ETSU or NMSU
Is this another money grab for Jans or is he really out the door?

RE: ETSU or NMSU
He likes the food in Cruces and it is not that much on a prestige increase. I think it is only about a $100k overall pay increase. I think he is more likely to get noticed for a P5 job outta NMSU compared to ETSU. the SoCon is great but ETSU is one of four good teams. I know Jans will make them the top team if he goes there but he will be competing for P5 spots with the other top SoCon coaches instead of getting a good offer right off the bat by continuing to have NMSU dominate. Also I think he would want to go for that 7 figure salary too.

When Aggie fans start saying silly things like he loves the food in Las Cruces or he won't leave cause he loves the Organ Mountains I get nervous. That is ignorance talk at its best. I think there is a very good chance Jans is history. That being said, with or without Jans NMSU still wins the WAC and sweeps GCU next season!

If Jans leaves, players will want out of their NLI and it is far too late in the recruiting period to fill any open scholarships with a quality replacements. Especially since we would be in the middle of a coaching search at the end of spring recruiting period; and also being hindered be the national disruptions of the corona virus. Saying we will win the WAC without Jans (and all the immediate uncertainties) is just about as asinine a statement as saying Jans won't leave because of the love of food in LC or the view of the Organ Mountains.

It's the Mexican food in the Southern New Mexico. The Hatch Valley and the Mesilla Valley to the south where Las Cruces is located produce some of the best (if not the best) green chilé in the world. But Hatch Green Chile in the signature chilé. Also, Southern New Mexico has a lot of pecan orchards (one of the largest in the world) and is growing in the amount of vineyards and wineries.

The Ghost Pepper...

In 2000, India's Defence Research Laboratory (DRL) reported a Scoville rating of 855,000 SHUs,[9] and in 2004 a rating of 1,041,427 SHUs was made using HPLC analysis. For comparison, Tabasco red pepper sauce rates at 2,500–5,000, and pure capsaicin (the chemical responsible for the pungency of pepper plants) rates at 16,000,000 SHUs. In 2005, New Mexico State University's Chile Pepper Institute in Las Cruces, New Mexico, found Bhut jolokia grown from seed in southern New Mexico to have a Scoville rating of 1,001,304 SHUs by HPLC. Unlike most peppers, Bhut jolokia produces capsaicin in vesicles found in both the placenta around the seeds and throughout the fruit, rather than just the placenta

All the talk has been how good of a coach he is... it is getting noticed. I think he is playing your AD and boosters for more money... no way he makes a lateral move.

We've dominated the WAC with three different head coaches. Confident the next guy up will do just fine, especially with all the D2 move ups.

Ever been to California and run into a California Wine Snob?

They're nothing compared to a New Mexico Chile Snob. 237 types of chile pepper, all of them better than yours, and each type has to be grown in some particular ten acre field in some particular town with seeds passed down from some friar who discovered it in 1750.

The food there is good, they tend to use salsa verde where we'd use something red, and pork where we'd use beef. But after two weeks there I really miss Reynosa style tacos or even just some El Pato.

Given NMSU's dominance under Jans' leadership, he should be getting looks from bigger programs. Good for him. I hope he doesn't leave the Aggies but history tells us that even if he does, it's not cause for the rest of the conference to celebrate. Mario will make another great hire and the Aggie train keeps on rolling.

RE: ETSU or NMSU
I just don't see why Jans would make a lateral move for a small raise. ETSU has only been good recently. They don't have the history of NMSU. And ETSU folks keep referencing RPI conference rankings for 2020. We all know the WAC took a HUGE step backwards this year. But look at the prior 3-4 years. The conferences were very similar. Heck, the WAC was rated higher than the SoCon in 2018. It's a lateral move at best.

Nah, I'm from Texas, frequent NM, and live in Arizona. Tex-Mex is its own thing entirely.

RE: ETSU or NMSU
I think the fact that Jans is getting looked at is credit to him and the school. I do not want him to leave, but if he thinks that long-term ETSU is better situated, I can understand that.

I also feel like I need to share this story here.
I grew up in Western NY, and went to NMSU sight unseen. I was taken out to dinner at a restaurant that was right across from campus called The Hacienda (I know, that is a dumb name). My experience with Mexican food was Tacos. I had no idea what to order, so a friend suggested Navajo Taco's. Which are great!

I was then asked, the question "Red or Green?" My answer was "Red or Green what?" They all looked at me like I was crazy and said "Chili!" In my mind, chili had kidney beans, hamburger meat, etc. Who in the world would want green of that? That would be full of mold. So, I replied "Red."

The staff brought out the food, and they put the Navajo Taco in front of me, then a bowl that looked like tomato paste. I moved that to the side and then ate the Navajo taco, it was amazing. When I finished, I then took the bowl and put it front of me. I took the spoon, stirred it up a little bit, and wondered where the beans, etc were. I figured that maybe NM chili is a little different. So I got a big spoon and put it in my mouth. I should have noticed that conversation had stopped at the table, everyone was watching me. They were all thinking that I had an idea about what I was about to do, nope.

This was me:
[Image: chili-mouth-fire-flames-coming-out-its-51118643.jpg]

The staff was at my chair in about 5 min with bread and milk, they too saw what was about to happen and were prepared. Needless to say, I learned my lesson. By the way, the answer is Green.
