The prep highlights look good. But, what kind of HS competition was he facing?

If I could show you prep highlights of Marcus Hayes (Covington running back) they would look that good. Marcus was a finalist for Tennessee 3A Mr. Football as a sophomore, and added to his stats last year as a junior despite fighting injuries all year. Still, per last year's Covington team roster, he's listed at 5'7" and 156 lb. Unless he has a major growth spurt, he won't make a major college squad.

I do hope that Asa Martin is the real deal, since he's a Memphis Tiger. Our Spring roster shows him at 5'11" and 200 lb. I know that he has lots of credentials, and I'd like to see him do well.

I also expect that Kalyn Grandberry (JUCO player who prepped at Raleigh-Egypt) will be a factor for playing time at running back this coming season. I saw him play against Covington a couple of times when he was at RE. He looked strong then, and is listed as 6'0" and 205 lb now.

Let's hope that one of the backs on our squad will be able to help when Kenneth Gainwell needs a breather. He will need someone to spell him at times

Here's something he does which is uncommon: watch how patient he is before making that ungodly cut to the side. He waits until the very last microsecond and then leaves the defensive guy without a jock. Most players can't do that. He has Extremely agile feet.

Yes, the speed of the HS game is slower than the speed he plays at. However, if that patience translates to D1 ball, look out. Because he's also got the speed, strength, balance, and (I think) instinct necessary to make an impact.

Penn State was not a scheme problem...

That was a personnel issue. Only reason they didn't score everytime they had the ball is because their coach wanted to get cute and throw the ball.

I think we're on the same page. I'm saying that, having met the challenge of winning the AAC and getting to the NY6, the goals and expectations to improve are based on taking that next step--winning the NY6 bowl. I can see how it might have seemed like I was talking about a particular scheme. I was just pointing out that the coaches are likely to be applying what they learned from the Cotton Bowl and recruiting kids to add to the team with those learnings in mind.

Also need a running back when KG is put in the slot. The Tigers need at least 3 reliable running backs. 4 could get PT. Great point for recruiting.
