Way to early for them to make the call. I guess Fresno won't be playing this year.

The likelihood of a single CSU student dying from this virus is lower than the likelihood of a CSU getting killed walking home from school which happens a lot especially with so many drunks near college campuses. Very, very few 18-22 year olds have died from this virus. If people are that concerned over students alcahol and in session schools would be permanently banned.

The decision affects three MWC and no PAC 12 schools (Cal and UCLA are UC, not CSU). It does take a sizable chunk out of the Big West, and if the UC schools follow suit, basically kill it for fall and winter this season.

i'm sure you realize that healthy, under 60, have a very very small chance of anything serious happening. it's a sickness like the flu. sure, being sick sucks, but this is so overblown to shut everything down. this virus has been in the states since december/january...millions didn't die then...we're going to be fine

While I really and truly need my fall football fix; I'm not gonna fault any university Board for putting caution above expediency. However, as we know California isn't always right.

Just looked into that. But, I have to think the Governor will pressure the other California public universities to fall in line.

Glad I live in Texas. I'm almost positive our Governor won't shut down our public universities in the fall. And, even if the other 49 states shut down, the Texas 12 could still play a 2020 season without ever leaving the state.

I mean I fully agree that we can’t just keep society shut down, but many professors are going to be in the higher risk demographic. The students may have a very small chance of dying, but university employees may not be quite as lucky.

Graduate assistants teach a lot of classes for professors. We should have plenty of treatments for COVID-19 by the time classes resume in the fall. It is time this country got back to work.

No. No it's not. It's not an illness like the flu.

It's a virus that not a single person a half a year ago had any immunity to, there is no vaccine, and treatments have been difficult to identify and universally effective. There is a reason why it's called novel.

It is absolutely nothing like the flu. So, not sure where you go to get info, but where ever it is you need a new source.

The problem with this type of analogy is that:
a) 80K have died having mostly shutdown most states (what do you think that number would be otherwise? Don't answer that actually. Spare me your genius).

b) College students - though they themselves aren't likely to die from it - they do two things. 1) They congregate in confined spaces probably at higher rate than any other age group and 2) they are extremely mobile which means colleges, universities, and similar campuses are probably one of the top ways to keep this thing going on steroids. In other words, in person classes are a good way to keep spreading to people who are at risk and who are susceptible to death from it.

Any entity that can move a preponderance of their activities online should do that until we have a vaccine. Otherwise, we're going to have to keep shutting down communities especially in the fall when weather forces people back in doors more. We can avoid shutting stuff down by strategically making wise choices. This is the first of many, many schools that will do the same.

As I have stated for two months now there will be no football this fall, which sucks. But that's where we are. I would rather see schools take such actions than businesses that require people.

We have vaccines for the flu, and they don't work half the time.

Question... What happens to our immune systems after months and months of isolation?

not that it matters, but i'll play.

a.i don't know that answer and neither do you. how many of those are in retirement homes? huh...old people with issues.

b.studies have shown that young/healthy will be just fine. sure there are outliers, but why force everyone to stay home and not work and survive. the beauty of life is if you don't want to go out/school, you don't have too. why force everyone to stay home when this virus really only negatively affects those that are older and have underlying conditions.

i have a student and 2 fellow teachers that have the covid and they have all said it's like the flu on a bad day. that's where i got that information. sure, just 3 people, but you asked.

you can stay home and be scared about the big bad virus that's gonna kill you, myself, my family, and my friends will all go out and support all the businesses that we can and hope that they all survive. people need to work and they need to eat.

edit: if we're so worried about people being out and about in close proximity, why is walmart/home depot/lowes/etc open during this time? those places are crawling with people, yet no big deal. a local bar wants to open or a salon and no way...that's some bull****

Does this effectively end Mtn West fall football? Will this force Mtn West to dump CSU schools and add UTEP and NM State or go to 10 schools?

Presuming that a) the California schools aren't allowed to field sports teams without an open campus, and b) no other states plan to close their schools, I think the MWC can make do with nine teams for one season. Everyone plays everyone and the OOC remains intact. But that presumes nothing else changes, which is an uncertain-at-best proposition. If they lost more schools for the fall, they might petition the NCAA to give them a waiver (or the NCAA could get ahead of it and issue a blanket waiver as conferences face the possibility of patchwork schedules)

Well, it's not bull****. It's real. You raise some fair questions but the premise of your argument is that if you're older it's ok if you die from this. Fatality rates go up with each decade of life. So, I don't know how old you are but if you are 45 then you're in a hell of lot more risk than that college student (especially if that college student still visits home from time to time). If you have any type of underlying health condition then your risk goes up even more. So, I want to be clear about this. These aren't just outliers. Depending on the state (as environmental conditions create wide ranges) in some places the rate of death for a 40 year old with an underlying can be unacceptably high.

The answer to your question to "A" probably gets us closer to how to be open without making things worse. There's such good rationale to reopening things up but telling those at higher risk to stay home.

I can't stay home, because I have to still go to work. But I do feel like I'm putting my kids at risk, because they both have asthma. A novel upper respiratory disease and asthma is not a chance I really want to take with their livelihoods, but I'm required. Not sure where you live or what businesses are or are not open but essentially your local leadership has deemed those essential. I'm pretty sure the bar and nail salon isn't essential. Where I live only those places that provide basic necessities like Walmart and grocery stores are open and masks are required. As are limits on the number of people that can enter. If places are crawling (guessing you are in Texas) likely explains why the Texas numbers are so high.

Good luck. We'll all get through this. That said, I'm ready for stuff to be open, but think it's smart for colleges to go online. Because they can. Not that big of a deal.

If you are scared for those teaching a class wouldnt it be better to find a way to just make them safer? You know like they do for workers in stores...a divider between students and professors that are at risk. Three walls and a 4th made of Plexiglas.

Or just keep them 10ft away from the students...how hard can that be?

About 50% of those deaths came from nursing/asst living homes. The effect on the healthy and young is no worse than the flu. Actually so far its not been as bad on the healthy and young as the flu. The flu killed 159 children this year and while I dont have the total for 21 and under...its a lot more than the Coronavirus

I would bet anything NY is lying out their ass on the numbers they listed
