Good for him. Assume he’s out on his own terms and not screwed over like Marla was.

He did some very good things for our program...but it was time for him to move on. He served with honor and, like so many of our other coaches, never did anything to discredit the program or the university. He will be well-remembered.

I'm excited to see some new blood in there, but I wish coach Shoop had gotten a chance to actually play out his final season.

I've worked with lots of 39+ year employees.

After about 30-35yrs, their productivity is gone bye-bye and they are there for paychecks and free Hilton/Avis points.

We better invest in facilities and help fund the program or not much is changing with a new coach. We also can’t have 50 people at a home game and reporting 400. Show up and support.

True. The total number of available scholarships is also a barrier to success. But, the same could be said for all of the other Olympic sports.

Goodman continuing with the “coach deserved better” trend after every coaching change. Just wish the man well and let’s move on.

We’re working on facilities. They need to work on scheduling games when parking isn’t going to be an absolute pain. Referring mainly to YMF.

I came away from that article wondering why Coach Shoop couldn't build "a cornerstone of national success in the city" at UAB. I understand some of the limitations and obstacles UAB baseball faces (mainly from what I've read here) but it would seem that he would have faced similar challenges at BSC.

Not a baseball guy so I've never really followed our program closely. Is Shoop leaving the program substantially better than when he was hired?

Where do things stand on the baseball/softball field house project? I imagine UAB has had to pause facility projects that weren't already under construction.

One of the big problems with baseball attendance was Shoop's insistence that many games be played at 4pm. who can go to a game then? It was apparently quite a struggle to get him to agree to 6:30pm starts and would not allow them to begin any later.

I couldn't find the program's overall record but Shoop finished with a record of 359-383 at UAB, only missed the CUSA tournament 4x in 13 seasons, and made a regional one time. He's was also well liked by his players. One of my coworkers played for him and would definitely take a bullet for Shoop.

All that said, UAB should be looked at as a sleeping giant. The baseball talent around here is ridiculous. The facilities & fan support are lacking, but improvements are clearly coming - and winning usually improves attendance.

I know next to nothing about how college baseball works, but would we be able to get the Samford coach?

I don't know if any of y'all saw this, but Perry Roth, a long-time assistant for Shoop at UAB, has been named our interim head coach through the 2020-21 season.

Only 4/13? That’s a third of the time pretty much. I certainly hope that’s not where the bar is set.
