Based on this I think they fully intend on sports. Now how one defines essential vs nonessential depends on who you ask and if you’re the one getting cut. I think we’ve proven how important it is at both the Birmingham and Tuscaloosa campuses based on enrollment growth

Fess has a pretty big issue here. He cannot cut UAB without cutting comparably UA.
UAB is the one making the most money (and thereby losing the most out of this).

How much the state's ETF will be affected by business shut downs, lay offs, job furloughs and staff reductions will be determined between now and Oct.1st, the beginning of the 2020-2021 fiscal year. Nearly all university sport program costs are covered by "charitable contributions", not SETF. The SETF is mainly supported by two taxes - the 4% state sales tax and the 5% state income tax. Both of these are heavily impacted by economic distress (like recessions) and tax credits, tax abatements and tax exemptions granted to big businesses and wealthy individuals by the state legislature. Because hundreds of millions have been diverted from the SETF by special interest serving state laws, the SETF is only today (2019-2020) back in the range it was in 2007-2008. This new recession caused by COVID-19 has not yet been measured in full. The state Revenue Department will give an annual report after Oct 1st 2020.

That’s a lot of math for a guy that couldn’t figure out how old the class of 2028 & 2029 is now
