Basketball now an eastern sport
Maybe it always has been.

The geographical center of the 48 states is supposed to be Kansas. Other than a place called UCLA, only these teams have won the NCAA who were from Kansas or west.

2008 Kansas
1997 Arizona
1990 UNLV
1988 Kansas
1966 UTEP
1959 Cal
1956 USF
1955 USF
1944 Utah
1943 Wyoming
1942 Stanford
1941 Wisconsin
1939 Oregon

So, since I was old enough to vote, only UCLA, Kansas, UNLV and Arizona have won the NCAA who were from the centerpoint of the nation or west. Basically in the last half century, western basketball has just disappeared.

I don’t think that western basketball has disappeared, but when you think about the number of teams East of Kansas vs the number West of Kansas, what you point out is not surprising. I don’t know the precise numbers, but I would guess that there are at least four times as many teams in the East than in the a West. And add to that the premier western league, the Pac12, having had a lot of down years recently.

There are really good teams and leagues in the west, just not nearly as many.
