You are correct.season in doubt. Our govenor said only two people in a boat. Family of 4 can not be on boat together even if they have a 25 foot pontoon boat.

+ 1 these guys are escaping Illinois

Where they going? Philly?

Heflin is the one loss that hurts. Brinkman and Perez are good but not irreplaceable. I think Heflin ends up in the B10, Brinkman maybe at Iowa State and Perez ???

Ok let me see if I understand this correctly...a family of 4 can live in the same house together and all that entails- ride to the lake in the same car together BUT when they get to the lake only 2 family members at a time allowed in the boat?? Makes as much sense as where I live being lumped into the Gov’s same region as Chicago.

Heflin leaving is really going to hurt. I would love to hear their reasons but I’m sure we’ll never know.

That’s because it’s not really about your health. People are starting to catch on.

Is this just the a sign of the times in today’s game or is this something specific to Hammock?

RE: Heflin Entering Transfer Portal (Brinkman & Perez as well potentially)
This exactly what the P5 wants to happen ... G5 finds them, trains & conditions them, moves them up as their talents allow ... P5 benefits. P5 teams just bring in fewer freshmen to make room, or "encourage" their grads and some others to "move on, kid, you ain't gonna get much playin' time here." Right now it's mostly grad students. Just wait until the transfer/no one-year-wait rule proposed by our loving neighbors, the Big10, gets approved. And all in the name of "fairness" to student-athletes (unlike the impending NIL, a lawsuit did not start this. The P5 did.)

The P5 doesn't mind paying out for the "payday games" -- they can afford it -- but an occasional upset is an embarrassment. Hurts their elite image.

But for these guys, wouldn't it be easier to be a stand-out at a G5 than lost in the crowd of a P5?

This late in the game for the 3 guys leaving makes me believe it has something to do with the coaches.

Absolutely. College basketball transfers skyrocketed. A lot easier to transfer when you don’t have to step on campus and face your coaches. A lot easier to transfer when you’re not around your teammates everyday.

Yep. And they contact players underground before they even transfer...even during a season.

RE: Heflin Entering Transfer Portal (Brinkman & Perez as well potentially)
This is just the times we are in right now with college football. Transferring is the "IN" thing right now. Not getting the playing time you think you deserve, transfer. Team has won enough during your tenure, transfer. NFL dreams at a "small school", transfer. It's only going to get worse. You have a story like Joe Burrows who goes from can't touch the field at Ohio State to being Heisman winner, National Champion and #1 Overall draft pick and now every kid that is the slightest bit unhappy or feels the slightest bit undervalued thinks "hey that can be me." People keep saying its the P5 fault and they are just poaching the G5 players... Look at the transfer portal. Kids are transferring left and right in P5 too. It's just the landscape of college football right now. Buckle up, it's going to get worse before it gets better.

UBER disappointing.. I’ll go a step further... I actually didn’t mind J Johnson transferring as he was a Texas Kid. Totally agree he hurt his draft stock by transferring but at least he played in his home state. Heflin is an Illinois kid. Max Crosby as an EMU alumn just had a great year with the Raiders. We’ve had a first round pick in English be drafted off an NIU D line. Just poor risk analysis in my mind. Hopefully he at least goes somewhere warm and the women are beautiful. Make it worth your while son! You just made it harder to get into the league.

People keep saying it's due to the P5 because it's true, just like the instant transfer/no one-year-wait rule for all student-athletes was proposed by the Big10. Fact.

Of course others are going to take advantage of it, for a whole bunch of individual reasons (coaches, facilities, friends, campus, family, weather, prospects, whatever). You can't get away with making a rule that exclusively benefits the P5. Then you start getting into anti-trust, etc etc etc.

Fans who don't realize this are the disillusioned ones ... the P5 runs football, and BB for that matter, for its own benefit. They toss some crumbs at the G5 (and probably FCS) because they have to keep it legal, and need those levels to fill in some blanks.

That's the landscape of college football.

Disillusioned, huh? Or maybe the people who think "oh poor G5 we're being picked on by a big P5 conspiracy," are just making excuses and playing victim. The transfer landscape is hurting and benefiting both groups equally. 3 out of the 4 playoff teams last year had a transfer as their starting QB. You think Georgia isn't hurt by Fields not being there this coming season? You think Alabama wouldn't have loved to have still had Hurts with Tua getting hurt? NIU is getting two years of starting QB play from a P5 transfer. Go back and look at last year, 7 QB's transferred from a G5 team to a P5 team. 3 of them had never even started a game for their G5 team so clearly not a case of P5 poaching top talent. A 4th who was a starter, and a very good one, left after getting beat out by a transfer who came in from a P5 team. So basically 3 QB's were poached from G5 last year. Then count the # that transferred from P5 down to G5 and it is many, many times more. Now in most cases those guys weren't big time players either, or maybe had off field issues, or needed a fresh start for whatever reason. Go through the rest of the positions in the transfer portal and you will see similar numbers at each. Not to mention that G5 teams do the same exact thing to FCS and vice versa. Kenny Golladay, anyone? None of this is new. It's just happening at a much higher rate nowadays because we live in an instant gratitude society. The NCAA and the P5 didn't create this. Society did.

RE: Heflin Entering Transfer Portal (Brinkman & Perez as well potentially)
I should not have used the word "disillusioned," since everyone who posts is entitled to their own opinion. But I'm not a "society did it" or "the devil made me do it" kind of guy. When something happens I care about, I want to know who started it and their reasons. And always follow the money.

The P5 is the driving force behind the changes taking place. Sometimes intentional. Sometimes reactionary. That's fact. The results are far broader. Also fact.

Opportunities/changes happen for reasons -- that's why I also mentioned the Big10's proposal -- and then more people take advantage of them for whatever their own reasons are. The push for NIL rights for student-athletes was started by a lawsuit and states' politicians who saw an opportunity to jump on an issue. That came about because of the huge revenues and big coaches' salaries in the P5, and student-athletes were not getting a share. The transfer portal was opened wider because of coaches moving up to bigger bucks and bigger-name programs at will. Student-athletes couldn't do that. Now they can.

Nor is the P5 responsible for all the G5's problems. I could have stated it better, but there is no blanket explanation. But it's a fact that when the P5 acts, in many cases, the G5, FCS, etc., have no choice but to follow suit and deal with the results. To be fair, Northern itself has made some pretty dumb decisions, athletically, and nobody pushed from outside.

My copy of "The Art of War," attributed to legendary Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu, is pretty worn out and may need to be replaced. It is used in academies all over the world, including ours, and reportedly is popular with successful CEOs, politicians and other so-called "leaders." I would highly recommend it as a good read for anyone.

Now, the old guy is tired, so am retiring from the topic. Have at it.

Heflin Entering Transfer Portal (Brinkman & Perez as well potentially)
I'm at a loss. Why wouldn't you want to finish your final year as a leader of the team you've been on for the past few years. Why wouldn't you want to have all the fanfare and hype from your alma mater at the end of your college career. When you've graduated and want to return to your college for games, reunions, etc., how do you want to be remembered. All three players were given every opportunity by NIU to excell, both under Carey and Hammock. This is very disappointing and I believe short sighted.

I bet they wind up in schools in the south that are more likely to play football
regardless of where the state is with the virus.
