The Big West conference is first to be in jeopardy for fall sports with 23 California schools anouncing online only classes...(Cal State Fullerton, etc)....so that puts non conference football games for some P5 schools that play these Cal schools to probably not be played

The 23-campus California State University system plans to all but cancel in-person classes in the fall and instead will offer instruction primarily online, Chancellor Timothy White announced Tuesday.

The vast majority of classes across the Cal State system will be taught online, White said, with some limited exceptions that allow for in-person activity. The decision comes as schools throughout the country grapple with how long to keep campuses closed amid the coronavirus crisis.

“Our university when open without restrictions and fully in person… is a place where over 500,000 people come together in close and vibrant proximity,” White said at a meeting of Cal State’s Board of Trustees. “That approach sadly just isn’t in the cards now.”

White’s announcement came the same day that infectious disease expert Dr. Anthony Fauci, a key member of the White House coronavirus task force, told a Senate panel it would be “a bridge too far” to think treatments or vaccines could be available in time to facilitate students’ reentry into schools this fall.

It also follows an earlier move by Cal State Fullerton, which in late April became one of the first universities in the nation to announce it was planning for remote instruction this fall.

We are going to look back on these times a decade from now and just ask ourselves "Why did we destroy all these institutions of higher learning and athletic conferences? Why did we destroy the fundamental values and infrastructure of our society that took so long to build?" This country has gone absolutely mad, just totally irrational

The country has not gone absolutely mad or irrational.
NIU will be losing millions next year in revenue and there will be needed drastic cuts. When they are projecting 20% loss in revenue maybe the administration should be more realistic and be cutting in the 20% range and not the 10% to 12% being talked about.

The P5 does not have to engineer a deliberate split away from the G5/rest of FBS football. This Covid-19 crisis will do the job, in combination with a wide-open, no-sit transfer portal, huge TV contract revenues, better N-I-L opportunities and a few other things going on. The P5 just has to sit back and let the impacts happen. Most of the G5 does not have the revenue, fan support, student fee money, state funding or local markets to weather it.

I can forsee a new FBS. Let's all it FBS-1 and FBS-2. FBS-1 will be the P5 unto itself, FBS-2 will be most of the AAC, most of the Mountain West, and a very few schools from the Sun Belt and C-USA. Only 1 from the MAC is possible: Buffalo. FBS-1/P5 will fill o-o-c football schedules with FBS-2 opponents. There will be enough to go around for scheduling, and all of them will be FBS-1 wannabes with at least some real potential.

Everything else in what is now called G5 will become FCS. That allows smaller number of scholarships, 14 instead of 16 sports, and everything except football still remains Division I. Division I does not require FBS football; in fact, it dosesn't require football at all. Also, the P5 cannot kick other schools out of the NCAA tournaments unless it wants to cut off the Big East, etc. The big separation will be with most of the G5 in football.

How's that for wild speculation? Let the screaming and hollering begin (if any).

That's kinda the old 1a, 1aa expanded with a new layer in the middle. Schools like NIU will become the 'tweeners, too much for FCS, not good enough for (or wanted by) the P5, still reaching for that FBS-2 or whatever someone wants to call it.

Imo, the AAC was working real hard to be the P6th, which may be stymied now, but there also was an emerging upper crust in the G5 elsewhere. Some schools there with real potential ... San Diego State (new stadium coming, big market, no pro competition), UNLV (hot market, new NFL team & stadium in town), Air Force (national name), Boise State (as usual), BYU. Then there are others in the southeast like UCF, USF, maybe App State. Any of them can out-muscle any school in the MAC (except maybe Buffalo/market, location, AAU) in resources.

Anyway it gets sliced, it's all about the money and the market. Which we haven't got.

Or "in this climate", we all lick our wounds, P5 and G5 alike, and things aren't that different at the end of the day...

Kill a smaller sport or two, reduce some salaries temporarily, remind the Governors they're not kings, and move back towards normal.

Not NIU related but Chicago St is having board of trustees meeting today at 2:00. One of the action items is 2021 sport sponsorship.

According to Kendal Rogers baseball is on the chopping block. They recently decided to not retain former NIU assistant and CSU head coach Steve Joslyn. One of the really good guys in the game and around the Chicago area.

As of right now NIU expects to have some students on campus. NIU will be transitioning a lot of classes (especially classes with over 50 people) over to online formats but also keeping smaller in person classes. Students will have the option of taking online only, in person, or mixed. NIU will also be waiving the requirement for freshmen to live on campus and for those that do chose to live on campus, every single student will get an individual room.

Hasn't officially been released yet but will most likely tonight to prospective students at the virtual open house.

Does NIU have any idea how many students they expect to have enrolled in the fall? If so, what are they predicting? Some students on campus is a wide number.
Scheduling class counts will be crazy in August when they have no clue how many students will be on campus.

Have any MAC schools reported plans to the contrary? Seemd like some form of football in the MAC is likely?
