RE: Pick 1
I guess we’ll see how things go, didn’t Mario state that there is going to be football talk this coming week. I hope they’ll have a flan on bringing back FBS. If so that could shift things around quite a bit. It’ll also should establish good stability for the WAC. If the choose FCS, it could just dilute the conference even more.

It’s both. I have been saying it since September.... FCS schools to join - SFA, SHSU, ACU, And a few more from SLC. Adding D2 WT (Possibly Commerce but not sure)and UTRGV adding Football.

Move to FBS I don’t see happening, but that would be the only draw for SLC schools.

Without the draw of moving up to the FBS level, there is no reason for any top tier schools to leave the Big Sky, Southland, or MVC football conference. Otherwise they are in a more regional FCS conference than the WAC could ever provide. SO, if the ultimate goal is to become an FBS conference, the WAC commissioner might stir the ears on Montana, Montana State, Idaho, North Dakota State, Sam Houston State, and Stephan F. Austin. But if the goal is simply to field an FCS conference, the only schools that would be interested would be D2 school move ups and lower tier FCS schools currently in the Big Sky and Southland, with natural rivals in the WAC, more in common with the WAC, and have a greater interest in improving their basketball stature (not many if at all).

On a side note, I wonder if UC San Diego will continue to participate in the Pioneer league with COVID19 impacting travel and the league being so spread out throughout the country? The might be an opportunity to add them to a WAC FCS conference as a football-only member in the future. They have the money to support 63 football scholarships. I'm just not sure they would be willing to do so.

It all boils down to this: is the WAC bringing back FCS or FBS football. I started a thread to learn more about it, because it's incredibly ambiguous at this point.

If they start FCS, I think the WAC will look alot like the current Lone Star Conference, full of D-2 move-ups that are FCS ready.

If the goal is FBS, we'll get the SFA. Sam, WTAMU, and Big Sky scenario.

A key factor here I think is UTRGV. They announce they"re starting up football, it will set alot of things in motion. Maybe we even see UTSA rear its ugly head to offset the A&M presence in the WAC.
UTSA is not coming back to the WAC. They supposedly had offers to both MWC and CUSA and chose CUSA because it was in Texas media markets (DFW, Houston, El Paso).

As a CUSA member, the see themselves as better than the Sun Belt. They are trying to position themselves for AAC inclusion if future expansion happens.

The biggest stabilizing move would be 4 football playing schools from the Lone Star Conference.

Heck, take all 6 if they want to come up.

Getting NAU and S Utah to switch leagues wouldn’t be bad either.

I had mentioned NAU in the past but apparently NAU was a founding member of the Big Sky so it is unlikely they would leave that conference.

UC San Diego is non-fb transitioning to the Big West Conference (DI)

You know, with the limited info we have to go by, I have to say this is the most plausible solution. The more we talk and dream about all the possible FCS/FBS scenarios, logic brings me back to this one. Raiding the Lone Star Conference of its plentiful D2 bounty is the most logical business model to bring instant stability to the WAC, albeit FCS. It solves alot of near-term problems, and provides a solid foundation on which to build whatever it might be in the future (FBS). Selfishly, I really want Tarleton to blaze its own trail out West, and maybe bring along a bitter rival or two. But as they say, the ties that bind..

And I do like the Southern Utah lateral move idea, just up the road from Dixie.

Raiding a D2 conference is not what you do when you hold a FBS ticket. The conference is already washed up with these crap schools wanting to move up. Adding more just makes it worse. Raid the FCS schools that want to be FBS. Let these FCS conference’s backfill with WNMU if they want. No more D2 schools that have dreams of going FCS. I know you new TS fans are use to that D2 lone star stuff but you don’t make a legit D1 conference with those guys.

Dude I'm all for a FBS WAC and Tarleton shooting their shot. I keep having to talk myself out of it when I look deeper into the feasabilty. Your AD mentioned it will likely be regional in scope. Please provide an 8-team (minimum) hypothetical football conference that makes sense from a geographical/financial standpoint. I'm all ears...

Problem is no fcs schools want to move up. Schools like Montana and Ndsu like being big fish in a small pond. Texas D2 schools have the money and fanbase support to jump up to fbs

I honestly wouldn’t even know, especially the geographical part. Current FBS members would never make the jump. Current FCS members thinking of making the FBS jump aren’t really in the footprint. I guess if it was easy as us fans talk this situation would have been handled 10 years ago. But if we keep adding these D2 schools that have a dream we hurt out conference overall. If these D2 schools you guys talk about were so good they would have gotten sucked up by FCS conference’s already. The only reason you guys are here is because we need warm bodies as members have jumped ship.

You say "good", I say well-positioned. Tarleton and Dixie are more than just warm bodies, bud. Hate to break it to ya. In fact, NMSU may look around in a few years and find itself surrounded by these so-called warm bodies. Then who's the warm body at that point? NMSU have to decide if it wants to embrace its place in the world, play in the WAC and have a chance to *maybe* win some games, or live a life of perpetual homeless independence. As for other sports, LSC basketball teams can and will make some noise in this league. No doubt about it.

Warm bodies, that’s all you are. WAC losses members then they add members to keep afloat. It’s not like the wac approached you guys when we were fully staffed, big difference. What do you consider making noise in this league? Beating other crap teams? You guys don’t even know what a D1 athlete even looks like much like the rest of that conference you came from. Although GCU, CBU, Dixie State, Tarleton State, come from D2 origins, I think they will be the programs (other than NMSU) that will add bite to this conference. We have seen UTRGV, Chicago State, Seattle U, and Utah Valley spilling their wheels for the last five or more years. I think it is the D2 schools who have a chance to take a better path to build D1 programs. This can easily be exemplified with the fact that NMSU has struggle for many years in FBS football (building a losing tradition) while younger upstart former FCS schools have surpassed NMSU on the gridiron as competitive FBS schools. SO, although I think Tarleton State and Dixie State will have a rude awakening once they meet NMSU on the court for the first time, they hopefully have the right people in their administrations to not make the same miss steps (and under-achievements) as our WAC brethren coming from the defunct Great West conference. GCU, CBU are already draw more in attendance than UVU, Seattle, Chicago State, and UTRGV in basketball. I am convinced Dixie State will join GCU and CBU in greater attendance. And, I am hopeful with BCG Tarleton State will do so as well.

You guys landed a good coach, I’ll give you that. If it wasn’t for that you would have had it rough.

Just shows how little you know. D2 has far less stringent academic requirements than D1. It is loaded with D1 talent with iffy GPAs. Just look at D2 rankings in football, basketball, baseball, volleyball, you name it. Lone Star Conference is always at the top of the heap. The Texas LSC schools are not your average bear, but you'll find that out soon enough.

I’ll take your word for it that the D2 texas conference is some sort of national powerhouse loaded with grizzlies. You’re the perfect example that I hope we don’t keep adding Texas schools.

If the plan/goal FBS, that tells me the WAC has spoken to UMASS, Liberty and UCONN and they are interested. It also tells me the WAC had FBS discussions with Dixie and Tarleton regarding their membership.

More likely, the WAC is looking at FCS (which would not include NMSU) and has spoken to some other schools. I do not see how many of the schools listed in this thread could make the leap to FBS.

The fact that our AD is talking football gives me hope that the WAC is discussing FBS.

I like the enthusiasm but I think we will see growing pains. It's one thing to play a single game up (d2 vs FCS, fcs vs FBS, G5 vs P5), it will be a whole other beast to play a season.

UIL has just realigned and were the 2a school that just moved to 3a thinking we can crush whip the floor of every 4a schools. This FBS talk makes sound like we think we can beat can beat 6a Galena North Shore.

This guy gets it. I would like to see the WAC as a FBS and take Dixie and Tarleton along the transitional ride up to that level.
