RE: 2020 Football Schedule
Also, I think we may be getting close to the point that we have to consider ending the Miami series. That's a valuable non-conference spot that could potentially be filled with a P5 home-and-home. If we could play 3 P5-level teams per season with the 1 FCS game, I think that would look a lot better perception wise with the pollsters. I know it's not an easy task getting P5 home-and-home series though.

I'm not fundamentally opposed to ending the series, but you'll need to show me where we are consistently getting 2 P5 home and home games a year before I'd be willing to do it. As it is the Nippert/PBS/Yager setup is fine.

Yeah, I'm not sure where those games would come from. And I agree, it only makes sense to end the Miami series if we know for sure we can get those two series each year.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
So of the top 3 teams which 2 teams do they not play?

UC no Tulane no Navy
UCF no SMU no Navy
Mem no Tulsa no ECU

UCF easiest
UC as SMU record was better than Tulane
Memphis skipping non bowl teams

I've said for years if we can't get a P5 to replace Miami I'd rather switch to Ohio or Toledo. Other than a short road trip for our fans, we gain nothing by playing Miami U every year. Some day they will catch us again on a year where our team is down, theirs is up, or just a weird combination of various circumstances and it will bite us in the butt. The local media will be all over the story, trashing UC and praising Miami and what not. Would be disastrous.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
We could shoot for 2 P5 home-and-homes per season, and if need be, settle for Boise State, BYU, San Diego State, Appalachian State, Toledo, etc. We've got one coming up with Western Kentucky, who have been pretty good for the most part. But yeah, having Miami on the schedule every year really doesn't do much for me. Would much rather play them occasionally instead. The rivalry just doesn't have the same kind of pop as the Crosstown Shootout, and it's not really a rivalry anymore with Cincinnati dominating.

Bolded, yes, that is the risk and, odds are, that risk grows each year that UC continues to win. If or when UC does lose a game to Miami though, is it really any worse than a loss to any other MAC team? Yes, Toledo is consistently a better football team than the Redhawks, but any MAC loss would probably be a knockout for a New Year's six bowl regardless. So why not get the benefit of the neutral site PBS in the mix as well as a strong UC fan contingent for the less frequent trips to Oxford? It could be argued we have home field advantage every year. In Toledo, it's a tougher road game environment if that series is home and home.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
Yea...the downside of a loss to Miami is really overstated. Yea if we lose we probably aren't making a New Years 6 bowl that year (but we're not good enough to anyways at that point). It's not going to set the program back.

I don't mind the series the way it stands now. We go to Oxford once every 5 years. I could definitely see it in the future where every Miami home game in the series is played at PBS. That wouldn't bee horrible either.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
I don't mind Miami on the schedule, especially since there is no UCONN anymore and the collective strength of the AAC seems to be rising.. if it were keeping us from adding a P5 home and home, I'd consider dropping it but it really is the only semblance of a rivalry we have anymore, even if only in name and keg.

What I really wish for more than anything is if every year it was considered a Miami "home" game or at least a neutral site game at PBS the same weekend as Oktoberfest.

Once the current contract is done and we have the lead cancel unless 2 at Nippert and one at PBS or all at Nippert as it used to be.

Kelvin was different...Holgs needed a pillowy landing zone, Kelvin wanted to prove people wrong after all of the **** he had been getting based on the Indiana part of his career.

So it's ("always" except for when it isn't) would probably be a better way for the earlier poster to put it. Point being it isn't "always" at all, each situation is different. For example, I think Ohio U. is pretty happy they hired Solich for the 2005 season.

You know, I've already acknowledged "always" isn't absolute. But thank god for posters like you who are always ready to pick apart everyone's hot takes with a sufficient amount of smug arrogance.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
We've won 14 in a row against them. Why do we want to stop the series? We can't even lose to them when we try to give the game away LOL. I kid but I'd rather stop playing FCS goon squads before we stop playing the hawks. Let me qualify that by stating playing Miami in the current non-home-and-home format is a must.

I will say this year will be interesting since the game is played in Oxford with the hawks coming off an 8-6 season with a bowl appearance and a contract extension for the Chuckster. 14-1? Nah. 15-0.

For sure, but that's the model...a guy who had something to prove when he felt he was wronged. Solich won 9 games in his final season and ended ranked in the Top 10 in 3 of his 6 years, and in the Top 20 in two others at Nebraska. The fact that he gets canned, then Bill Callahan comes in a ***** down his leg for four years, he was a mad, mad dude at OU in those first few years...completely different from Tubs/Holgs who were mediocre and fled an axe. Hell, the man was two seasons removed from losing to arguably the best college football team of all time in the NC game when he was fired AFTER finishing the season in the Top 20.

Re-litigating the Nebraska-Solich debacle is pretty funny. Nebraska is kind of an also-ran now...would they have been if they kept a dude who ended the season in the Top 20 in 5/6 seasons at the helm and won 75% of his games? Probably not...

Complete sidepoint, but if you want a laugher, look at Eric Crouch's stats the year he won the Heisman. Dude wouldn't have even made a conference team with that line nowadays.

Texas did the same thing with Mack Brown, and it's looking like he may be turning UNC around. (Side note: Texas also did that with their basketball coach Rick Barnes) An impatient fan base can destroy a program.
