double digit loss. Although in Weir's one year at NMSU, our Aggies upset Arizona State on their own court. Prior to that, the big knock on Marvin Menzies was he was not a good enough coach to pull off an upset over a quality opponent where the environment was stacked against him. Menzies needed to have equal or superior talent to win games. Which was always the case during his tenure in the WAC. NMSU was simply more talented than the rest of the WAC. Menzies was an excellent recruiter but only a slightly above average courtside tactician. That's the big difference between Chris Jans and any other Aggie coach not named Lou Henson or Neil McCarthy. NMSU has always had very good talent but Jans has finally put traction in NMSU's on-court performance.

That was a fun game to be at. Even though my buddy and I are ASU alumni (undergrad), we had a blast seeing Aggies take that win. On a related note, the "Curtain of Distraction" really isn't all that impressive when you see it live. Looks good on TV, but pretty underwhelming in person.

A neutral site game, in most cases, is a farce. Playing Kansas in KC, Illinois in Chicago and Mississippi State in Jackson are not really neutral. There is very little difference playing in those cities/venue than playing on the opponents' home court. It doesn't make the game more "winnable".

The other games mentioned were in tournaments. Jans didn't intentionally schedule those games on a neutral court. They were neutral courts for all participants.

Of course these P5 games would be played near the host team; it's just not in their home arena where everything is familiar to them leading up to the game. NMSU doesn't gain any real advantage but it takes the host team a little out of their comfort zone... some travel, unfamiliar court, etc. If it wasn't that big a deal, Jans wouldn't schedule these semi neutral site games; and yet he does. As for the tournaments, I'm not saying he scheduled the specific game at neutral sites tournaments but the he does schedule the tournament because it allows NMSU to play quality opponents on a neutral site. Unless NMSU wants to travel to a P5's venue, a holiday tournament is just about the only way a mid-major like NMSU can meet a P5 school on a more level playing field.

I do not buy that. I think the location is a problem and always has been. Las Cruces is not really close to anything, except El Paso. UNLV has home games with Cal and UCLA in basketball this season. They played Kansas State at home last season. Las Vegas is a destination city with a lot of basketball talent. Las Cruces is a college town without a lot of high school basketball talent. It is always going to be difficult to get quality schools to come to Las Cruces. Unfortunately, NMSU has to go on the road to find quality opponents. What NMSU basketball needs is for the other WAC schools to raise their level of play. They also need UTEP and UNM to rise their level of play. That could and should be four quality OOC games on the schedule.

RE: Games to Watch: WAC 2020-21 Non-Conference Scheduling
A little random, but do other WAC members notice an OOC scheduling overlap with other nearby schools? For example, do Seattle U and UW regularly end up with common OOC opponents? NMSU & UTEP? UVU & BYU?

I only ask because it seems like ASU & GCU inevitably end up both playing the same SWAC and MEAC buy games around the same time every season. I assume for the sake of convenience & travel savings. GCU benefitted from Illinois swinging through AZ last year, playing the Lopes first then heading down to Tucson for a matchup against UA.

NMSU and UTEP used to have some agreement. Schools would work together to play both on the same trip. It led to "larger" coming. I remember Washington coming to LC and El Paso.

GCU set to play San Francisco on Sat, Dec 19th as part of the Jerry Colangelo Classic quadruple-header. This will put WAC FOY Jovan Blacksher heads-up against former GCU PG Damari Milstead.

Other matchups in the event include:

Gonzaga v. Texas Tech
Arizona State v. BYU
NAU v. San Diego

Interesting that no UofA. It would have been really cool to see all 4 DI schools in the state there. Gonzaga vs UA would have been a good game as well.

That would be awesome for basketball in the state of Arizona. UA has played in the Colangelo Classic before, so I am hopeful that maybe they had a contracted game that kept them from being in it this year. Anything to keep myself believing that maybe it's something that will come together in the near future.

That is an impressive slate of teams for that tourney.

And I agree, it would really help if we could makes some noise, as a conference, by winning some of these games. But I know one thing for sure: you've gotta schedule it before you can win it. Maybe Tarleton will be the ones to lead the way on this for the WAC. Perhaps BCG is thinking in order to be the best, you have to play the best. Even if they get throttled, his young players will be better off for it when conference play rolls around. NMSU and their big ol' arena won't look so tough after facing A&M and UCLA on the road. Can't hurt for recruiting purposes, either. I like it.

With all due respects we have beat a P5 school every year the past 4 years. #6 ranked ACC Miami, Illinois on the road, Washington State twice of the PAC, Arizona State of the PAC on the road and Mississippi State of the SEC on the Road. All wins. Our losses were in the final possession vs. ranked USC and #2 Kansas on the road so NMSU and are big ol arena would be just fine and still very scary, especially for WAC teams. I'm confident we would throttle A&M and have a very good chance vs UCLA. Of course they will schedule Tarleton. They figure an easy win. NMSU trys to schedule upper echelon teams but they don't want to play us.

Jans did say he's having a hard time scheduling decent teams.

Reminds me of Illinois State a couple years ago when no one wanted to play them. A strong MVC team, they were over performing and the big boys steered clear.

It’s hard to blame P5 Conference schools for avoiding mid major trap games. If they win, people expected it and it’s not a big deal. If they lose, it hurts their ranking and tourney resumes. It’s basically a no win scenario.

Like I doubt we will ever see an ASU vs GCU Crosstown shootout.

You might be surprised, and possibly sooner rather than later... 07-coffee3

Hey, now we're talkin'! GCU (Bryce Drew) hosting a very nice Invitational at Talking Stick, and managed to do the unthinkable in getting a H&H with ASU. I like it.
