Semi-OT: MAC to eliminate eight conference tournaments for at least next four years
https://www.cleveland.com/sports/college...eport.html

Quote:MAC commissioner Jon Steinbrecher told WTOL-TV’s Jordan Strack that as a result of financial difficulties brought on by the coronavirus pandemic, the conference is eliminating for at least the next four years postseason tournaments in baseball, softball, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s lacrosse and field hockey.

In addition, the men’s and women’s MAC seasons will look different. The conference is eliminating divisions and the teams will play 20 conference games as opposed to 18. For the postseason, there will be no first-round home games, and the top eight teams from the regular season will advance to Cleveland to take part in the tournament.

Could CUSA follow suit? They have a much bigger footprint than the MAC and more cost savings to be realized from not having conference tournaments.

Also the move to 20-game hoops seasons adds fuel to that trend. Does CUSA consider it as OOC opportunities shrink?

It could work in CUSA. 12 divisional games and 8 against the other division, with a h/a against one crossover opponent.

Maybe clt is too young to remember that once upon a time, there were few if any conference tournaments. Winner of the regular season was the champion and received the ncaa bid. The regular season meant a lot more in those olden days.

Yep. Conference tournaments were seen as another money making venture for the conference. You also generally played everyone in the conference.

Being regular season champions will actually mean something (mean a lot!) again- as it should. It worked great before and it'll certainly work great again! No more "Gosh your 24-6 regular season champion team just missed the cut. Maybe next year" BS.

Worth noting here that they're not doing away with the basketball tournament, though they ARE cutting it to eight teams per.

You also played a round robin where you got each team home and home, with 14 CUSA schools that cant happen. So the conference winner could be based on which school got lucky enough to play the easier road schedule. Playing in the West is an advantage if we played divisions with home and home then 6 cross division games.

So everything is not equal during the season...if they decide to do this in basketball. If it ever happened in BB there should be a championship game like FB.

These changes would last FOUR years? Seems too long to make that decision in stone. Hope C-USA keeps things more flexible with one or two year period then re-evaluate. Also twenty BBALL conf. games would not save money because we are much bigger geographically than the MAC.

CUSA should discontinue it's basketball tournament. Crown the regular season champ

I agree with this for the Sun Belt as well as all mid and low majors. Conference tournaments at those levels are a money loser. The best way to make money for the conference in basketball is to earn NCAA tournament credits. The best chance for that to happen is to send the best team in the league to the tournament, as proven across an 18 to 20 game league season as opposed to a five day tournament where some 5 seed, 15-14 team goes on a hot streak. The regular season champion has a better chance at an 11 or 12 seed in the Big Dance, while the 5 seed conference tournament champ is going to get a 14 or 15 seed. Much better chance for an 11 or 12 seed to upset a 5 or 6 seed than a 14 or 15 seed to upset a 3 or a 2.

It's totally different for the power conferences where the regular season champ is getting in regardless, but for one bid leagues, just put your best foot forward and send them out to maximize success.

I suspect that the conference BBall tournament is making money. I also suspect that many of the other sports with conference tournaments do not so crowning a regular season champion may make financial sense.

Once you get away from round robin play, it only seems fair to have a conference tournament.

I suspect this as well because of the bid requirement. Otherwise the tournament would have been dropped before now.

Since 14 conference games is the minimum allowed, playing everyone once and travel partner twice would meet that minimum and keep schedules as balanced as possible if no tournament is to be played. Once you get to 16 games or more, the schedule isn't balanced enough to not have a tournament.

If play is mainly divisional leading into an 8-team tournament, maybe the top 3 teams from each division should qualify with the next two best conference records rounding out the field.

Speaking of the MAC.

BGSU just cut baseball and earlier this week Akron cut 3 sports (men's cross country, men's golf and women's tennis).

You could just play a home and home with division mates (12 games) and the two division winners play a best of seven series (or best of five or whatever).

Not allowed.

Applicable NCAA Division I multi-sport conference requirement:
"Basketball teams shall participate in a regular-season conference schedule of a double round robin, in-season competition, or a minimum of 14 regular-season conference contests...."
