Caleb McDaniel, a Rice University history professor, has won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for History for his book about Henrietta Wood, a woman who was enslaved twice and eventually sued her captor and won the largest financial settlement known in restitution for slavery.

In Sweet Taste of Liberty: A True Story of Slavery and Restitution in America, McDaniel, an associate professor and the incoming chair of the Department of History, traced the connections between slavery and the convict labor system the began after the Civil War. The work of black men and women was exploited through this system until the 1920s.

I wish I had more respect for the people who give out awards like the Pulitzer and the Nobel, so I could properly celebrate this accomplishment. But I just don't. So I'll say well done and leave it at that.

This is an excellent book, thoroughly recommended.

Not sure how not respecting the committee who awarded it is helpful to the discussion, so I'll leave it at that.

I'm rather surprised the Amazon page on this book hasn't been updated to mention the Pulitzer Prize? Or maybe I'm missing it?

ETA - actually the Kindle page mentions it but the print version page doesn't? Very odd.

There's an option on the page to submit corrections to Amazon. And one of the categories is "missing information". I filled it out, saying that the book had won the 2020 Pulitzer Prize for History, which surely was important to be included in the summary.

There's also a page of Pulitzer-winning books offered by Amazon that it's also not on.
