NCAA Denies Sports Reduction For DI
The NCAA Division I Council denied a request to temporarily waive the minimum number of sports required to be a Division I member and delayed a decision on allowing all college athletes to be immediately eligible one time after transferring.

Yikes...that's problematic for some schools being able to stay in FBS now. Either that, or they're showing clearly that they don't care at all about the financial stability of their institutions. This may actually force some schools to realistically consider a move to FCS as that would allow their departments to drop down to 14 sports from the 16 limit for FBS.

The NCAA said they will determine it on a case-by-case basis, not a blanket decision for every school.

Akron just announced that they will be permanently cutting their Athletics budget by 20% or $7,500,000 for FY 21 (starting in July of this year).

This is old news, but I read that Cincinnati had dropped men's soccer.

It's "culling the herd". Making for a super Division of Blue Bloods to hoard all the TV revenue as the schools will lose money once players can be compensated for there NLI.

BGSU rumored to be cutting 10% to athletics and Kent State just announced a 20% cut as well.

I have no idea why the MAC schools are not sitting down right now and trying to figured out a move to FCS. Would allow for the trimming down to 13 sports, a cut in scholarships down to 63 for football from 85, and would allow them to get to a point where spending millions of dollars on football staff for programs who have next to no chance at playing for more than a football game in Montgomery, AL every year. It would actually allow for them to play for something bigger, even if a NC in the FCS division wouldn't mean as much as one in FBS, they'd at least have a chance at it, and it would be far more memorable that a friggin Camelia Bowl or Boca Raton Bowl victory.

I would rather have all the G5 schools drop down to a sub level between FBS and FCS... Limit football to 70 and mens/women’s basketball to 12 scholarships... Also drop the mandate for 16 to 10-12 varsity level sports required...
At this level the Toledo’s, Marshall’s and Fresno State’s of the world could compete for a true national championship in their division...
Let the power fives beat up on each other on a 12 game slate with no so-called warmup/cupcake games to help prop up their ridiculous budgets... :cheers

While I agree that that's the best and scenario, I just dimt believe there is enough support from the most valuable properties in that group (AAC and MWC) to drop down at this point, and that's JUST for football. No chance that schools like Cincinnati, Memphis, Wichita State, etc. would ever move out of high level basketball.

Just to put things into perspective, BGSU, Akron, KSU, and presumably every other Ohio MAC school when the budget dust settles will have athletics budgets in the $20M-$25M range...that's less than Ohio State spend just on their football coaches. It makes no sense for schools like those in the MAC, Sun Belt, CUSA, etc. to compete at this level and continue throwing money down an endless pit...now more than ever considering the red numbers being thrown around in their University finance offices.
