MAC Makes Big Changes
The Mid-American Conference confirmed Tuesday evening that it will make drastic cost-cutting changes to its postseason formats beginning next year, including to both men's and women's basketball, due to the economic fallout of the coronavirus pandemic.

RE: MAC Makes Big Changes
Financial costs from virus leading to state funding cuts and enrollment drops resulting in college budget cuts in FY21 create their first impact to Athletics at UT and in the MAC.

And unfortunately for colleges and their staff, including Athletics, more cuts are coming for FY21

I get it Paul J...

Those were just macro league reductions not institution reductions.

Yep, but driven by discussions with all MAC schools that helps each save money, was just pointing out other cost cut are still to come at UT and each school

The University Akron is dropping men’s golf and cross country and women’s tennis in cost-cutting moves due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Dropping x-country will be a huge saving. Seven singlets, shorts, some shoes and a Happy meal after away meets. It all adds up.

BLADE - The Mid-American Conference will end the practice of home teams staying in hotels the night before football games, according to league sources.

The MAC also will reduce the size of travel rosters as the league continues to cut costs with its 12 universities facing financial hardship in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

If these aren't enough, the only other thing the Conference and it's schools can do now is cut sports/scholarships. The FBS/FCS borderline is objectively pretty damn close now.

MAC schools as a whole could probably maintain FBS status by scaling back football to 75-80 scholarships and fill in the roster void with more preferred walk-ons, and some kids could qualify on the academic side...
Men’s and women’s basketball could possibly get by on 10-11 scholarship players and walk-ons... We know that TK could, since he only utilizes 7-8 in his rotation anyway ... lol !!!
Toledo is, you would think, in a better shape financially than most of the MAC since we are not presently engaging in major facility upgrades like CMU or EMU have going on... The bonds/debt on the GB renovation has been retired long ago, though I am pretty sure that is not the case for Savage Arena...
Ohio/NIU/Miami have recently opened up new state of the art IPF’s and of course Akron will take forever to retire the debt on Infocision Stadium...
Some MAC programs have deeper pockets/donors than others, also without incurring a lot of future debt on facility upgrades...

I agree that that's a middle ground, but the University would still have to stay above 200 GIA's to stay above the D1 threshold, and there cannot be any partial scholarships granted to football players at the FBS level so it would have to be an all-or-nothing type situation (70 would scholarships, the remaining roster wouldn't).

That's all without even addressing the problem that dropping that many scholarships would essentially kill the talent pool in the MAC basically turn it into an FCS level of competition in an FBS division (which just seems pointless IMO).
