Exclamation 2020 ACC at G5 road games
Still not a lot of "real" sports news to discuss, so I thought I'd throw this out there...

Based on FBSchedules.com "Power 5 programs playing games at Group of 5 schools in 2020":
Quote:If the 2020 college football season is played as scheduled, the 130 FBS teams will play a combined 1,560 regular-season games. Of these, a mere 18 will feature a Power 5 member visiting a non-Power venue. It amounts to a mere one percent of the total.

By conference, eight of the matchups feature an ACC program, seven include a Pac-12 member and three involve a Big 12 team. No Big Ten or SEC schools are slated to visit a non-Power foe this season...

Here are the 8 ACC away games...
FLORIDA STATE at BOISE STATE
N CAROLINA at UCF
NC STATE at TROY
PITT at MARSHALL
SYRACUSE at WESTERN MICHIGAN
VIRGINIA at OLD DOMINION
VIRGINIA TECH at MIDDLE TENNESSEE
WAKE FOREST at OLD DOMINION

To be fair, most of the ACC away games are either (a) in-state, (b) in an area the ACC team wants to recruit, or (b) at a well-respected G5 team which the ACC team will get credit for beating (if they win).

BOTTOM LINE: I still don't like the idea of a "no-win" game, but I understand why these were scheduled.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK? IS IT OK TO PLAY THESE GAMES OR IS IT A SERIOUS MISTAKE?

2020 ACC at G5 road games
Pitt is at Marshall because UCF backed out of a scheduled game leaving Pitt scrambling for a replacement. The only way to fill that slot was to agree to a home and home with Marshall. I respect my Alma Mater for honoring the game rather than buying it out.

If you are situated in the Atlantic, you get one game every six years in Georgia, one every three years in Virginia, one every six years in PA.

If Georgia and Penn State will not play home and away you aren't going to get a contract with them. That leaves you with situations with ODU. Ga State. Troy, South Alabama, Temple, Marshall, UCF, and USF thanks to the way the divisions are set up.

It's foolish to play these no-win games. The only reason GT kept the UCF games that Bobinski scheduled is Todd Stansbury's first job as AD was at UCF.

If we are being honest, do you really "lose" if you play a UCF or Boise? Nobody drops you in the ratings if you beat those schools and if you lose to them, well... you probably deserved to be dropped anyway. A Boise/UCF (and I can add about 3-4 others schools in there) game vs. an ACC opponent will likely be broadcast on national TV. Attendance should be decent.

I don't get what is so "yucky" about these hand full of schools.

There are about 5 or 6 G5 teams which are on par with mid-level P5 teams (besides the 2 you mentioned, probably Cincinnati, Memphis, Houston and BYU). However, some of these teams are clearly no-win scenarios.

Yes, you lose. How much credit did Pitt get for beating UCF? Almost none. How much grief would Pitt take if they lost?

Pitt got a lot of praise for beating UCF. I saw that last TD replayed a dozen times on ESPN and it was plastered all over social media. Pitt’s problem was the lost to BC that first week. Had they won that last game they would have been in a much more lucrative bowl.

In the case of Virginia, I hope that we don’t play at ODU again. ODU already upset VT...the game at ODU is not worth the risk.

It took some time, but it appears that Mendenhall is beginning to get traction with recruits from the Commonwealth.

The ACC has sufficiently differentiated itself from G5 schools. Mid-tier football programs like UVa could do 2 for 1 deals with in-state G5 schools.

Reasonable.

I think this is more Fuente flaming out than Mendenhall suddenly being the second coming. Also ... what traction? UVA is not doing good in recruiting on FB.

Some have, some have not. Wake Forest and Duke are structurally not cut out for football. Wake is serious about it, Duke isn't.

Cuse has had some H/H with midmajors as a fallout of when the Dome renovation was going to start and also wanting to save some $$.

RE: 2020 ACC at G5 road games
For most schools in the ACC, based on their scheduling practices, it appears to be more financially advantageous to play a home and home with a G5 school than to pay for a buy game. I have no problem with this generally, but prefer any straight up home and homes be with stronger G5 opponents like Army or members of the AAC or MWC.

Louisville will play @ UCF in 2022, and @ USF in 2024.

Those two are in a special category.

You do home n home's for they sit at or near the top of G5 food chain, with USF there is some history, both are great areas for recruiting, lots of retired or transplanted fans and finally great away trips.

Playing these two makes sense since Florida is such a recruiting hotbed. Pitt also has recently played UCF for the same reason.

These two 2020 games cited by Hokie, then, fall into a "special category":

FLORIDA STATE at BOISE STATE
N CAROLINA at UCF

Exactly. Those upper level schools in the G5 have the brand strength to not really harm you in scheduling. Heck, we are all die-hards and geeks on the message board-- the casual sports fan in most markets have no clue what conference UCF, Boise or Houston is. They just know they see them on TV. As a Cincinnati fan I have had many casual fans from different parts of the the country tell me they assumed UC was still in the Big East. Don't get me wrong, they realize we are not Alabama or Texas, but they had no idea we are considered a "lesser" program in the college football world than many of the schools in the ACC and some other P5 conferences.

RE: 2020 ACC at G5 road games
Is UCF/USF really still worth it just on the recruiting angle? GT just finished their H/H with USF and would have just finished the same with UCF if not for hurricanes ........ twice. The USF game was the definition of no win. They lost a bizarre game in Tampa that featured comically inept special teams and an ejection fest as anybody who lightly breathed on a helmet was tossed. USF won a sloppy ugly game where defense was optional. It heralded the second coming of the Charlie Strong era was the scale of this result. Last year USF came to Atlanta to play the second smallest roster in FBS suddenly asked to stop playing option and instead convert to a pro spread. The result was the worst GT team I've ever seen in my adult lifetime. And they still beat USF. Nobody cared. Nobody noticed. I don't recall seeing any recruits -- and Collins has gotten a lot of those -- saying they were coming because GT played USF. UCF is the same math played over again but against a team with enough talent to make a game of it. Mike Bobinski is the AD that made these scheduling choices. Ask yourself if that's the company you want to keep.

RE: 2020 ACC at G5 road games
FLORIDA STATE at BOISE STATE (win-lose, because of recent history, but they need to win)

*N CAROLINA at UCF (win-lose, because of recent history. Probably will be cancelled, never the twain shall meet)

NC STATE at TROY (lose-lose. Seriously, hhhwaaaat? Is Troy serving free pizza and beer at his place?)

PITT at MARSHALL (lose-lose. Good luck at WVU Jr.)

SYRACUSE at WESTERN MICHIGAN (lose-lose. I heard W. Michigan is nice that time of year?)

**VIRGINIA at OLD DOMINION (Has ODU replaced W&M or VMI? No significant history, lose-lose. Navy would be a good G5, but they have zero flexibility)

VIRGINIA TECH at MIDDLE TENNESSEE (At the Nashville Coliseum at least? lose-lose)

**WAKE FOREST at OLD DOMINION (App State would be cool instead. No significant history, lose-lose)

*I would much prefer UNC to play a G5 at a neutral site kick-off in Florida instead. Tennessee or Georgia in Orlando, for instance.

**One other thing to add, Norfolk has always been an ACC city with many teams playing in the Oyster Bowl, so I'm really not against playing at ODU, I'm neutral.

Boise State doesn't even recruit Idaho... why would FSU want to?

At least UCF is surrounded by great football recruits... but you won't sign them if you lose to UCF!
