May not want people at the Westin or at the upper level of Uptown to watch a free game or folks on the highway to be distracted...

I didn’t think about the last part. In all seriousness, I wonder if there is a regulation on something that’s essentially going to be eye level with cars merging from Red Mtn Expressway as well as those on the interstate. Probably far enough away that it doesn’t matter unless we were putting up a 2nd, billboard-sized jumbotron.

Still have to have something there unless Clark is going to defer every half so we face the only scoreboard on the field (secret home field advantage inspired by a former Blazer HC)

I think with the way they built the "new Malfunction Bridges" the only spot you may would be able to see into the stadium is when you're taking the 20/59 exit to Tuscaloosa from Hwy 280 and even then I think the barriers are high enough to where you can't look over it.

I don't know if there is an NCAA mandate for scoreboards on each end. I think there would be. Many stadiums have a Jumbotron on one end and a small scoreboard on the other. Many times its the previous scoreboard from 20 years ago. Will be interesting to see how Protective Stadium handles that.

On a side note, I expect us to get some cool green and gold LED lighting with a brand new stadium.

If there is only one scoreboard I’m not going. There are just some things I cannot compromise on.

A few years back, Uptown showed football/basketball games on the jumbo screen on the rooftop. The UAB-Iowa State NCAA hoops game was shown on it. It was a really cool place to watch games. ALDOT made them quit since it was facing the interstate ramps.

And honestly it was a good move. Knowing Alabamians, they would have:

A. Pulled over to the side on the ramp to watch the game.
B. Slow down to watch causing a rear end accident.
C. Both A & B.

I'm curious what jurisdiction anyone thinks ALDOT has regarding things not on their property. If they can't get a guy on I-65 to take down his giant confederate flag, who thinks they can get someone to take down a scoreboard inside a stadium?

They regulate billboards. They regulate signage...both on the interstates and for private businesses within view. IF the top of the north end of the stadium is in view of the interstate and/or state highway, they can regulate it. Attalla can correct me since he's done this sort of work before, but I imagine the engineers had to clear the lighting at the stadium if it is within a certain distance of a public road. Especially a major highway, an interstate, and the junction between the two. If we wanted to put 2 huge spotlights on top of the stadium pointed at the road I have a feeling that idea would get quashed by ALDOT before or immediately after they went up.

They forced a change of some kind right after the digital billboard went up on I-65N at Oxmoor. No idea at this point what year that went up and what the issue was. Old age is unforgiving.

As for the confederate flag, I guess there's a difference between can regulate and how much effort they put into actually regulating it.

In regards to the stadium being finished on time for game 1.

Maybe when they are questioning that, they are referring to cosmetic stuff and not to whether or not the stadium would be functional?

Do I care if flowers are planted or a water fountain is running? With concession stands, we can find ways to get vendors in the stadium to provide food and beverage options temporarily if concessions aren’t ready.

Would be a shame if stadium isn’t functional for game 1 or 3, whichever week we add that 6th home game.

Was in Birmingham today (Saturday) so made it a point to drive around the stadium. It is going to be really nice, I was amazed. Lots and lots of construction workers out there today. Not sure if they were making up a rain day or if they work every weekend?

Yes they were. I drove by as well. Actually circled the site to get all angles. They've started the masonry work on the north side of the stadium too.

RE: Stadiums first big concrete pour is happening now
I built two pedestrian bridges over a state highway and had to change the color of the bridge because they were concerned with glare in the traffic. Right next to the highway I built $165 million lodge That lit up like a Christmas tree to the state highway and they didn’t say jack about the lights because it is not on the property or in the right of way and they admitted it When I asked. I can’t speak for downtown but suspect the stadium is too far away. It’s not on their property or right of way. That said they can have suggestions. I suspect they were consulted any way and whatever is built they will not have an issue with. This was most likely done probably two years ago in the preliminary stages of planning when most discussions like this take place.
Btw I had to meet with ALdOT two weeks ago and I am dealing with them now for anyone questioning on another project.

I really wish we had another stadium camera angle from the opposite side so we could see both

Like many fans, I am expecting the new stadium to have a multifunctional main scoreboard with LED lights that provide replays, acknowledge Blazer donors, groups that buy blocks of tickets for a company's special occasion, lead cheers, score updates, etc. We might expect some "wrap around " display like we see on vertical surfaces in other new venues.

I hope nobody else needs concrete in Birmingham because we are taking it all this morning.

Another pour started last night around 2AM and just finished at about 11AM on the Southwest portion of the 3nd level.

If the stadium does not have the video board in one end zone and the speakers on the other end I won't be able to recognize it as a UAB game.
