First time ever, right?

Probably correct but certainly since I was student at UC beginning with the Dave Currey era.

Kelvin was different...Holgs needed a pillowy landing zone, Kelvin wanted to prove people wrong after all of the **** he had been getting based on the Indiana part of his career.

The only other coach in UC history to stay beyond three seasons after a double digit win season was Gilman (he stayed for 6).

I think that distinction could go either way depending on how successful the coach is.

True. Everyone knew Houston was getting a great coach in Kelvin Sampson. I don't think the same can be said of Holgorsen. Holgorsen had 2 good seasons out of 8. Kelvin Sampson had about 15 consecutive good seasons before coaching Houston.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
Kelvin Sampson was struck down by NCAA infractions while coaching at Indiana. He was out of coaching for about 6 years before he got the Houston gig. So, I look at a guy like Kelvin who got a second chance to coach again instead of looking for an easier ride out. He's the reason the Houston program is back from the ashes - 139-60 [.698]. Overall, he's closing in on 600 wins and that's after missing 6 seasons. Unlike in football, the chances of advancing to a FF are far better than making the CFP if you're coaching a non-power conference team. I get the circumstances and fit at this time for Kelvin at Houston. Thus, I see Sampson vs. Holg as an apple and an orange comparison. I'm tellin' ya, I predict Holg will be Houston's version of TT.

I wonder if Sampson would take a leap to a bigger program if offered the opportunity.

Circumstances always change but I think right now the answer is a hefty no. 2 years ago he turned down the Orlando Magic head coaching gig. If you have a subscription to The Athletic, I strongly suggest reading this piece on him.. it made me gain a much stronger appreciation for him... "Don't mess with happy". In a way I think Fickell has a very similar mindset to him.

As long as Holgs is coaching Houston, I will not worry too much.

Holgs is a less capable "Dave Wannstedt." He can't beat good teams and chokes in the clutch. With both, you wonder how they get the recruits they do and later wonder how those teams with those guys on them didn't beat the world.

Holgs' ceiling is 8 wins... with at least half of those coming against the expected bottom feeders. His teams will lose AT LEAST two "WTF" games every season.

No worries as long as he's there.

I thought Houston fired coaches for winning only 8 games. 05-stirthepot

When Holgs was at WVU, he signed a contract with NO "buy out" clause. I believe he got something similar at UH. I don't think Houston has the cash to pay Holgs not to coach.

The man is a master at getting his cash.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
Let's compare the road game schedules for the top three favored to win the AAC...

Cincinnati
Miami, OH [8-6]
Nebraska [5-7]
Tulsa [4-8]
Southern Methodist [10-3]
Central Florida [10-3]
Temple [8-5]
The 2019 winning percentage of road opponents is 45-32 [.584].

Central Florida
Georgia Tech [3-9]
East Carolina [4-8]
Memphis [12-2]
Houston [4-8]
USF [4-8]
The 2019 winning percentage of road opponents is 27-35 [.435]

Memphis
Purdue [4-8]
UTSA [4-8]
Southern Methodist [10-3]
Cincinnati [11-3]
Navy [11-2]
Tulane [7-6]
The 2019 winning percentage of road opponents is 47-30 [.610].

It would appear that the scheduling gods favored UCF in 2020. Not only do they have the weakest road slate based on 2019 opponent wins but they only have five road games.

RE: 2020 Football Schedule
UCF seems to have a knack for scheduling P5 losers. Add Georgia Tech to that list. And they gave one of those wins away last season to a so-so Pitt team. I give them credit for smart scheduling.

How long since the Knights faced a regular season, non-conference game as tough as OSU?...or Michigan in the Big House for that matter? But I actually believe UCF has implemented the right approach for program building, short of playoff qualification.

UC regular season wins over UCLA, Purdue, NC State, and VT this past decade or so meant a lot to our fans and demonstrated UC's ability to compete against some big brands.

UNC could be solid this year. I know Stanford fell off a bit last season, but that was a really solid nonconference game when they set that up. Pitt is in the Purdue/NC State level (maybe above Purdue generally). They haven't scheduled the elite programs, mainly because their AD as taken the attitude that they aren't playing road games with no return game. I think that's a fairly smart philosophy, but I get why we do it our way as well.

I think Nebraska could compete in the Big 10 west this year so really looking forward to that one. I think people are unnecessarily critical of UCF. I appreciate how they've gone about their business.

They play Boise State twice over the next 4 years which is great for the conference assuming they win. That's also a home and home that I wouldn't mind UC scheduling. There's a sort of rivalry seeming to grow between Boise and the AAC.

With regards to UNC, most preseason top 25s have them squarely in and they should be competing in the ACC. I'm guessing that's one that was scheduled a few years ago and looks better and better as the game approaches.

We have a home-and-home scheduled with Boise State, but it's not until 2028/2029.

I kind of like the idea of taking winnable buy road games, like the one we have coming up against Arkansas. Take their money and send the fans home in a bad mood.

The other side to that is it forces you to play FCS teams because those are the teams we can buy for a home game. We're not playing 5 home 7 road.

That's a good point. I would rather not play FCS teams, but looking at our future schedules, it looks like that's pretty much the plan going forward. It seems like most FBS schools play an FCS game each year though. I'm sure it's a lot cheaper to buy an FCS home game than a MAC, Sun Belt, or C-USA team. I think it comes down to finances for us unfortunately. We probably can't afford to buy FBS home games, nor can we afford to not occasionally take road buy games.
