If the hypothetical scenario where WTAMU, ACU and a few other LSC or SLC teams bolt for tbe WAC, there would be zero reason to leave.

I guess that leads to these questions- Are there any SLC schools looking to move up in football? How likely are any LSC schools going to move to D1? It would take 7 schools to form a 10 team football WAC. If you could get the three CA football school in the Big Sky to move up, the WAC would be the perfect conference!

All you need is 8: Tarleton, Dixie, nmsu, WTAMU, Angelo, ACU, N AZ, S UT. UTRGV starting football, UTPB, Commerce, MSU, opportunities are endless. I'd love to see Tarleton and the other LSC elite throw up a big middle finger to the SLC when the Louisiana and Arkansas schools crumble.

Maybe S Utah and N Az would want to play in this football WAC but why would they donwgrade conferences and still have pretty similar travel. Why would the NMSU drop down to FCS? They wont willingly.

Why would ACU move? The Southland is a much better situation for them for reasons already listed by others. Its not worth it for anyone in this current climate to give up a regional league with rivals that their students have heard of for one that covers the western half of the US. Maybe if it was football only. Definitely not for an all sports conference.

How many of those D2s desire to move up? Maybe WT.

In that case you have maybe Tarleton, Dixie, N Arizona, and South Utah.

You write like its a no brainer for these schools to move to the WAC when it doesnt really make sense for any of them.

All valid questions that have already been brought forth and discussed to an excrutiating degree. Check out the thread here:

Basically, we need to see what the WACs next addition is. A theory that holds water with me is S UT and N AZ come on boatd, all A&M schools (minus Prairie View) get parked in the WAC and UTRGV starts up football, UTPB makes the leap. If that happens, ACU is a geographical outlier in the SLC. A&M Chancellor wants system exposure that only the WAC can provide.

1. Does ACU even want to leave the SLC?
2. Does UTPB want to move up and could they afford it?
3. Is UTRGV still interested in football or have they decided to spend the money elsewhere? Coronavirus could also affect their decision. Add that with FCS or FBS and their study essentially saying FBS or don't start football is yet another angle.

Yes I admit I try to squeeze ACU in there. I woukd like to see ACU WT and Tarleton in the same conference, for life. I know alot at ACU feel the same way. UTPB afford it? Surely you're joking. If Kingsvilke comes out to the WAC, makes UTRGV rethink foitball.

1. Ok yeah, I would also like to see ACU and West Texas AM in the same conference as us.
2. Can't find anything on UTPBs athletic budget. I imagine it's probably middle of the pack for LSC teams.
3. True but they would still have FBS or FCS and the monetary investment. At least they'd have a guaranteed win.

If the SLC come a knocking, we will take it. But the SLC will not do it.

I know, they were rhetorical questions, hence me answering them myself.

Regarding ACU, you say they're an outlier which I guess technically they are, but how does leaving a conference where almost every team is in driving distance and joining a WAC that stretches from TX to Washington alleviate that? Being a SLC "outlier" still has them way closer than being in the WAC where everyone is an outlier and they can build rivalries easier in the SLC.

Well the SLC has and has had non football members but only because those schools didnt have football. I'd guess that they wouldnt let that happen because then hypothetically that could open the floodgates and leave some members in a tough spot.

I might be wrong so if anyone knows for sure let me know but I think the SLC doesn't allow affiliate members. Members must compete in the SLC for all conference sponsored sports.

They currently have A&M CC and UNO not playing football and have had UTSA, UTA, and Lamar in the past that didnt have football either.

Even if the SLC did have that rule, it wouldn't take much to change the rule! I mean there are many examples of conferences and even the NCAA changing the rules. Remember the NCAA required 12 teams for a conference to split into divisions? That changed a few years ago.

There is a difference between no football and sponsoring it and stashing it elsewhere.

The Southland told both ULM and UTSA to move on when they announced FBS football aspirations.

If ACU, or any other current SLC school, wanted to move football up to the WAC, could they work out a deal with the SLC where all their other sports remain in the SLC?

I might be wrong so if anyone knows for sure let me know but I think the SLC doesn't allow affiliate members. Members must compete in the SLC for all conference sponsored sports.

They currently have A&M CC and UNO not playing football and have had UTSA, UTA, and Lamar in the past that didnt have football either.
There is a difference between no football and sponsoring it and stashing it elsewhere.

The Southland told both ULM and UTSA to move on when they announced FBS football aspirations.

Different times, and things change. But, I think even during this time when conferences may want to get more regional, SLC is too big. 13 mouths to feed in a conference that only gets one bid to March, is too big. If they lose one school, I doubt they replace them.
