2020-2021 Men's basketball roster.
Who are your starters beginning the 2020-2021 season? Biggest surprise?

Phillips/Carr
Gadsden/Estime
Okauru/Tolefree
Boggs/Harvey
Steere/Dodd/Bowen

It's interesting to look back at the three years Keatts was here and the different ways we managed to win. May be a preview of what to expect from Siddle

Y1 67.8 ppg(7) D 65.6 ppg(4) 3pt% .306(9), 3 def .296(1) TO Mg +4.11(1)
Y2 78.4ppg(3) D 71.4ppg(6) 3pt% .360(2) 3 def .338 (2) TO Mg +2.56 (1)
Y3 82.3 ppg(1) D 73.4 ppg(6) 3pt% .364(4), 3 def .338(3) TO Mg +3.89(1)

Valuing the ball is key in the Keatts/Siddle system.

TO's by year
1 UNCW 395 OPP 445
2 UNCW 374 OPP 495
3 UNCW 363 OPP 506

Keatts wanted to score a lot, defend the 3 ball and win the TO margin battle. We were #1 in TO margin in the CAA from day 1 and top three in 3 pt. defense every year. Offense increased by about 14 ppg by thid year, while defense allowed only 8 ppg more. A 3 pt% for the team getting over 36% the past two years was pretty impressive.

My biggest surprise will be Boggs. He was coming on strong to end the year and looking really confident from 3. I picture him as a Flemmings like player who can pull you out and drain the three or if you guard to close, take you to the hole and score. And at 6'7" he will be a beast on the press. Best overall offensive potential on the roster IMO.

Estime may come in and surprise me too. He will be one of our older players and has a nice arsenal on offense. I also have a feeling Steere will get a waiver. If not, and we don't add another big, I have Dodd starting with Bowen backing up at center.

I can't argue with how you have it laid out provided Steere is eligible, however i'd like to add one more to that last line, even with him. Harvey is a 3 to me in this system

It doesn’t make sense at this point to even speculate that Steere would be ahead of either Dodd or Bowen since there’s zero indication so far he’ll be eligible to play this year (outside of a lot of hope and prayers on this message board).

I agree. There seems to be hope that the NCAA will grant a one-time waiver allowing athletes to transfer without sitting next year and a general push to allow athletes to move freely moving forward. Even if that is possible, or even likely, it will be interesting to see there are limitations. I don't have confidence that Steere will be granted approval given that he's already transferred once, but I don't know his circumstances.

To be honest, if we don't land another big via transfer or JUCO this year, while not ideal, it's not a flag for me. It seems like some of you want to hold Siddle accountable for the shortcomings of the previous staff. Signing big men, especially out of HS, has been a huge issue for 3 years. We're incredibly thin in the post, but that's not Siddle's failure. If we're having the same conversation in October 2021, I'll be concerned, but he deserves time.

While i understand, you also don't toss away a year. We know darn well this roster, plus who he's added can compete and compete with the top of the league. But, not without a big man or 2. If half the team left, he's be way behind the 8 ball, but he's not. I love building to the future but to toss away this year to do so is silly. Just sign a damn big already so we can stop discussing :)

I'm confident that he's trying. If it doesn't happen, I don't think it will be throwing away the season, but he doesn't need to sign someone tall just to meet a quota and fill out a roster spot.

If all you want is a big man, I'm sure we have a 6'10" - 6'11" student he can suit up.

C’mon Sims is a starter or first off the bench. To leave him off completely is asinine. He had a sophomore slump. He will do great under Siddle.

RE: 2020-2021 Men's basketball roster.
Just admit you omitted Sims entirely '82. It's okay. People make mistakes,we all do. To double down is foolish so please stop it. And, forget about your ego for a minute. It's about OUR TEAM-the TEAM that you live and die for and I like that about you very much. Great passion! Love it!! So when you leave out the leading scorer entirely, it's hurtful to Jaylen and wrong. Just please admit that you left him out and it's cool.

Sims is very good. He can guard multiple positions for one and that is HUGE going forward. A very nice wingspan and is a willing and good defender plus can board. He can drive the ball and shoot the ball from deep as well at a solid clip at 35 percent. Second leading rebounder on the team. Led team in scoring. Forth on the team in steals. He basically had a 1:1 assist/TO ratio as a wing which is fine. Played the most minutes for a reason and is very versatile.

Moreover, Sims is smart and athletic-can play point forward in a pinch. He was thrust into the go to guy role this year due to the situation, maybe too early, as most felt that he would carry UNCW in year 3 and 4. Has a ton of rotation on his ball but needs to put a bit more air under it to get north of 38% from 3/75% from FT line (needs to get mental routine down cold and stick with it-release good enough already for 75 plus). What you don't want to change is his willingness to be a team guy and kill himself out there on defense and boarding plus being a class act along the way. He will start or play big minutes this year and should. About 300 or so teams would love his services at the wing-glad he's starting for us.

2020-2021 Men's basketball roster.
With the current team, I think Sims has a chance to start over Okauru... but only a very slim one. I always thought McGrath had Sims take too many shots, which is why he led the team in scoring. Once Burke took over, Sims inefficiency was glaring and he moved him into a rebounding and defense centric role. Once his shot attempts were reduced and we moved the ball more (under Burke), we were playing much better as a team. Sims has a role on this team, but it shouldn’t be as a starter IMO, and it should be as a key rebounder and defender. He has the capability to really thrive under Siddle with the press due to his wingspan, and would also be a guy I could see benefiting from a lot of fast breaks off turnovers. The reason I think he’s behind Okauru on the depth chart though is Okauru has better energy and is more efficient on offense.

In a way, Siddle is now in the same position that McGrath was - one scholarship left, and in need of a big man.

My position with McGrath was he needed to sign the best available grad transfer big because the likelihood was that there would come a time when we needed a big body due to injuries if nothing else. That turned out to happen.

Unless Siddle knows that Steere is going to be available right away, he too needs the best available immediately eligible big he can sign.

What in the world are you talking about? Ego? Bill, you're way too full of yourself. I didn't make a mistake. This isn't about ego. I put out the roster I think Siddle will play based on his sytem and what I saw from Keatts.

You were the BIGGEST Talley fan. I told you way back when that Ingram would end up starting in front of Talley because he was a better scorer and you attacked me the same way you are now about Sims. Guess what? Ingram started ahead of Talley. BTW, i'm watching the CAA championship game against CofC and Talley had one of his best games. I have nothing against any player and he was really good. Just talking basketball pal.

Get over yourself. You aren't some basketball God. Just put out the roster YOU think will play instead of attacking me.

If half the team left, he's be way behind the 8 ball, but he's not. I love building to the future but to toss away this year to do so is silly. Just sign a damn big already so we can stop discussing :)

Agree. And could come back to bite him if he doesn't.

I liked Denzel too and they played together some. It wasn’t one guy over another to me in that case.

We and most here feel that Sims is a very good player and the numbers and eye test show it.

It’s a bit early but when I get a minute I’ll put one out.
