I voted they will be canceled. When Rudy Gobert tested positive, everything rolled downhill like an avalanche and all leagues were suspended within 24 hours.

I anticipate something similar will happen here. Once some sort of trigger occurs, everything rolls down hill at rocket speed cancelling everything.

RE: Will NIU have fall sports this year?
Interesting thread question that causes me to think about the MAC announcement of a 20-game bball season. Aren't the o-o-c games all played in wbb and mbb at the very beginning of the season? So if those were cut, due to no fall semester sports, it would be a pure MAC schedule that started with the spring semester 2021. Just a thought that flew by.

NIU basketball already played without fans. And for big games, they could social distance. So, not really a big deal.

If fall sports cancelled and the reasoning being that classes are cancelled or we just do it on zoom, then NIU FB is dead as we know it. Play Wheaton, Cartrage and Augustana when you come back. NIU has to announce they are going full speed ahead or get ready for 25%+ drop in enrollment. Get a contingency schedule to play Southern teams if you feel the MAC brethern are not going to go ahead. NIU's future is on the line if they play mamby pamby.

RE: Will NIU have fall sports this year?
As I said, just a passing thought. If there is no FB, I doubt the 2020 portion of the BB schedule will be played. And I was thinking more of the road BB games than home. Dependent on what other schools do. The 20-game MAC schedule starting in January would at least salvage some kind of season. The spring 2021 MAC tournament could still be played. Again, just a thought. And imo many posters are looking/hoping for something to work.

NIU can not make a statement till Pritzker acts. The longer it goes the more new students will go elsewhere. Kind of like Chicago State, when will NIU run out of money.

RE: Will NIU have fall sports this year?
Imo our illustrious billionaire governor might be blamed for a lot of things, but nobody knows what's going to happen with fall sports. It's all interstate and inter-connected. Illinois by itself will decide very little on that subject.

As for students, a lot will be determined when fall enrollment is better-known. I agree more students will go elsewhere, maybe to jc or community college, stay online or simply stay home and ride out a year. Save the money.

You mentioned money ... according to figures I've seen in one study, student fees put $9.1 million into athletics' $26.5 million budget. So that's a very, very critical situation. Just like those payday road football games.

Imo, some officials at P5 schools are crying about cuts. But for the G5, FCS, Division II, Division III, NAIA, 2020-21 will be a survival year. The question is ... what will it look like at the end of spring 2021?

We do not have an effective leadership at NIU. At first its easy to blame this whole virus hysteria, but then again, I think the virus situation probably just accelerated what was already happening anyway. NIU was going under even without the virus problem, it just maybe happened 5 years sooner than it would have without it

Even before the pandemic, this would have been my advice to any kid looking at college (except for the stay home a year). It's just too darn expensive nowadays (everywhere) to commit to 4 or 5 (or in some cases....6.....ahem....what?) years of astronomical student debt when there are other avenues...less expensive avenues...to the same destination.

With so many rednecks crying "hoax" and begging to open up too early (it's already started), we'll most likely get our second wave of mass infections sooner than later and it will be obvious in August that there's no way we can have large social gatherings without hospitalizing more people than our health care facilities can process.

SEC will probably vote to sacrifice their trained seals, but I can't see any other conference having football this fall. I doubt we'll have in-person classes.

If what you say is true (I don't have more than personal knowledge to say myself), then the focus is on what it will look like come spring 2021, and where does NIU go from there? I doubt NIU will simply axe all sports and have nothing in the future.

The last school in Illinois to do that was Northeastern Illinois, and today club sports etc. have emerged for the more sports-inclined students. I would not label NEI "prophetic," btw.

As for NIU, it and the MAC have made some really dumb mistakes by doing what they thought was best at the time for image and bottom line. Imo they jumped too soon on the TV bandwagon with a contract that runs through 2027, without considering the impacts on their foundation/fan base, which is one of the main reasons Huskies athletics survived and grew at all. Strictly looking at fan base, they handed nothing down to the next generation, so no next generation evolved.

It didn't help that the ESPN-MAC contract is between two private parties, so despite being 12 public universities, the fan base has no access to details. No one likes a secret deal that impacts their favorites and has a trickle-down effect on their involvement. No one likes being told that the Saturday tradition of college football is being tossed in the can, so pack up your tailgate stuff and just keep those donations and ticket purchases coming, folks. And absolutely no one I know likes being told to like it or lump it.

So again, what do you think it will all look like come spring 2021?

Well stated pvk75.
If we cancel football in the fall, it will get real complicated. When does basketball start? What about transfers? Why pay coaches with no season? How does eligibility work? The cost of another year for scholarships? TV contracts? Will the MAC survive? Do we need athletic fees with no programs in the spring of 2020 and the fall of 2020? Athletic fees cover around 1/3 of the athletic budget, with no fees how much do you cut? What will be left to NIU in the spring of 2021? Let us talk about class action lawsuits and students getting sick in the fall? The list goes on and on.

And still, you won't answer the question.

And who said anything about not wanting to go back to work? Everyone wants to open and go back to school, church, work, etc. However, grownups don't want to kill doctor, nurses and their families so they can go bowling or get their nails done.

You don't get to work just because you want to. Answer the question - do you agree that you and your ilk can do whatever you want, as long as you do not ask for government support -- that you have to self-treat?

We ARE balancing things. We're keeping grocery stores open because people need to buy food. Grocery store workers are dying across the country so you can buy food. They are also having their arms broken or being shot because your buddies don't want to wear masks in PRIVATE businesses. Keeping grocery stores and pharmacies and doctor's offices and car repair places is necessary. However, killing more people because, "The girls at my hair salon need to work and feed their families" doesn't cut it in this situation. Instead of giving bailout/stimulus money to large corporations, we can instead help the girls working in the hair salons.

If I were starving, I wouldn't infect and kill teenage cashiers at grocery stores or mothers working at ICUs so I could go back to work at an Arby's or nail salon.

Who's the heartless, selfish, immoral (and profoundly dimwitted) prick?

If NIU cancels football this year it's over. We are done as a D1 football team. They have to make contingency plans and play. The SEC and others will be looking to fill their schedule out from those non conference teams that ran away. Have to play!

Fall sports will be a game time decision. The information I would like to know is enrollment numbers. How many new students enrolling, how many returning. These impact dollars. Also impacting dollars is our OOC games, they are money makers. If games cancelled, party might be over

75% of the deaths are in nursing homes and NY,CT & NJ. That is not an opinion. You cannot make people who live a 1,000 miles away to live by same standards. People can't get testing for cancers because it's an "elective" procedure. How many die because of that? Country does not survive if we continue the shutdown. Our very existence is at stake here. No one can outlaw death and disease.

Most contracts have act of God clauses. Pandemic would fall under that.
