What has happened to Indiana basketball?
...and is Memphis in danger of the same thing? Becoming mired in endless mediocrity? Never really horrible but rarely if ever great?
Its been a decade + since X walked out of the building. We have 2 NCAA wins since then and not even a sniff of the big dance in 6 years and counting.
If Penny can't get it done it'll probably take a 'savior hire' like Cal to fix the program.
As someone once said, you are what your record says you are.....
I look back at the last 2-3 years of Pastner and all the missteps the program has made since then.
Hopefully the orgasmic spike that was the Wiseman class won't turn our to be just that and nothing more.

Mike Crean and Archie Miller should have done great at Indiana. I still don't understand how Mike Anderson didn't (thank God) turn Arkansuck into a national program. Winning IS hard, and as I always said, what Pastner did his first 4 years here was a very good accomplishment. If everything doesn't go wrong in year 5 we are at least a Sweet 16 team.

It took the savior 3 full years to get to the tournament and 4 years to win a game there, and that is with a team his second season that had Wagner, Wise, Massie, Scooter, Rice and Grice on it.
It took Pearl 4 years to make the tournament at Auburn and that is with full on cheating, with players being paid tens and hundreds of thousands of dollars.
There are rarely shortcuts, it really is hard.

What happened in Indiana is the same thing that happened at Cincy. It takes 4 groups to make a great program; Admin, Players, Coaches and Fans. And they each have to do their job. If one of these gets out of sync you can be good, but not great. At Indiana and Cincy; what the fans, coaches and players wanted- the admin wouldn't support.
In some places the coaches miss the boat (I think that describes us with Tubby). I think our mediocrity at the end of the Finch era can be blamed on our fan base; we literally allowed others to talk us down from greatness... cause we where pretty good but if you read what was written about us back then you'd think we had 5 losing seasons...???
We got the coach, we got the admin, we have pretty good fans, with those 3 the players will come. Let's roll.

Pretty good explanation.
The years are rolling by. Hope Penny is THE one.

Basketball is much easier to fix than football...
Just takes the right coach who can get players.
I think Memphis can win with Memphis talent along with one or two guys from outside the city with the right coach. So landing talent shouldn't be the biggest issue.

Indeed. In fact, landing 4-star talent might be more important than ever before.

RE: What has happened to Indiana basketball?
Penny had a recruiting "prize" in Jalen Green all but signed, but lost him to the G-league, not to another school. The G-League has added a nuance to recruiting that everyone will have to adjust to. I'm sure that Penny will adjust as well.
I do think we have the right coaching staff in place. Penny & staff can recruit, and can coach & develop players. We won a lot of games despite losing our best player (and the player the entire offense was built around) after 3 games, and losing key players for long stretches of the season.
What I hope is that what happened to Finch doesn't ultimately happen to Penny. The poster is right - Finch's demise was partly the fan's fault. The fans lost faith in Finch when he didn't sign Tony Harris, Robert O'Kelly or Corey Bradford.

Penny will get it done, barring any major penalties.

Indiana alums (and Purdue) point to recruiting instate. Indiana hadn't signed Mr. Basketball in Indiana (e.g. Kyle Guy) but a couple times in almost a decade before this most recent (I believe) signed with Miller.
Feeling is Indiana BBall has become old news - reflected by their troubles in getting instate Mr. BBalls.
2008 champ game was shown on CBS in March - an ESPN personality in another sport (family friend) texted me that he forgot the game went into OT. It gets forgotten fast if you don't get 2nd weekend in 10 years.
BBall trivia Q. to a New Yorker college BBall fan - Ewing got to 3 Nat champ games in 4 years. What consensus AA (with 4 S16s) stopped him the one time with 28 pts 15 rbs.
Wins a drink every time - People forget. Relevant or Old news

I still have full faith in Penny and the staff. I think he has done a fine job thus far, under some really strange, mind-boggling circumstances. No one could have seen the continual gut-punches of last year. Yet they still soldiered on. Coaches are now in a different era of recruiting, but he gets that. He gets IT, period.

Penny is doing this for his love of this city and this program. He doesn't need this job.

This is what scares me. It is the NCAA no matter what they call their committee -IARP or whatever it is.
As for IU, maybe they shouldn't have treated one of the 3 or 4 greatest coaches of all time like they did. Knight is a legend.

I'm a HUGE Knight fan, but he got too big for his britches. 2 way street.
