I wouldn’t expect much from that announcement. You’re the “guru”, why don’t you tell us what it is. The Great Southern Conference?

Likely one of two things. Either UT-RGV is starting up football, or they are moving to a new conference

This’ll be a replay of the major announcement Florida A&M was making a month back.

Seems Wichita State and UTRGV are announcing almost at the same time.

They're joining the Southland?

They're going to start paying travel subsidies to WAC teams that are closer to Hawai'i than they are to UTRGV?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The thought of it being a move to Southland is interesting. I mean, if thirteen’s not doing it for you, and fourteen is all the rage...

Football. I doubt that any group of schools is chomping at the bit to start traveling to far south Texas for road games.

Yes, remember a while back the FAMU athletic department posted that Big News was coming?

Turned out to be a Virtual pep rally.

I clicked on the tweet and still have no clue as to what "UTRGV" stands for.

University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

A merger 5-10 years ago of University of Texas Pan American in McAllen with University of Texas at Brownsville. They came up with some really bad name alternatives, some of them in Spanish, before settling on that one.

RE: Big News coming to UTRGV and May 11th
The Southland could really make a split:

Non-football conferences -

Southland: Sam Houston St, Stephen F. Austin St, Lamar, McNeese St, Nicholls St, Northwestern St, Southeastern Louisiana + Texas - Arlington, Arkansas - Little Rock

Gulf Coast: New Orleans, Houston Baptist, Texas A&M - Corpus Christi, Incarnate Word, Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas + Tarleton St, Texas - Rio Grande Valley

Bolded to play football under the Southland banner.

I remember one where it turned out to be a new service for their webstreams and another where it was a slight change to their logos. I've become VERY cynical when it comes to "big news" teases from athletic departments. It's almost always anything but.

I like the concept but I’d tweak it to be more geographically suited:

Gulf Coast: UCA, UALR, NW St, SE LA, McNeese St, Nichols St, UNO, Lamar

Southland: SF Austin, Sam Houston St, Hou Baptist, UIW, A&M CC, UTRGV, ACU, Tarleton St, UTA

If this about leaving the WAC, ugh, is that conference going to run into some bad timing with potential new D1 candidates, and the issue that remains Chicago State.
