RE: Changes resulting from Pandemic
The Dave Mullins philosophy of college athletics was always severely flawed but Covid is showing it to be totally unsustainable. It will be a big surprise if we don’t end up cutting some programs.

Will the NCAA be forced to allow more flexibility in the number of men’s and women’s sports that it requires? Am sure some ETSU coaches, along with many of their counterparts , are on pins and needles. This is not good. The unemployment rate across the economy is NOT GOOD. What a tragedy for so many people from this epidemic — something that should not have happened in the first quarter of the 21st century!

They can't possibly tell us that cutting indoor track saves any amount of money. A blip on the radar within the budget. Tennis? Another blip. Soccer? A minor bump but nothing much. I personally think this is a dream scenario for many college presidents. Most are anti-athletics and this is the perfect cover to start wiping out athletic programs. Academic types that want to funnel money to an art program instead of football. They can't eliminate big sports overnight like football or basketball, but they can chip away at the smaller sports and overall scholarship numbers (see Furman). What Furman did was outrageous and just might cripple them out of Division 1 in the long run. Taking out baseball was a big flex from the academic side of Furman. Especially when they said in the Q&A that no donor would be allowed to save it. They want it dead.

Exact same scenario played out at ETSU back in 2003 with football. They didn’t want to entertain anyone saving it either. There are a lot of hidden agendas in some of these moves. ETSU is way better off now than we were in 2003 though.

Just making progress toward Title IX compliance and blaming it on COVID-19. Never let a crisis go to waste.

Which I would suggest is not a terrible idea. It should be understood that these cuts are going to disproportionately affect men's sports because cutting men's sports are cheaper than adding women's sports.

We’ve been there, seen that, done that without a pandemic. It BACKFIRED then as NOBODY followed us by adopting the Stanton/Mullins model. So, now proceed with great caution and planning. Of course no one knows the final outcome of this crazy thing, but being back in the nice geographical footprint of the SoCon is a good place to be now.

I was a big follower of that saga just from being an ASUN fan when you joined (and student at the time!). What a great victory to return to the SoCon and bring back football. The current group of ASUN posters on this board seem to think that ETSU, UTC, and WCU might leave for the new ASUN football conference they are dreaming of.

It’s an interesting thought. If a couple of OVC teams like
Jax State came too it would be enticing to join other like minded public schools.

Yea — given certain economic conditions aligning, much of the “outgrown this place/time to move up” mentality could evaporate and realignments take place based on the bottom line$$$$.

ETSU
UTC
WCU
Kennesaw State
North Alabama
Jacksonville State
Tennessee Tech
Need at least two more football teams to get to 9 and three more schools total to get to 10 for hoops, but I'd be down for that even though it's probably slightly longer travel.

No need to get into turmoil about this. ETSU isn't going to go to a conference that increases travel cost for all of its sports. ETSU isn't going to gut their athletics to support a single sport (football) ala App State.
And finally to want to be in a basketball conference with 1-28 Kennesaw NET ranking next to last is not understandable to me at all.

ETSU won’t stay in the socon without Chattanooga and Western. Chattanooga does not want to stay in the socon. They want to be in a conference with JSU and JSU doesn’t want to be in the OVC. If you don’t think this has some legs you haven’t been paying attention.

You think ETSU would stay in the Socon without Chatt and/or Western? I think people on here get caught up in the name of the conference. This isnt the socon we left.
That list above has exactly 1 team from the old Asun days? KSU.

A SoCon school cutting baseball. Wow.
I briefly got to listen to the Furman baseball coach on ESPNU radio today and I got the feeling the funding may be found to bring back the baseball program. Good to hear.

Chattanooga and Western Carolina will drag ETSU back into the ASUN? Absolutely, sure bet — can’t wait.
You think ETSU would stay in the Socon without Chatt and/or Western? I think people on here get caught up in the name of the conference. This isnt the socon we left.
That list above has exactly 1 team from the old Asun days? KSU.
It's an interesting thought. That UTC and Western could control ETSU's destiny. I think I agree with your statement, it's just hard to imagine. ETSU getting forced to join a league that was created by the ASUN. What a world that would be. I like the uniqueness of the SoCon's balance. 4 public , 4 private, 2 military. I could understand if ETSU wanted a fully public league, but I would think they would join any other league in the universe before one controlled by the very league they ran away from. It's 2020 though, crazy times!
