Exclamation *** Football News Thread ***
Didn’t feel like going and digging around for the old thread.

UCF schedules a buy game with Liberty in 2024, this is the second buy game we’ve scheduled with FBS teams. The first was with UConn, scheduled for 2021.

RE: Football News Thread
I supported it at first, but I'm finally coming along that the 1-1 ideology is a pipe dream. I'm tired of our hardest game every year being Memphis/Pitt. Danny White needs to give the ticket holders something to get excited about. If he's so worried about the 6 home games, have an FCS team give us a free home game to compensate, and get a 2-1 with Texas/Michigan/etc. I would much rather lose by 5 to Ohio State, and maybe win one of those games one day, then beat Pitt and Louisville by 20.

People need to understand we hold absolutely no cards when it comes to scheduling and accept the fact that if we want to play better competition it's going to come at a cost of 2-1's. Otherwise, enjoy all the 1-1's you can get against UConn, Texas State, and Georgia State.

I’m fine with this if it replaces our FCS game for that year. If it replaces FIU/FAU or a P6 game, than I’m not.

SMU LB Richard Moore has been granted a sixth year of eligibility:

This was my pick for the AAC DPOY last year before his injury, so this is big for us.

Its not binary. Refusing 2-for-1's doesnt mean you are stuck playing Georgia St and Texas St.

Frankly, most of the really big names wont even leave their building for a G5 regardless of how many home games you give them in exchange. Bama, Ohio St---those kind of programs arent ever coming to a G5 stadium. Not to mention---in every 2-for-one deal---you're having to pay the piper with a garbage FCS buy game to balance the schedule. So--local G5 fans get shafted with either scheduling strategy. Im fine with the 2 mid-level P5's and two G5's OOC annual scheduling strategy Houston uses---but at this point---Im not going to freak out if another AAC member opts for a 2-for-1 to get a bigger name home game. Different strokes.

I agree with all of that. The point I'm making is that there are those who are upset that, for example, SMU got a 2-1 against Vanderbilt because it isn't a 1-1. People are going to have to be more cognizant of the challenges we face with scheduling teams.

Im not freaking out over it---but I dont think thats probably worth it. I dont like the idea of doing 2-for-1's with lower tier P5's. A 2-for-1 with nearby Texas or even Oklahoma St would have been more reasonable IMHO. I think you land lower tier P5's without going 2-for-1 if you are patient. I just think---If you are going to do a 2-for-1, I just think you should at least end up with at a mid-to-upper tier P5.

SMU should see itself as being above the Vanderbilts of college football. 2 for 1 with Texas, Texas A&M, USC, Alabama, Ohio State, Florida State, etc. ok. 2 for 1 with Kansas, Indiana, Illinois, Washington State, etc. not cool.

Great, and in the meantime?

Ever since the end of the SWC we have been able to land 2-1's from A&M, Okie State, TT, Wazzou, and Baylor a couple of times, and that makes up about 12% of the OOC games over the past 25 years. Keep in mind, Baylor and Wazzou are similar to Vandy - bottom ringers with a couple good years under a coach or two; Vandy had Johnson and Franklin, Baylor had Briles and a single good year under Rhule, and Wazzou had Leach for mediocrity, so I absolutely consider them in the same league as Vanderbilt - Wazzou absolutely STUNK during the years we played them.

Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas haven't touched us since the SWC, and they shouldn't, they have nothing to gain by playing us. UT and OU play in Dallas every year and Arky - well, we whipped the pigs 3 out of the last 4 times we played them in the mid-90's and we haven't seen them since.

So how long are we supposed to wait, 'cause it's been a quarter century.

Quote:SMU should see itself as being above the Vanderbilts of college football.

Okay, if you say so. Just make sure you tell Vandy, Kansas, etc. that when you attempt to get them on the phone - love to see how that negotiation goes.

"Hey, Northwestern? Yeah, this is SMU - we want to play you; we have similar open dates."

"Okay, sure, what were you thinking?"

"Well, we want a 1-and-1 and..."

*click*

"Hello??? Northwestern???"

That is exactly how that conversation is going to go.

For the record, the Vandy AD who scheduled this has since been fired for incompetence, albeit for unrelated matters, and Mason is on his way out, too. This is a horrible deal for them, they had no business signing it when they have a slew of G5 opponents like UNLV, MTSU, Colorado State, etc. who will happily take the one game option in Nashville for the payday - they F'd up.

Look, you can tell yourself that we are better than Alabama and Clemson if you want, but that doesn't change the fact that we have NO CARDS in these negotiations, and I won't even begin to discuss the coaching influence on scheduling - UH has been playing with a different stack of cards than SMU for a long time and the UH coaches could schedule a game with at least an outside shot of winning it. We scheduled A&M knowing damn well we were going to get our teeth kicked in, and that included bowl years.

This is my thoughts as well. Replacing the FCS game with an FBS buy game like Liberty or UConn is an improvement to strength of schedule and Liberty in particular has been trending upwards.

Great. I also see 2-1's versus bottom feeders like Ole Miss and Wake Forest. If you were able to get a 1-1 then by all means do it, but I see alot more than run in their favor, so I stand by my point.

If you want to criticize SMU's schedule, go after the PILE of FCS schools on the future schedule, with no 2-1 with major powers offsetting them - that's just laziness on the coaches who scheduled them *cough* Chad Morris *cough*

Arrogant UTK AD recently said he'd consider a game in Memphis but it wouldn't be against Memphis - the arrogant jerk! He still delusionally thinks he's got a natl contender in Knoxville & rules the state. Instead he doesn't even have the best program in TN. I hope they 0-12 & get the death penalty from the NCAA.

I'm not surprised. The only reason Tennessee ever plays Memphis in football is out of politics and that's it.

I could tell many of you lads so many things about UofTenn athletics officials and fans as it relates to the "city of Memphis" that would make you want to vomit.

I always try to be respectful and give everybody the benefit of the doubt. I have cousins on my father's side who attended UT and are big Vol fans. That's cool. I'm happy for them and I always wish the Vols well for my relatives. And I'll be the first to admit that there are many unlikable Memphis Tiger fans (some on this board, no less). So, yes, I "get it."

But don't get me started about UT coaches, fans, athletics administrators who want to to gain a foothold in Memphis for recruiting and visibility while simultaneously trashing the city in which I was born and in which my parent met and fell in love. It's so hypocritical. I'll leave it at that.

I give UTK credit for mastering how to schedule the Tigers when they are down. The last 20yrs we played them 6 times and the Tigers season record those yrs was something like 14-44....Bastards.

I think a silver lining to playing Vandy twice on the road is it gives you 2 chances at a "P5" road scalp, which is always a decent boost to the schedule, regardless of how garbage the opponent is. Throw in a win over TCU each year and you've got the makings of an OOC that will match or top any G4 schedule, automatically putting you in NY6 conversation at the start of conference play... Which is where you'll meet your only real competition for the access bowl anyways 04-cheers
